Novels

By RebelDave, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Not strictly Edge, but still Star Wars.

What period novels would you recommend?

Specifically ones set between Ep3 and 4, or the OT.

I have read the Bounty Hunter Wars, which I enjoyed, and the Hand Solo Trilogy which I enjoyed ALOT.

But what about the Lando Calrissian Adventures? or the Han Solo Adventures? are they worth it?

RD

I enjoyed Allegiance.

The Han Solo Adventures were a lot of fun but the Lando Calrissian Adventures were a disaster of epic proportions.

I thought the Galaxies novel was ok and both Shadows of the Empire and Scoundrels were great. If you like Allegiance there's the sequel Choices of One. I loved Death Star, and am still sad that there will never be a follow up novel showing us what became of the characters that survived. Razor's Edge was a lot of fun as well but I haven't read ay of the novels that are still hardcover only.

The Coruscant Nights Trilogy was pretty good. (Actually, they're some of my favorite novels set before Episode IV, period.) If you're into zombie stuff, "Death Troopers" was OK, but not spectacular. If you like Dash Rendar, Shadow Games comes recommended.

I would like to second HappyDaze's recommendation of Allegiance. The Han Solo Adventures were better than The Adventures of Lando Calrissian, but neither really impressed me.

I wouldn't call the Lando Calrissian novels disasters. They are different, however, feeling more like Star Trek in terms of encountering strange new life forms. Chalk it up to there only having been four other EU novels at the time, and so the franchise didn't necessarily have a sense of direction.

I strongly recommend Brian Daley's Han Solo novels for how they capture the feel of Star Wars's fringe.

Not novels but rather anthologies, I always enjoyed the collections Tales from the Mos Eisley Cantina, Tales from Jabba's Palace, and Tales of the Bounty Hunters. Of course, having multiple stories in each book, the quality varies; some really good and some not at all.

The Lando Calrissian Adventures hold 3 slots in my top 5 least favorite EU novels list. I even re-read them after the new Legends collection got released because I had last read them when I was seven years old and I was wondering if maybe my memory was being unfair to them. While I didn't hate them quite as much as I remembered they still weren't good IMO. It felt more like a hybrid of Firefly, Star Trek, and Indiana Jones then a Star Wars story, and while I love all of the series I mentioned to me something about them just didn't mix right in the Lando adventures.

After the second Han Solo Trilogy was released I had hoped for more and better Lando books but no such luck.

I agree with Death Troopers being ok, though I'm not a big fan of zombie stuff. I can't believe I forgot Shadow Games. It was really good though Scoundrels was better IMO.

I'm listening to my first non-movie adapted Star Wars novel. I picked Tarkin. I've only just started it but I have enjoyed it so far. I just wanted a novel told from a really different point of view than what I figured I'd get out of a Scoundrels or Kenobi but those are on my list,

I think I'm going to try Darth Plagueis next, though. I want to "hear the tragedy of Darth Plagueis The Wise."

Not novels, but if you haven't listened to the NPR radio dramas, do yourself a favor and do so. The scripts are also available to read if you prefer that medium. More Brian Daley at his best.

Darth Plagueis makes for an amazing audiobook, and if you like Tarkin, you'll absolutely love it. Kenobi and Scoundrels are both good as well, though I think I preferred Kenobi to Scoundrels.
