Building a Vigil-class corvette

By ldodt, in X-Wing

I have a 300pt game comming up and my friends CR-90 is giving me all sorts of ship envy, how dare thoes upstart rebels feild a ship thats bigger then mine!

So i've set about prining off templates for a 1/500 and 1/600 scale Vigil and my number crunching puts it at 51cm long for the 1/500 scale and about 40cm for the 1/600. The thing pretty much dominates a quarter of the 3ft x 3ft board. While the 40cm ship looks like it would be easier to play with and implement rules wise.

I think im going to stick with the 1/500 scale the CR-90 this might come back to haunt me but it definatly gives that big dagger shaped ship feel i want from it. The width of the ship might become a hassle its 38cm wide wich if i set up the bases in a line like the CR-90 and the rebel transport might lead to a tipping problem as it has to balance up high on an 8cm wide base.

I really want it to be able to slot into the rules for huge ships as easy as possible so making use of the huge movement template and not having such huge a footprint on the board it runs over all smaller ships when it does thoes turns. While just giving it a large triangle base with three supports might solve the tipping issue it might make things un-fun if it just runs over evey ship in whatever quarter of the board it happens to be in.

Maybe im just over thinking things and the 8cm wide base will be fine when arranged in the way the other huge ships are. Materials wise im going to try a polystyrine foam dagger shape with pannels applyed over the top of it to form the hull.

Im going to try and be as detailed as I can with this project hopefuly have some pic's for you guys soon.

I just repainted my CR90 so i can use it for either faction as its now grey and black with no rebel 'red' on it.

How wide is the smaller version? And any chance you could post the templates you are using?

the 1/600 is just under 30cm wide, its probbly a better gameing scale but looking at them both i figger why not go the extra 10cm. for templates i resized and cropped the black background off some images from fractalsponges gallery page (http://fractalsponge.net/gallery/Vigil/index.html#), I love the design of the ship and for anyone who wants that "star destroyer" vibe for x-wing this is pretty much the only ship that will do it short of a 1m long monster.

Other ships i considered:

Imperial II-class: 80cm long at 1/500 scale, at that lenght it would probbly make a better terrain peice for epic games

Imperial Customs Corvette: 36cm long (1/500), not a big fan of the split hull look might get fiddly to build. It probbly is a closer analog to the CR-90 where as the vigil seems more of a "heavy corvette".

Regarding the base, I'd make it in a T like shape with two bases in line and then two bases at the back. measurements and turns would be taken from the rear most forward base to prevent excessive fishtailing.

That will probbly be the way i go with it Eltnot. Hopefully I wont run over too many of my own ties like that.

The red on the CR90 marks it as a senate ship. So it actually works as an Emp ship already. Though blue does look better!

For the passed week I've been wondering to myself: "what is stronger, 200pts of CR-90 or 200pts of Decimators"

Regarding the base, I'd make it in a T like shape with two bases in line and then two bases at the back. measurements and turns would be taken from the rear most forward base to prevent excessive fishtailing.

I came up with a similar idea. Here is the foot print in relation to a CR-90

However I was considering mine for a Imperial/Victory class star destroyer.

If you scared of Tipping have you entertained the Idea of making the model more narrow? A Vigil-Class Variant. You've picked the class for it's dagger shape; your sketch shows an Equilateral Triangle, try something more Isosceles. Some times Architecture needs to concede to structural requirements.

lvlerlin: I had thought about scaling back the width to a more sleek and narrow looking design but the tipping might not end up being an issue if the model itself ends up light enough. Might just work with what i have and try the suck it and see approch. if it dosnt work out i can allways cut it up and make a nice terrain peice out of it and then start over.

Marinealver: The dock zone's a good idea too im just guessing by the picks but i think the Vigil's got a sixteen tie-fighter docking bay at the fornt of the underside of the ship.

I just repainted my CR90 so i can use it for either faction as its now grey and black with no rebel 'red' on it.

Interesting fact, red is actually the senate color, not the Rebel's color. :)

Of course the rebels are trying to restore the senate so they use it.

Regarding the base, I'd make it in a T like shape with two bases in line and then two bases at the back. measurements and turns would be taken from the rear most forward base to prevent excessive fishtailing.

Wouldnt it make more sense to measure from the rear, since that is where the thrusters are?

Decided to build a prototype out of cardboard and things so i can get a better idea how it should go together and so i know how much plasticard ill need to finish the project.

dat pizza hut red. his true colors are senate.

Handy thing is if im running short of building materials i can just order another pizza :P

Yar!

Dodt, that is a great idea you have there, cannot wait to see more...

We have about twenty pizza the hutt boxes sitting in the recycle bin, we usually order from them two or three times a week.

Nice idea... but I am going to wait a bit longer.
