Tales from the Hydian Way

By Deuterium Ice, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

I did purchase a new mic recently. Not sure why my old one started to get wonky....

Mate I am generally enjoying things and I thank you for what you are doing. I think I am about 8 episodes in at this time.

But I can't help myself, are you sure you had a dead mic or to Stephen Hawking want his voice box back?

The content is great, your podcasting skills will come (and already you have very noticeably improved)

I am subscribed to around 30 podcasts, I get through some 4-6 hours of them a day! some I have been listening to for over 400 episodes. Everyone starts out just like you have.

The important thing is your content is different, your style (both individually and in you editing) is different, your production quality is high and your improving.

Yep, appreciate the quality improvements in the latest episode, and I may now be brave enough to try more than a simple space chase. Looking forward to more!

I have not listened to the latest couple of shows, although I have been listening in from the fisrt episode, just a little behind the the times for now.

As to the quality and production value. I did find that the early shows were a little rough, and some parts were hard to hear. I would have my volume at max, and still could not hear it, and that would be my iPad/iPhone or in my car, which has a Harmon Kardon system! While some parts were low in volume, each episode did have a great couple of guys at the helm, and are enjoyable to listen to. The newer episodes are really are starting to sound better, well except for that one a few weeks ago with the dying mic. :) I think it is totally awesome that you guys are getting some of the FFG guys on to talk about the game!

So thank you guys for the great podcast, and you are much braver than I am to do this. I am a GM, and have many years of public speaking in my background, but I have no desire to record myself and edit it! That unto itself is very noteworthy. :)

I've have few different types of mics. If you want to hear the difference between them, I'm happy to read something and post it on Soundcloud.

sh*tty built-in mic on my laptop

Less sh*tty noise cancelling mics on my tablet

Blue Snowball (USB condenser mic - switches between Omnidirectional or Cardioid)

Electrovoice 635A (XLR dynamic mic - Omnidirectional) requires an audio Interface

Blue Bluebird (XLR condenser mic - Cardioid) requires an audio interface

I use the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 for my audio interface.

There’s some good info regarding mics for podcasting on the iDownloadblog page at http://www.idownloadblog.com/2015/02/07/podcasting-basics-part-ii-location-voice-microphones-and-hardware/

In short, if you’re traveling then the Apogee MiC is preferred. If you’re “at home” and you want a mic with a built-in USB interface, they like the Blue Yeti. If you’re willing to spend a bit more on an external audio interface, then the Heil PR 40 with the Apogee One as the XLR/USB interface.

Everything Apogee makes is great. They only work with Apple stuff though. Windows/Linux alternatives for interfaces would be RME, Focusrite or Presonus.

Nailed it!! :D

I would also love to here some thoughts on character generation. Making a good background, etc. The fluffy side of character generation more than the crunchy side.

We saw this when we were recording and thought we could tackle your topic on a bit of a spontaneous manner. This may not quite be quite what you're looking for, but it's what we came up with.

I'm getting close to having the sound mix where I want it now and I think we should be good moving forward with a few tweaks here and there.

Character Generation calls for the player to select a concept and background, these two selections are quite well done from a rules stand point as they can launch a player into fluff territory and helps come up with some great ideas for the fluffy character creations steps that it would seem that the fluff writes itself.

Looking forward to the new one.

I probably shouldn't post this here, but I can't find a "feedback" button MadAdventurers... I'm not sure if it's Safari, but all the page formatting is gone. It's just one long list of images and unstyled links.

I listened to the latest one. Seems to have a good and relevant discussion without all the annoying sound bits tacked on. I think I will go back through the archive and listen to some more.

Rambly!? How DARE you Sir! ;)

Thanks for addressing the topic, it makes a good show to point newer players to between sessions.

And I got a good chuckle out of "Oracle of Doom", yeah we've all met them! I find them, as discussed, to be an invaluable GM aid :)

I took my first reading of the post instead of the second. It is a good topic, and I thank you for putting it to us.

For those wondering what MrDodger and I are talking about it is this weeks episode which can be found here. It's about the players point of view and how this system is different than most others.

All cool my friend, made me smile anyway :)

In running my lepskin game (which has been brought up on the show a few times) I've been worried that I have been abysmal for giving out gear. So I fired up the recorder and started talking to Cam about it.

From this an episode formed about how to give out credits and equipment in ways that are thematic and not feeling like you're giving the players "A Brand New Car!!!"

You can find the Episode here and you can find the show on twitter @@TheHydianWay

Yep, found the latest episode very helpful, thanks!

I have caught up on the last 4 episodes and really enjoyed each one of them. I even took some notes to try to incorporate into my game. :)

Well we have a bit of a treat for you this week. After last weeks slightly wandering show going from starships in a game and slowly finding our way to how to do a second story with the same group. This week we have Max Brooke on to talk about RPGs and a few of the reasons he does what he does.

Very cool (once I realised a few minutes in who the guest was - I thought we were going to be hearing about zombies for a minute! ;) )

It's always interesting getting any kind of insight from the people who actually made the game.

According to plan we did our look at Fly Casual. We had a bit of fun doing this one, it's a fun book.

We saw a trailer, it had a little bit of an influence on us. This led us to talking about how to do Age of Rebellion so it didn't feel like Edge of the Empire. Because of Rogue One we focused on the Rebellion, but most of the things we talk about can be applied to the Empire as well.

Cam and I got talking about how to get players involved with a campaign and how to get people interested for longer than the next loot score.

We also have a chance to look at duty and come up with a few ways of making it interesting and useful to the players from character creation on.
