Paranoia and other talents removed

Do i read this correctly — paranoia, rapid reaction, lightning reaction, dual-shot/dual-hit and some other talents are compelty gone?

Is there a specific reason? They were really useful, especially the talents that allowed you to negate surprise effect and such. Traps and ambushes are huge part of the game after all.

My opinion? They were too strong/useful/unbalanced. Lightning Reaction, for example, pretty much let characters ignore the Intiative system. Rapid Reaction basically threw Ambushes out the window. It's really hard to balance encounters if one or two talents disrupt game mechanics. Old talents like the ones you've listed are less about the character learning to perform a task better and more about ignoring fundamental concepts.

Just because Talents aren't explicitly listed in the book doesn't mean you can't use them for yourself, however. That's where the beauty of homebrewing comes in. Generally, Talents and things are removed for a reason. Maybe rules were changed or the higher-ups decided that certain mechanics were exploitable. Some Talents may have simply evolved into something different over the years. A little bit of effort and creativity is all it takes to revive a Talent in a healthier form.

I'm inclined to agree with Asymptomatic. Yes, they were powerful - but that's part of the problem. Generally speaking, advances that partly or wholly invalidates core game mechanics should be avoided.

I'm surprised they still haven't axed the things that give blanket immunities to Fear and/or Pinning, and such.
