Green Squadron

By PenguinBonaparte, in X-Wing

A friend of mine bet me $400 that they were red. Luckily he is also kind. But look at the card. I never noticed because it's so murky, but it's red. Apparently it's also the case in the LCG. Forget not being able to obtain Biggles cards, this is a travesty! I repainted one of my A-wings to be green and then found this out. For shame!

But really though, what gives?

maybe it's green for "greenhorn"

explains the Ps 3 :P

It's just a colour. Doesn't have to necessarily match the paint job on the actual craft, although sometimes it does.

For instance, Black Squadron isn't black. ;)

blue squadron isn't very blue....is it? i don't know. squad colors are more for call signs than the colors on the crafts, right? at least that's what i've always thought.

I remember reading somewhere that the colours were used to designate and coordinate large groups. Colours used were normally Gold (Yellow), Green, Red, and Blue. If you listen closely in RotJ Lando is referring to 'groups' which means that the fighter wing quite large to use colour groupings and squadrons within colours.

I thought it was because they have green flight uniforms. Nevertheless, I have both green and red A-Wings that make up my greens.

I believe the history is they originally had the A-Wings in the RotJ battle sequences painted green, but that it caused issues with the green screen, so they had to repaint them red for the movie. Hence why Green Squadron flies "red" A-Wings.

Can anyone confirm?

That makes sense, as a similar thing happened in ANH. R2D2 is black at the Battle of Yavin because of the blue screen, and 'Blue Squadron' was changed to 'Red Squadron'.

I think I was close.

From wookieepedia:

Production paintings for Return of the Jedi show the A-wing painted in blue markings, but these were changed to red to allow the models to be filmed for bluescreen.

I imagine green would also not have worked overly well.

But.... Red, Gold, and even the Grey on the Grey Squadron card! I just figured the Blue Squadron card didn't really show the markings all that well, but they're kind of a teal of a thing.

In XWA, your ship matched the color of the squadron it was in...

*Ywings look on suspiciously

I think its just a designation like 'alpha squadron' 'delta fireteam' etc and has not relation to the colour the ships accents are painted in.

It would make sense if the colour accent was, as said, denoted tactical larger groupings but withing that large group of 'red squadron' you might have some xwings with red markings, some blue A wings etc but their call signs would all be related to the larger grouping.

Green squadron A wings are as said 'red' (maroon) and i think the flight suit thing possibly is dependant on what you're flying.

X and Y wing pilots tend to have orange ones, B wing pilots have red/puce ones and A wing pilots have black or green flight suits from what i've seen in the films and toy ranges.

maybe they only have green skinned pilots??

I think Arvel knocks that one on the head (or the bridge...) :)

Green squadron human pilot in a red and white A wing tricky eh?

Slighly on a tangent, i guess its because ANH was made on a budget but as a kid who loved his y wing fighter i always felt it was a shame Y wing pilots didnt have a unique toy figure... it was just the same pilot as the xwing... ditto snowspeeders.

But are those non-red sections white.....

...or a light olive green?!?!?!?!?

I always wondered about that. Because in the near-simultaneous marvel comics, the X-wings are 'Blue Squadron'. I guess they were working off the original scripts and didn't get the post-production memo.

I had the original novelization as a kid, and they were Blue in that one too. As you suggested, typically the authors asked to do the novelizations are given early copies of the "final" script to work off of. The Alien 3 comic book and novelizations, for example, have several scenes that were cut from the final theatrical cut, or never even filmed. In the old days, the production and publication of the novelizations were done independently enough that they just didn't care about reconciling the novel with the final film. Would likely also involve paying the author (or someone else) to do rewrites.

Sorry Sir - I was google-searching about Green Squadron, found this topic and responded, having not noted the vintage.

Please Sir, don't make me stand in the naughty corner - I'll never do it again...

(...I might  )
