Heirs of the Blood Expansion

By any2cards, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

I must say that this is definitely unexpected (at least for me). An expansion that is simply a new campaign book. Not sure exactly what I think about this. It is an interesting approach, almost like the Quest Compendium for D1e.

Thoughts?

Just check out the Heirs of Blood Campaign before you judge it.

This is for me one of the biggest disapointment I ever seen for Descent series. FFG released lots of expansion, why they are working on campaign guide that contains only the "Base game" content? For me definitely not to buy. It is totally wasting potential of expansions...

This campaign is unlike any set of quests so far. Not all expansions have to have miniatures or introduce new tokens!

Remember, components are nothing without the quests to back them up.

Heirs of Blood allows anyone who owns Descent 2 to experience a new, very comprehensive adventure. It doesn't have new pieces, but we already have a lot of expansions with new pieces. This campaign will lengthen your gameplay more than new pieces can!

When I first seen the lowest image of the article, before reading the article itself - I thought it was a campaign where you can play Elize and her fellow comrades. Oh well... :(

I am looking forward to it. I am sure it will be a very good campaign. And it certainly gives us more replayability.

By the way, does anyone else love the new artwork?

I think Descent should have looked like this from the very beginning. I like this darker and more threatening atmosphere. It calls for real Heroes instead of some cartoon figures.

As someone with a bit of insight into that product, I have to say it is an awesome campaign to play. Defenitely worth to get if you are concerned about the Shadow Rune Campaign.

Morthai ... it would seem from the description of the product that the campaign will only leverage aspects of the base game (tiles, etc.).

Is this really the case? If it is, that is unfortunate. They had an opportunity with this product to tie all (or some) of the expansions together. They could have identified on the product what expansions were required to play the campaign.

Never the less, I will probably purchase it, as I would expect that the designers should have had plenty of time and play testing, not to mention experience from FAQ entries etc., to produce a superb product - I hope this is indeed the case.

I actually really like the idea of just a campaign book being released. As someone who already owns both big box expansions, two small box expansions, the CK and first ed monsters, I want more to do with what I already have. This was the main reason I liked the co-op expansion so much, it was a new and fresh way of using the materials I already owned.

This looks great:) thanks!

Really excited by this, I don't mind this being base game components only as I assume if it sells well then future books would include components from other expansions.

What kind of price point is this going to be? What price point makes it not worth getting?

I feel you on the idea of new campaign books including monsters/maps from other expansions but I am sure FF knows all that does is narrow the pool of possible buyers to those who already own the needed expansions. I know this means that the quests will most likely feel and look like the ones out of the base game, but it will have more people picking it up since it is limited to the base game.

Maybe they will release campaign books that are follow-ups to the big box expansions for those of us who do have those expansions and want new content for those map tiles and monsters.

I don't think it ever will.

As it is, all campaign "adds" expansion through monster traits, items, heroes and classes.

Forcing a player to own an expansion only for some tiles would not be a good idea money wise only

Well it says 24.95 on it's product page.

As far as being worth getting... that depends on how much of the content you already own and have exhausted playing. I myself haven't gotten around to playing through all of the campaigns that came with the expansions I've bought so it may not be entirely worth it since I want to play through those first. BUT, I do like the fact that I have more options in campaigns without having to purchase another big box.

This might also be way for FFG to tell Descent fans that "we haven't forgotten about you" without devoting all the resources it would take to make a big box expansion while those resources are devoted to launching Imperial Assault.

Wow, Eliza as the main villain? I never thought I'd see the day when I would contemplate picking up her Lieutenant Pack!

She is such a weak lieutenant though (largely considered the worst one, in fact...).. can she really carry so many quests on her shoulders? I wonder if they'll give her a bunch of buffs in the quest rules.. she definitely could use them.

I am a little bummed that it is base-set only.. but if they allow for at least a few open groups in each quest than I can at least use most of my expansion content...

So many tiles are going to remain unused though :(

Its probably not going to happen, but if its cheaper and faster for them to bring out these sorts of campaign books, it would be sweet to see more which allow the use of our expansion tiles and features like portcullis, foliage, elevation, etc...

This expansion has me excited. I very much like the idea of more quest content- I don't mind in the slightest that is has no new physical bits- the quests themselves may feature interesting mechanics, and it's just another adventure to put in the rotation to keep the others from becoming stale (though that will take awhile.) As long as the price point for this expansion is more on par with the co-op expansions than the big boxes, I'm entirely for it.

I love this idea. As someone who only owns the Base set, I'm really glad to see a new campaign that doesn't require extra investment in money or shelf space for boxed expansions.

Dissapointed.

We can create our own quests.

Would have better seen a new big fresh box.

they are wasting their ideas for quests and then we get such generic quests in our real expansions.

not a good idea. 32 quests. and then design 19 more for the new big box.

can they do this without beeing repetetive?..

I suspect, as others have, that this type of expansion may be a stop-gap to keep our attention, and to get through the release of Imperial Assault, etc.

Having said that, even this type of expansion takes significant planning, design effort, and (hopefully) play testing. In fact, what I hope is that since the game does not come with tiles, monsters, new abilities, heroes, etc., the quality of the actual quests will be superior to what we have seen to date.

I especially like that they've kept "part of the Runebound universe." Every time I see that logo, it makes me think Runebound 3 is going to come out sometime in my life.

Wow, so exciting! I was hoping they'd release a book at some point. I'm a little disappointed it only includes stuff from the base game. Sure, they'd be cutting out some players who don't have all the expansions, but maybe some optional quests with the expansion monsters and whatnot would be acceptable. I'm sad we never see anything but the main 9 monsters in the story missions.

That would be amazing as well! Can we also just talk about how spectacular the artwork is of the Farrows doing battle? So. Cool.

I share Zaltyre's excitement.

It's true that Heir of the Blood requires only the base set.

But as I understand it, it's exactly the same as any other D2E expansion: ie. just requires base set to work.

There's not gonna be any elevation or Portculils or allies. No big deal.

I just need to choose which expansions to add to the base game (in my case, all that I've got), and then choose the heroes and open groups and overlord cards and etc.as I please.
