Totally back to basics... generic x and t's

By Gadge, in X-Wing

Having a pub game on friday afternoon with my mate and to avoid taking tons of stuff to the pub with us we're going to have a 'stripped down' game of xwing.

All i'm taking is 4 x wings, and 8 tie fighters and the counters to use them, a mat, rulers, dice and generic pilot cards only.

Its going to be really wierd not relying on snazzy upgrade combos.

Might take some generic astromechs but i want to take as little as possible really.

Word of warning if you haven't run eight Ties before, it can be rather mentally taxing if you are planning a night of drinking and relaxing.

Edit: it's the too many cooks of X wing.

Oh ive done it before. Actually it was six led by darth vader to be thematic but i'm taking eight as the 'max' we could have but i assume whoever plays imps will take a mix of PS.

I might take some named characters but i just want to avoid taking hundreds of upgrade cards and losing them.

If i take 12 ships thats 4 target locks, 12 focus, 8 evade not the end of the world if i lose any of those.

I *may* take my recently finished gold squadron y wings along as i'm dying to fly all four and we're not going to get hammered just a few pints and a game in a quiet pub (we live in outskirt of nottingham that pretty quiet and calm so its not like getting a wargame out in a city bar :) )

I suggest R5's over R2's if you're going to add them to your X-Wing an early Direct Hit can be flipped over.

The last few games I've played I decided to go nice and simple. Only wave one ships, pilots, and upgrades. Wedge with swarm tactics, Biggs, a rookie pilot, and a gold squadron pilot with ion cannon turret is still a fun list.

I think i might not take any upgrade cards, just some named pilots, want to keep it nice and simple but im worried that the options of 'red' or 'rookie' could be a bit boring for whichever of us plays rebels.

I'll see what mark wants to do but it might be a case of 'one unique' leading a flight of generics each.

I really want to fly these guys as i just finished repainting my Y wing squadron tonight (i find the factory paint scheme really weak and insipid) but taking Y wings means taking turret cards really as to me thats the whole point of Y wings.

Those do look better.

For pub game purposes, can't you both assume all y-wings have ion cannons and cost 5pts more? Then don't need to bring the upgrade cards.

8 TIEs if you can fly them well is extremely brutal. I've been destroying everything with them in the local scene including Whispers lists, Han with Farlander, etc. Have yet to actually lose a game with them (which is why I'm only playing them for tournaments or pre agreed with my opponent).

Good call on theY wings, yeah will probably do just that if i take them. :)

I don't think I could go back to the same pub after playing X-Wing there... people might think I was drinking weird cocktails or alco-pops that came with weird looking plastic cocktail sticks! :P

Nah its nottingham, its the 'lead belt'... the sillicone valley of wargames and a town with two huge universitys so people are used to people playing everything from trivial pursuit to warhammer fantasy roleplay in the pub.

In fact most the pubs we go to have a pile of board games you can just take off the shelf and play :)

We play xwing in the pub quite often

I also live in a uni town.... drinking is a serious past-time here, I think our town's motto is "Drink Casually...because tomorrow might be the end of the World!!!!"

Who even has CD cases anymore? ;)

How many E-Wings do you have? A friend of mine took 2x RSP w R7 in a recent game and my goodness are they annoying.

It really messed with my target priority asO would deliberately shoot at targets that didn't haves target lock on my ship.

I've got one e wing , bought for the astromech cards.

Cant stand the look of them and they seem a bit too expensive to be worth it.

I'm a DJ, i run a night in a club with CD decks... i have thousands of CD cases :)

I am moving to Nottingham.

I moved here for a job in 99/2000 (editor with GW) and never really intended to stay that long (i'd just left the army and spent most my time of leave with my girlfriend in westminster so i really loved being in London at the time).

Stayed for five years with GW but loved the city that much i'm still here 10 years after that.

Its got so much gaming, so much alternative music stuff... loads of companies are set up by ex gw staff so based here (mantic, warlord, wargames illustrated, battlefronts uk offices, wargames foundry etc etc). Its big enough for there to be tons of things to do but small enough not to be engulfing. When i lived in london it could takes *hours* to travel a few miles if there was a tube strike. I could probably walk across most of Nottingham city in a morning (when i could walk well).

Its also architecturally beuatiful, never really got bombed and the city centre, when you look above shop window level is stunning. Its got a lot of culture, a lot of history, great bars and restaurants and....

allegedly because of the high student population between 5 and8 young women for every young guy proportionally depending on which tales you believe (i know for a fact brackenhust campus just outside the city has a 9-1 girl to boy ration but they do all the equestrian and veterinary studies there). I'm married now but certainly when i was younger and first moved here i was amazed with how many pretty girls there were here.

My fave city in the UK and i've lived in a fair few of them and visited and stayed in most.

I've a hankering to move to Berlin as i *really* love berlin and i can do my job from anywhere in the world but the wife works in higher education so really needs to be in the UK.

The universities are good in notts too. My wife works at Nottingham Trent (ive worked for them in the past too) and I did my post grad at Univeristy of Nottingham so i know both have excellent standards.

I'm not sure if you were joking but if you are moving here, you wont regret it.

its great.

Ties are the second most efficient craft, I think. Generic X-Wings are not. I predict a frustrating slaughter for the X-Wings.

Well we'll see how it goes, i may take the Y wings too and if the first game is a wipe out we can make the match up asymetric and give the imperials a few less points.

We're playing for the sake of playing so unless its so one sided to be 'not fun' its not goingto be an issue if the imperials seem to have the upper hand.

Marks not that experiences in the game so i'll suggest he plays imperials

(its so ironic im a cosplay tie fighter pilot but always end up playing rebels as everyone else wants to be imperials)
