Heirs of the Blood Expansion

By any2cards, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

So, the LOS rules in descent is stupid (IMO), its just sp easy to figure out if 2 guys have los to each other. Now, i have no clue on how it is in Imperial assault, but if it is as easy as in Descent and better, well, hit me i would like to know and implement to descent.

So my true point is, what is the LOS rules in imperial assault?

The interesting aspect of LOS in IA is that it is possible to NOT have reciprocal LOS.

In IA, you have to choose one of the attacker's corners and draw two lines to different corners of the target, without being impeded by things that block LOS to have successful LOS to the target. In addition, a figure does not themselves block LOS to any of their own corners.

hmm, valid point. Far more realistic, but adds some complexity (though it isnt much)

First time I've heard someone complaining that LoS is too easy to figure out. =P

Honostly, its pretty easy to figure out, you dont think so? I really like that it is that easy, but they also make it near impossible to prevent LOS, but it makes the game more floating (you can say that in english?, i mean it is not disturbed when checking LOS)

Yes, Chav, it helps the game flow. Accurate or not, that is my favorite part about D2E's line of sight- figuring it out is easy.

Yes, I do think so. It's just not something people usually complain about. =P

Usually when people complain about LoS, it's that it's too hard to figure out if A has LoS to B. Or that situation X creates a corner case where LoS ought to exist, but doesn't (or vice versa.) Basically, they complain about things that make game play too hard, not too easy.

So, I found it amusing to see you doing the opposite. I didn't mean to belittle your point (hopefully that's not how you felt; I'm sorry if you did.)

The good news is that LoS as a mechanic is very portable. As long as everyone in the game is using the same LoS rules, you can make them whatever you want and it shouldn't dramatically alter game balance. So, if you like the IA LoS rules, I would suggest you use them instead while playing D2E and hopefully your play experience will be better. =)

Keeping the game streamlined and flowing is one of the main reasons why I´m still playing this after these years.

I can understand why people would think other LOS systems than D2E's own may be more realistic or tactically interesting, but I see absolutely no reason to dismiss the D2E rules. They make sense in every way, looking at what it achieves considering the game mechanisms. It's not a couple of weird situations that would make it automatically bad in my mind.

When I think about the [very] few situations when me and my players need to "interrupt the game flow" to address LoS, it always comes down to drawing the line and that's it. Some RPG backgrounds may scream at a few of these situations, but D2E has never been a simulation anyway, plus people are free to implement their own set of rules if they think it destroys the game experience. I see no reason why it would, but to each people his own.
