Wave 7?

By Osoroshii, in X-Wing

To add to my comment on Wave 5....if I wanted a game that put waves out every other month without the time to properly playtest the materials contained within, I'd be playing Star Trek Attack Wing. I actually do not mind FFG taking their time between waves as it gives them the time to catch and correct any errors they might find and make sure the product is the best they can release.

I can agree with that, but in reference to my rant, they shouldn't selectively release it then have such a long lead time for the actual release. I like the time they give, but their methods could definitely use some tweaking.

Look, they have said that once it gets to shipping across the ocean, it is kind of out of their hands. They did not intend for Wave 5 to be so late, but there is nothing they can do with the port slowdowns.

And yet, they wouldn't have to worry about things out of their control if they would simply stop announcing and spoiling things 6 months before there is even a chance of getting it. Pretty easy solution.

I know it is and isn't their fault, but still, Rant Rant Rant! :P

There are things they could do to prevent such a long lead...

Somewhere out in the Pacific there is an island that has all of our wave 5... They can only play with wave 5! Oh, I can't bear to watch! :P

They announce things way ahead of time to give retailers a heads-up, allowing them plenty of time to order stock, which lets FFG know how much product to make in the first place. That's all understandable.

But what FFG could do differently is give us much less spoilery information when the product is announced, and not give us spoiler articles until the product is on the boat (and thus about two months away from release). Then I think we'd all be more excited about the new stuff when it comes. As it is now, I think we mostly buy stuff out of obligation and not from hype.

Wave 5 was a particularly bad situation because FFG likes to release stuff early at GenCon to make a big splash at that convention, and they planned on Wave 5 hitting stores just six weeks after GenCon ended. But the release was pushed back eight weeks, seemingly because of issues outside of FFG's control.

So what would you do when the pre-orders went up at the same time we got announcements? Get just as impatient about not knowing what the ship does. I prefer this way, because this way I can sort of plan ahead of time. Should they have not also given out the Firespray and Falcons to the 2012 Worlds finalists, because that spoiled those two ships completely a good 6 months in advance. Vs the complete spoilers of Wave 5 that came out 4 months.

I personally Enjoy the idea of not knowing what it will be other than the actual ship. I can understand wanting to be able to prepare, and people will always complain given the chance, but this is a touch on the ridiculous side. Now that the game is getting well established, the kinks should be getting ironed out more than they have been. I like that they give dibs to finalists and such, but again, the lead time is far too excessive for the actual release. I don't really mind the spoilers, just the 6 month ahead spoilers...

FFG is awesome when it comes to listening to the community and fixing errors or oversights on ship mechanics, why not on this type of stuff too?

I thought they only gave away Millennium Falcons to the 2012 Worlds winners.

And anyway, everyone who attended the Kessel Run events a month later got to see all the Wave 2 ships, which isn't that much time.

Yes, because FFG has complete control over the dock workers.

The announcements aren't that bad in terms of spoilers. They actually don't tend to do the actual spoiler articles till much closer to release. It just happens the "on the boat" status is where uncontrolled delays can happen. The Wave 5 situation isn't the standard.

It seems the norm to me, but I have only been into the game since Imperial Aces came out...

Now, it is entirely possible that I am wrong, as many times I am, but ....

Me thinks some of you just don't get it. FFG could work with their suppliers, buyers, shippers, etc. as far in advance as they want, and provide them all of the information they require to determine what they need to provide, what they need to buy, etc.

..... WITHOUT TELLING ALL OF US !!!!

It may come as a surprise to some of you, but many organizations in the business world, including game makers, actually come out with products without anyone realizing they were even in the pipeline. Further, it is possible to release stuff without spoiling every last little bit of detail. It is possible. Some of you think it is not. You are wrong.

How long has it been since wave 4? 6 months? how much slower do you want it?

Yeah, I think the releases have slowed considerably from the pace earlier this year if we go by unofficial release dates:

August 2012: Core Set/Wave One soft launch
4 months
December 2012: Wave Two soft launch
8 months
August 2013: Wave Three soft launch
7 months
March 2014: Imperial Aces official launch
1 1/2 months (6.28 weeks)
April 2014: Rebel Transport official launch
3/4 month (3.14 weeks)
May 2014: Tantive IV official launch
1/4 month (1.28 weeks)
May 2014: Wave Four soft launch
2 1/2 months (10.71 weeks)
August 2014: Rebel Aces, Wave Five soft launch
5 months?
January 2015?: Wave Six official launch

and how many ships have been in those "waves"?

the release schedule is fine...3 ships every 3-4 months with special releases 2-3 times a year is fine...you want to see too many releases? go look at Wizkids.

Probably because once the pre-orders go out to the stores, it will come out to us. Because a lot of the stores will tell their regulars to try and gauge interest. Thus, it will come out to us. And really, the announcements with some spoilers are there to build excitement, to help encourage pre-orders, which only helps the store, and thus FFG further up the line.

And really, this isn't nearly as bad as Wizkids. Sure, they don't have spoilers out, but they have their sell sheets for out to June 2015. At worst, we are looking at one or two release after the upcoming one.

I don't think there will be a wave 7 until closer to Gencon 2015. I'm guessing an aces pack -- hopefully for some of the OT ships...

Its always seemed that FFG has had two product lines in the queue for us to look forward to. With Wave 5 on its way any day now, this only leaves wave 6 left in waiting. I have a feeling we should be seeing an announcement of a new product within the week. The question becomes what wil we see? Will it finally be the Empire Hugh ship(s), an addition to the Aces line up or a full new wave 7? I would be will ing to bet it's Wave 7 with 2 scum ships and 1 ship each for empire and rebels. What says you?

With Wave 5 expected to hit store shelves next week a lot of people are going to be getting a chance to use those ships for the first time which is going to create plenty of activity within the community on its own.

They also haven't finished spoiling Wave 6 yet and it seems highly probable that they finish off those spoilers before making another release announcement.

I'm betting we don't get another release announcement until late December. And if you see the lead time on the Imperial Aces, Transport and Tantive from announcement to release my money is on an Imperial Huge announcement or some Aces type release featuring the TIE Advanced.

Well as many have said they are not, NOT, Wizkids!

We already have an Imperial Hug ship, it's the Decimator :P .

I get why most people are in the camp for slowing the releases down. They have slowed considerably compared to the beginning of the year. The one prediction of wave 7 at Gencon with only 1 aces between then is a little crazy if you ask me. The movie Hype will start in a few short months, and by that I mean for the non Star Wars nerds. Once the marketing campaign starts for the new movie FFG will want to have a few releases to tie in with the movie. It's a rear thing to tie in Star Wars product with a Movie release. If it is all planned out properly we could see the biggest influx of new players into X-Wing ever!!

I'm okay with releases slowing down as soon as...

My wedge shaped Imperial Huge is in my hot little hands. Epic Star Destroyer?

I've just recently got into X Wing and noticed that some of the announcement to release delays were close to a year when I was looking at the wave 1 and 2 products. I just don't see the point in saying ... look at this great new product you can have in 365 days. 3 months is plenty of notice for a new product. I don't know if FFG uses the time to see how much interest there is in their newly announce products but I think if there's too much time between announcement and release the interest may actually wane by the time it comes out.

After having to rework a few games, I think (see Star Wars LCG), I think FFG is moving away from the game announcements before they are pretty much done. They announced X-wing a year before release, and there were some big changes from the original demo they showed.

I think Wave 7 has already been announced.

It's on the Asmodee site.

We may not get Wave 6 until February 2015. If a huge ship or an aces pack comes out after that, it's not crazy to think we might not get Wave 7 until GenCon 2015. That's only a six-month span between February and August.

Once the marketing campaign starts for the new movie FFG should want to have a reliable supply of all the iconic OT stuff available. If there is a big influx of potential new players before "the force awakens" is released and they are not able to buy the falcon, or slave 1 or y-wings or whatever, basically everything up through wave 3, then those potential new players will disappear just as fast.

Make sure everyone can get as much of the old stuff as they want before the new movie comes out, then blitz the hell out of us with the new stuff once it does.
