How many pegs?

By ThatJakeGuy, in X-Wing

Normally two pegs as out the box.

Some things look better on one peg. Support ships like my HWK i put of three so it looks like they are standing off and doing 'comand and control' a little more

It might have been interesting to have an advance rule to allow number of pegs to show an abstract measure of 'height' in relation to other ships but it would be a pig to keep changing pegs and isnt *that* relevant in open space. In a ground attack varient telescopic bases for height would be excellent

(we did this at a fighter combat demo game at games day with GW once called 'air waagh' all the ork and imperial fighers were on heavy lead bases and mounted on car antennas/ariels so you could make them 6, 12 or 18" above ground)

Where pegs are in fact used as altitude indicators is in Wings of Glory (former Wings of War) WWII version. You have to play a climb maneuver for a few turns and gain altitude counters and every few counters you gain an altitude level and adf a peg under your Spitfires and Focke-Wulffs. Of course you can also dive back down which happens a lot faster!

In fact it's a nice idea, but in space combat as opposed to atmospheric combat it hardly makes any sense!

Yeah i remember aeronautica. It was pretty expensive IIRC

Pre aeronautica i wrote a set of rules for GW events based loosely on the 'bombers over sulpha river' game but a lot more detail.

One of the scenarios was a 'death star' style trench run with eldar raiders vs an imperial battle station, the other a 'dam busters' scenario with loyal imperials vs a traitor force with lots of ground combat units.

I used epic scale fighters and bombers and (obviously) epic flak defences.

quite popular at open days.

I seem to recall the dam busters scenario had 'height' as a mechanic but i think it was just a flip over token for 'attack level' or 'air combat'

It worked quite well and was played a lot at warhammer world events.

Just two. That's how it is on the box so I'm like, "Oh okay there's the proper way, got it."

I have been tempted to vary it up here and there though. To make some units maybe seem more important. Play with the opponent's head a bit.

Like the mighty zebra, I fly my TIE swarms on two pegs as to confuse the enemy of my numbers.

I fly my green A wing on zero pegs, it's my low rider! Otherwise, I try to mix it up between 1 and 2. If I'm running 2 X wings or something, I try to make one higher than the other to make it easier to identify which is which. Though all of my ships are repainted, and it's easy enough as it is anyways.

One per point of pilot skill, right?

No extra weight added to the base:

I've seen some people at my store using the huge ship "peg" with falcons and shuttles to get them up higher (and more stable) since they are the ones always bumping into things. Works pretty well.

I like having my higher skilled pilots on higher pegs sometimes, but I mainly cruise with 1 peg per ship (except for B-wings).

Wow. I definitely thought this thread was about something else. My bad.

I like to mix it up. Seem more realistic at different altitudes.

Anyone else fly ships occasionally with no pegs at all?

I will occasionally fly them without pegs, and its usually when I take my ship on trench runs against my wife, the furniture, or the evil stuffed animal
