Wave I vs Game - components

By Julia, in Star Wars: Armada

Hi folks,

sorry for the very elementary question, but it's easier and quicker to ask the experts more than digging through description pages, and threads about speculations and so on. So, question:

Do the models individually released as "wave I" add something that is not included in the core set? I mean: are there exclusive cards / upgrades or stuff like that like it was done when individual exp packs for the Tie Fighters and X-Wings were released for X-Wing?

Thanks for help

This would seem indicatively to be the case, with set cards unique to the expansions.

And of course there are ships and fighters not included in the core set that are part of Wave 1.

Thanks! Not so sure if I'm happy with the answer, but at least I know the environment :D

Sure. Apologies for the original bad wording. I was simply wondering what to do, since a second core set would probably be cheaper than getting the duplicate individual ships one at a time. Anyhoo, still a load of time to decide what to do.

Thanks again!

If I remember correctly, they did say at GenCon that the wave 1 ships would have different upgrades then the ships with the core set. Same way X-Wing does.

That means that most likely a 2nd set is not a good value, or at least not as good as a 2nd X-Wing core is. With X-Wing you can use pretty much everything that comes with it, but that doesn't seem to be true with Armada.

With a 300 point game, you will be able to fit at most 2 VSD's into a list. Fighters seem to be fairly imporant, and then you have the commander. So given the point values we know, there just isn't room for 3 VSD's.

That really cuts down on the value of a 2nd core set, because you're now paying $100 for $50ish worth of stuff that you can really use. Figure the VSD is 40, and you get a bunch of Ties and X-Wings that you likely won't need... So the question is, is the $50 worth of ships and dice + template, damage cards, ect... worth the price of a 2nd core set?

Also looking at the RSP, buying the ships that come in the core set individually comes to about $20 cheaper than a second core set.

You will most likely need more than one copy of each ship from the core set and buying the extras separately seem to come up cheaper than buying a second core set.

Yeah, you'll see upgrades and the like not in core. That said, there appears to be a need for at least 1-2 expansions to field a fleet anyway. :3

I thought except for the Mark II Frigate and Gladiator all the ships were the same.

So the only real difference is the cards on those expansions.

Think It comes down to your specific play group. Having a second set of the core components can greatly help with things like breakage/loss and the extra dice around can speed up play. The price is fairly high, but Me and my roommate will probably buy into a ... pool? stable? *shrug* collection of ships like we did with Xwing.

The fighters are different, as I believe the only ones included in the core are X-wings and Ties, Looking at the costs though it probably is cheaper to buy individual ships because I believe it comes to 90$ for the 3 Capital ships if you buy them individually (once you factor in the extra dice and fighters it closes the gap)

I didn't see a Howlrunner card in the Imperial Fighters expansion pack, which means that much like X-Wing you get different upgrade cards in the core set and the expansions of the ships found in the core set.

I dont know about that - from the Gencon table the VSD was 75 points, so you might have the option to take 4 in a 300 point game, albeit with no support but thats probably just silly. You could take 3 VSD's and 8 generic TIE squadrons (at 9 points each), they can take 3 each but that would put you over the points cap if you took the last one. But more likely there would be a better points value at 2 VSD's, some higher quality fighters and another ship like a gladiator. So two core sets could have value given you would also get a second damage deck (if you plan on playing larger battles you dont have to share with your mate), a second set of dice (for when larger ships inevitably arrive) and a second movement template (so you dont have to share with your mate), but the expansion would give you unique cards, so yet again, we will want to buy them all ;)

You're forgetting the commander that's 25+ points. Assuming of course that's part of the finished product. So no, you can not fit 4 VSD's in a 300 point list.

The most you could fit would be 3, but that's 250 points for just the ships and commander. That leaves little left for upgrades or fighters.

Supposedly the fighters expansion has Mithel instead.
