Tales from the Hydian Way

By Deuterium Ice, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

We're still about and talking Star Wars. We have a new episode out from last Sunday talking about suspense and pushing players beyond their comfortzones. We also might talk about wookiees as werewolf analogues for a few moments.

It can be found on iTunes and otherwise at Mad Adventurers

(new thread since I just noticed I spelled the name of the show wrong in the other one)

So we've made it to a dozen numbered shows, and this one is talking about Knight Level play, even about our own usage of it and how we'd use it in the future.

you can find it at the two links above, or more directly here.

I really like this show, and would suggest everyone at least check it out. It's a different style from Order 66, being generally more focused on one or two topics each episode. Usually some good food for thought, especially for GM's.

Thank you Mr Dodger. We're trying to make something closer to what we'd like to hear.

This week we talk a little about The Legends and how we've used them for inspiration and how we've taken some archetypes that show up and use them at the table.

The new episode can be found here or through the iTunes link above.

I've been listening this to a while now. And while the show is generally informative, it sounds like you guys are reading directly off of a prepared script with about as much enthusiasm as a small child having to eat their vegetables at dinner.

I'm not saying you guys need to go the route of "wacky co-host" that GM Dave of O66 had in the past and that Sammy tries far too hard to do on Potelbat (and is frankly why I don't listen or even suggest folks listen to said podcast, along with Fiddleback's "stuck up gaming snob" persona that he tends to project on the shows I did listen to, which is a far cry to his far less snobbish and generally more relaxed persona he had back during the Game On! days). Frankly, it's almost as if you've had your arms twisted into doing the podcast rather than it being a voluntary thing on your part.

It's definitely noticeable in contrast to the Chris and Phil episodes of Order 66 where both of them convey the enthusiasm they have, both for Star Wars in general and for the RPG in particular. That's not to say you and Cameron don't have a similar degree of enthusiasm, just that it's not coming across in the podcast.

We're back with another informative episode. This time we're taking a look at Adventures, Campaigns and the implications of fleshing an adventure out into something more.

You can find our new episode here or through the iTunes link above.

This episode had good timing. I was running Episode II of "dead in the water" today and I was on the fence on whether I wanted to do episode III. You helped me make that decision.

Although with how my PCs handled the droids this evening, I shouldn't have worried. They're abandoning ship.

I'm glad that we could be a bit of help to you, it is certainly what we aim to do.

I see I haven't been here in a tiny bit and wanted also let you and the others know of two new episodes.

One we just put out about using criminal organizations in Star Wars, which I'm sure we'll be coming back to in about two months when Lords of Nal Hutta makes its way out to our hands.

The other is using large things on your table, from Exogorths to a fullscale Trandoshan on Wookiee war.

Stoll going strong and still giving a few areas new ways of looking at them.

First we've got this weeks where we start with a dare talking about what we couldn't do an episode about, but then finding that we could do a very full and passionant one about how to get plot ideas from your player characters back stories.

Second we have last weeks that start to deal with what happens after Session 0 and where do you go from there.

Another good listen guys, keep it up.

Could I offer a topic suggestion? I often hear you mention player engagement, player narrative, player interaction etc. maybe you could do a show from the perspective of a player, detailing some good ideas to bring to the table, and how the system is different from others for the players, being more architects of the story?

Not that I don't like the GM stuff btw! I am a GM and have picked up some useful stuff. I just thought a discussion from the other side of the table could be interesting.

Cheers!

Thanks for the idea MrDodger. I don't quite know how long it will be until we are able to get to it, but it most certainly is now on our very short list of "ideas to go with when we haven't thought of a show topic" document.

We have a few things planned now that my tauntaun riding smuggler has been able to brave the Canadian wampa frontier. successfully.

Oh and we do also have a new episode that can be found here or on the itunes link in the first post.

Well, another week and another new episode.

This one Cam and I talk about the supplement for Aces Stay on Target.

Come listen as we talk about The Fischer Tale.

We were lucky to get Andrew Fischer on the line for an interesting and enlightening interview.

Great episode. Really appreciate how you guys get right to the subject matter and good questions...

Guys - that was a really fun episode. I love the tight focus on the game and gaming experience.

Good times!

Found your podcast a week ago and i'm catching up quickly, half way through The Ace's Tale and loving it. I especially enjoy your style of looking less at the crunch and more about the story side of things, it works well. Keep up the good work.

We have a new episode about using the mechanics of Obligation, Duty, and Morality to keep your game fresh and going.

I'd say this is the episode where I've learned the most since starting it.

I really like the show. You pack a lot of good information and insights in without all the fluff :) I think I've heard almost all of your podcasts by now and have enjoyed every one. And I recognize Fiddleback's voice announcing you in the beginning, you nutty mad adventurers, you :D

If I could make a request... could you guys get better microphones? :) It can be a struggle hearing you sometimes, and as you're always coming up with really cool ideas, I want to make sure I catch everything. I haven't heard the last episode yet, so if you're already using better mics, then, as Emily Litella would say... "Nevermind" :)

I would also love to here some thoughts on character generation. Making a good background, etc. The fluffy side of character generation more than the crunchy side.

I agree, I was initially turned off by the relatively flat style of the podcast, something Donovan Morningfire alluded to earlier.

I recently went back and listened to a few episodes and I've been really enjoying the content a lot!

It would be awesome if y'all could upgrade the production values a little bit because I like what you're doing and want to hear it better!

i just love the approach you have taken with the podcast, i enjoy your narrative approach and every episode has bits for me to use as GM in my game.

i listen on headphones and the audio is fine, this could also be due to the Overcast app i use normalising the audio though as well.

Through the intervention of a despair Cams mic died. (really I have no idea, but he has a new one) He now has a new one, and I'm finally relatively happy to how mine is done. I'm continuously working on this to try and improve, and I think with Episode 24 I have a good balance. That being said Episode 23 is a little rough, but it gets better and I'm going to go back and fix it soon, though that's on a Blizzard time scale.

As such, we have our one foray into crunch with Episode 23 The Runaway Droid Tale Pt 1 our look at trying to explain in a less complicated fashion space combat.

We then followed this up with Episode 24 The Droids Strike Back Tale (Pt 2) and talked about how to integrate this into an adventure and campaign. We also brush up against the thought that you don't need all the rules all the time.

And both where a great listen, thanks again for some fine podcasting work. In ep 24 you mentioned that your always trying to get better at the "Roll to do x task quickly" as apposed to the "Roll to do x task" this is something i am really working on myself, so hearing your take's on it is very helpful.

Thanks for the feedback guys.

I did purchase a new mic recently. Not sure why my old one started to get wonky, but I think it was a combination of bad habits (I was keeping it too far away from me), bad settings (skype and I fight frequently) and that it is a stand mic picks up all of the sound from the room. It worked great for the purpose before as my gaming group is split across the state and we wanted a mic so that everyone at the table could be heard. For podcasting though, not so great. If you think the sound feels wonky in the future or you have some suggestions on how I can improve my end of things, shoot me a message on twitter at @xphile101361.

I'll agree that some of the first episodes we did are not the best. Both Ben and I were completely new to podcasting and were figuring out this dance of "how do we make this all work". Being a programmer, I created lists for talking points and tried to organize everything. For us, this doesn't work well. I spent too much time trying to get us "back on track" to where I thought we should be and not enough time engaging in the current conversation.

That being said, I think we've improved a lot. I know I've mentally changed the way I approach the show and now have a lot more fun with it. I hope that shows through in the episodes we've been recording. I think the free form discussions we have now lead to a lot more on the spot insights and cool ideas that just pop into our heads. If it still sounds like we're reading from a script, I can assure you that we aren't at all. Ben spends a ton of time editing each episode to improve the quality of it (and getting rid of my cursing).

So if you only listened to the first few episodes, jump into the middle and give it another listen. I know I've had a ton of fun making this show. Hopefully I've been able to give you guys a few cool ideas and insights along the way. I'm sadly not that active on the forums, but always feel free to hit me up on Twitter if you had a cool idea you want to talk about or a suggestion for a show topic.

For those of you who have been listening to the show this entire time, thanks! It is for all of you that we create this.
