Heavy Support Squadron

By captainfreeman1, in X-Wing

Just picked up a pair of Y-wings, and I'm looking to build a squadron where each pilot supports the others in some way or another. Here's what I've got so far.

"Dutch" Vander w/ R5-K6, Ion Cannon Turret

Garven Dreis w/ R5 Astromech

Kyle Katarn w/ Blaster Turret, Recon Specialist, Moldy Crow

Bandit Squadron Pilot

If you can think of any better upgrades than the one's I've got, or any weaknesses that this particular build has, let me know.

I love action sharing/ action economy, and "Dutch" Vander with Garven Dreis have been staples in many of my rebel builds. However I have a concern with the amount of firepower you will be able to dish out with this build.

Going Garvin, Dutch, and Cracken give you the same amount of action economy, but also leaves you with 27 points to add another heavy hitter.

R7-T1 on Dutch for TLs is a good idea.

I always enjoy flying "Dutch"/Garven/Kyle, and am really glad Bandits finally arrived to allow 4 ships in the build. The one small change I would make is dropping the R5 on Garven to change Kyle's turret to an Ion Cannon. As noted, the damage output of the build might be somewhat lacking, but I love the control of Ion Cannons, and with a second you get the potential to ionize large ships in a single turn. The other benefit is without Kyle having to spend so much Focus on attacking with his turret, he can pass them around more freely, and more easily save them for defense.

Jax and dark curse are your mortal enemies for this build.

I like the core garvin dutch build, but in a 100 point game you are sinking a lot into that list for the hawk, and since it is running a blaster turret it will likely use at least 2 focus tokens on it's own every turn it can shoot. I don't think kyle is worth it in a 100 point list when garvin does the same thing, costs less, and stat wise is better in every way (except the ability to take a turret, which you have to pay for.) I think there are a couple of better options.

1. Tarn Mison - gets TL for free

2. B-wing with FCS - again, gets target lock for free.

Arien cracken may be a good option as well.

Now, I do like the moldy crow in a 125 or 150 point game. If you want a blaster turret platform, I would suggest a cheap hawk with recon, as again, most of the time you are not going to have spare focus tokens to store, though it is nice going in with a few banked up I'll admit, and it's nice when someone gets blocked if you can chuck them a focus.
