ADV Sensors on a Phantom?

By ShortrangeLongbow, in X-Wing

I'm not sure if this has been discussed here, so my apologies if it has.

What are the implications of putting Adv Sensors on a Phantom?

I was thinking about it and I like Buzzing Whisper. But, with Adv., much more unpredictability on final position, and therefore more arc dodge capability.

Thoughts?

Ive been reading up on this a bit too. Just flew Whisper at a tournament for the first time last weekend. (ACD, Gunner, VI, Sensor Jammer). I loved playing it, but was pretty disappointed with Sensor Jammer. Adv Sensors gives you a little more flexibility with your movement options. Its my understanding that you can use the order of your Adv Sensor Action and Decloak which is just silly. Adv Sensor get even better with Echo.

Heres a link I found on the "Helpful Links" post floating around on the forums. you can click barrel roll, boost, or ADV Sensors on the right side options. It defaults to Echo, so just click the phantom at the bottom of the page and it will bring up Whisper(cant figure out how to go back to Echo without reloadng the page though).

I put Adsensors on a phantom, gives a bit more leeway when moving - good for avoiding roids.

While Advanced Sensors would be a great way to make the Phantom even more unpredictable, consider that a Phantom is already a highly maneuverable ship. The Advanced Sensors upgrade shines best when performing a Red Maneuver or when purposely trying to crash into another ship (it can be used as insurance if it might crash by accident but not having this upgrade teaches discipline in flying one's ships). With enough practice and experience, you're really not going to need that K-Turn. And when a Phantom decloaks to attack, it is usually flying by itself so it shouldn't crash into friendly ships and you don't want to crash into the targeted enemy ship.

Also, Adv. Sensors costs 3 points. You might want to spend those 3 points on another upgrade or put the Adv. Sensors upgrade on another ship instead.

It doesn't hinder the Phantom and it does give it greater flexibility. However, when you choose something you discard something else and I believe that there are better things you can put on a Phantom, like a crew member, an elite talent, or a hull upgrade for the same cost. Or you could save those 3 points to help make Adv. Cloaking Device a bit more affordable.

This is just my opinion but hope this helps!

Thanks for the input!

Personally, As I said, I love Buzz whisper, but am looking for something a bit different to try. I think with Adv Sensors you get a better reactionary ship. You don't have to anticipate quite as much when going against another ship, and get to react. In my experiences, being able to react is sometimes better than guessing where they will end up. Not every anticipation is going to be right.

Plus, you get the unpredictability of having barrel roll first.

I tried thinking out of the norm for the use of Adv Sensors, I don't think I have ever K-turned my phantom.

I understand the idea of giving something else up (Gunner, Rebel Captive, FCS, Etc) but I gain reaction for arc-dodge instead of gaining insurance for when I get shot.

I haven't flown it yet, but my build for her is:

Whisper (32)

Advanced Cloaking Device (4)

Veteran Instincts (1)

Advanced Sensors (3)

Bringing her in at 40

Sensor Jammer forever <3

It's like yesterday all over again!

I played Echo with Advanced Sensors once and I'm relatively certain the damage done to my brain will someday result in seizures.
