Anyone else shed a tear when the article compared the cost of the Viper to the cost of an X-wing. Poor X-wing... At least the game is named after you.
Legal Ambitions-StarViper Preview
Xizor is not Wedge.
The point of Biggs is not to force shots at him - it's to force shots away from a higher-value target. Xizor will be a tough ship to kill, certainly, but what's the point of that? What can you do with him that you couldn't already do with Guri alone? Maybe you tweak some of the upgrades, but he's certainly not going to be all the way to a Wedge-level target.
No release date in the preview.
Only the promise of a Scyk article
When is it coming out anyone ???

I think Guri is actually more dangerous than Xizor, if neither is upgraded.
The key to Xizor's ability is that he changes the enemy's target priority, shifting it away from him. To make the ability work for you, you need to give Xizor some killy upgrades; make him a threat that the enemy should not be ignoring. That way they can either waste shots on him, or let him kill them as they clean out his pals first.

Guri with Bodyguard also boosts his wingman's defense when Guri is not a legal target for the attacker..
Xizor with Virago, FCS, Outmaneuver, and Autothrusters looks like a Falcon slaying machine, Guri w/Bodyguard helps protect that investment.

Since Bodyguard has to be at R1, the cases where you can target Xizor but not Guri are going to be few and far between. We also have very different ideas of what it takes to kill a Falcon.

Pretty much this. Guri's ability makes her a better fighter than Xizor is. Xizor's utility comes in being able to spread the damage around, but if he doesn't present any greater threat than the ships around him, there's no reason to target him.
You're not going to want to pair Xizor with a 30-40 point ship that's a bigger threat than he is - that's no Biggs/Wedge, that's Rookie/Wedge. You're going to want to pair him with a number of cheap support fighters like Z-95s that your opponent wouldn't want to shoot at in the first place.

Bodyguarding Xizor makes no sense! If Xizor is range 1 to another ship that is less expensive, no one will shot Xizor!

Exactly. Like I said, Bodyguard Guri paired with Xizor is pointless.

Exactly. Unless you pump Xizor with upgrades he's not as powerful as someone like wedge, and although he does have a highly manoeuvrable ship, its less manoeuvrable than an Interceptor, and he doesn't have as high PS as someone like Soontir or Jax. Also his ability in a 1-on-1 is useless.

At close ranges you end up with a lot of situations that would only have one ship in your arc even though there are two enemy ships within range one of each other.
You don't put Bodyguard on Guri. You put it on the generic EPT Scyk that was mentioned at GenCon, who buffs the defense of Sirissu, who lets the Bodyguard or anyone else in Range 1 reroll one defense die.

Most of the suggested builds in these preview articles are terrible.

Pretty sure they are urged to fill every upgrade on the ships in the suggested builds.
Xizor just sounds like he'll be fun to buff up to the max with upgrades.

They also seem to make the builds "fluffy".

Fluffy is fun.
Might not be competitive, but this game is oozing with theme and the more you can bring into a casual game the more fun it usually is.
That's how I feel anyway.
I think the point of xizor's ability is for you to load him to the gills. You want to force your opponent to choose between targeting him or his support. You need to make him a big enough threat for them to want to target him early. You need him to be a late game monster. I am not sure how I would go about doing that just yet but I am pretty sure that is the idea behind the ability.
I'm really digging the StarViper - not as a ship I'd buy and fly but as nice ship to fly against...
Autothrusters were much needed, and that they managed to create a defensive upgrade which doesn't break the Phantom or 2x2 base ships is very much appricated. To have the Interceptor back on the map might just get me back in tournamnet mood.
Now hopefully the M3-A preview won't be far behind, so we can get a good look on the new cannons (which I hope will give some additional rolls to fill for Defenders).

Which is awesome. I'm happy things are shifting back towards lots of upgrades and a few ships rather than a lot of ships and few upgrades.

To be fair I think you will be running 1 ship with a bunch of upgrades and a mini swarm of naked or nearly naked ships

I'm afraid that until FFG re-evaluates some of their design decisions, and release ad-hoc upgrades for Defenders (most likely with the imperial huge), the only thing they will fill is unused cargo containers.

If they release a cannon that deals damage cards instead of stripping shields that would be a big boost to Defenders.

The Flechette Cannon appears to be a stress dealing version of Ion Cannon. The other one is a complete mystery, however. Mangler Cannon? Mando Cannon? Mango Cannon?
