Two Gondor Decks Required!

By legolas18, in Strategy and deck-building

Alright, so first of all, to explain:

My friend and I have recently started all the way back at the beginning, in the core set. We made Silvan/Noldor decks for it, and we got through the first three in the core and the six in Shadows of Mirkwood all using the same decks (with a third deck joining us when needed, such as on Dol Goldur, with Aragorn as an honorary elf). Then we moved onto Khazad-Dum/Dwarrowdelf, making Dwarf decks. So far, we've gotten through all three in KD and the first five in Dwarrowdelf, and we are currently on Shadow and Flame, and I really don't think we'll ever beat it. So, we might skip it. But that leads me to my main point. Now we'll be on Heirs of Numenor/Against the Shadow, and we need Gondor decks to last all nine quests. But I'm having a hard time coming up with feasible options. I think that one of the decks will assuredly be Outlands, with Boromir (Leadership), Imrahil, and of course Hirluin. But the other one I'm not too sure about. I was thinking Denethor, Faramir, and Beregond, but that would completely leave out Spirit. Any suggestions?

Sorry for the long ramble, thanks for the help!

If you're talking about going against Heirs of Numenor and the Against the Shadow cycle, I would recommend Tactics Boromir. His attack and defense are great for Battle and Siege quests, since he can ready himself for combat afterward. If one of the decks is going to be an Outlands deck, then you'll only have one deck that focuses on the Gondor allies, so the bonus attack for allies that you get from Leadership Boromir is less necessary.

I think a Hirluin, Prince Imrahil, and Leadership Aragorn (it's technically his throne, so he fits) deck would work well for one. Then Tactics Boromir, Mablung, and Denethor/Eleanor maybe. I would suggest putting Steward of Gondor and Visionary Leadership on Boromir and/or Mablung. Then you can also use Gondorian Fire and (maybe) Blood of Numenor on that/those characters. If you really want Lore AND Spirit, then get rid of Mablung and put Denethor and Eleanor in. Either way you'll definitely want to include at least Vassal of the Windlord and Winged Guardian x3 into the deck and probably 2-3x Eagles of the Misty Mountains. They'll be essential for Battle/Siege questing too.

Visionary Leadership may not be all that essential if you can get the Outlands characters going, especially with Sword that was Broken on Aragorn. Also, since you'll likely want to be running eagles, as I mentioned, you won't have a whole lot more space for Gondor allies. Obviously, you could potentially replace Winged Guardian with Defender of Rammas, which would help, but I don't think you'd ever use the 1 willpower you'd give him anyway.

Back to Denethor and Eleanor. Denethor's scrying could completely save games and the same with Eleanor's cancellation, so I would argue for skipping Mablung and including those two. Too bad you can't scry beyond the first card to know whether or not to keep the treachery or cancel it with Eleanor, but some knowledge is far better than no knowledge.

I hope that discussion with myself has given you some ideas for what you want to do. :)

Right now I've settled on an extremely powerful deck I created a while back. It's a Tactics-Leadership Gondor deck that uses Aragorn (core), Tactics Boromir and Sam. It includes many tactics cards but its focus is in leadership, with cards such as envoys, captains and other weenies, Visionary Leadership and Sword that was Broken. Obviously Faramir and Steward. The thing is, Steward goes on Boromir, and then you give him Gondorian Fire, and that plus the Shield and many tactics allies such as outrider, defender of Rammas and the new guy in Celebrimbor's Secret pretty much take care of combat. If you're lacking Leadership resources just give a Song of King to Boromir. It's basically a three card combo, which I've recently think are pretty good. Galadriel is wonderful in that deck. Anyway, it's pretty strong, and in my games I smashed through these scenarios, the more difficult ones being Into Ithilen of course.

Thanks for the replies!

joezim007: Would a tri-sphere or dual-sphere omitting Spirit/Lore be more effective? Both spheres have great Gondor benefits. Of course, I guess I could just do a third player.

Gizlivadi: Awesome deck! Do you have a companion deck to go along with it?

If you can play with 3 decks, that might be the strongest bet just because it'll make the greatest use of Visionary Leadership. It will also allow you some flexibility to use all the Gondor heroes that you want, but may make you want to use some other heroes as well.

For instance, with three decks I'd leave the first deck as is, but make the second deck mono-tactics with Boromir, Beregond, and Mablung, but you may also want to try Thalin in there because he can contribute decently in battle and siege while also eliminating some nasty 1-hit point enemies.

In the third deck I'd probably go with Denethor, Eleanor, and Galadriel. The big reason for Galadriel is to keep the tactics deck from threating out from overuse of Boromir's ability.

Another idea would be to use Sam in the Mono-Leadership deck and then use Lore Aragorn in the deck with Boromir in order to reset your threat.

What if I stuck strictly to heroes with the Gondor trait, including both Aragorns and Hirluin?

I would run one deck with Hirluin, Aragorn (Le), and Imrahil and the other deck with Beregond, Eleanor, and Faramir. The Leadership deck would be pretty straightforward with Outlands, willpower boosters, resource generation, and swarms of allies. The other deck would have fewer allies, but you could buff up Faramir with Ranger Spikes, Wingfoot, Daggers of Westernesse, and Hands Upon the Bow to make him a beast. He's especially good for battle questing.
