Newbie Questions

By Cadu Carioca, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

Hello

Im noob Descent player, and after few quests some questions raised up:

1) Hellhound breath abilitie

Is breath abilitie mandatory? Or can OL make a normal attack (with hellhound, for instance) if position in dungeon makes a breath useless?

2) AoD question and OL power

We played a AoD quest yesterday. I didnt remember which quest was, but there a beast named monster in final room and some priests worshipping it. The OL player make this changes in rules:

a) The heroes choose a character from 3 options and they can discuss about the better party to go inside dungeon;
b) OL draws only one card per turn. In addition several spawn cards are took out from the deck, remaining five or six including some cards from expansion.
c) Breath abilitie attack only can made straigth foward hellhound position.

My friend said that house-rules are to makes OL less powerfull and the game faster.

What are you think?
In your opinion is OL (with all spawn cards and draws) too much strong, making heroes efforts something like a bad joke?

Thanks.

1) They changed it in the latest FAQ so that both Breath and Blast are not mandatory.

2a) I think the drawing 3 and choosing 1 option is fine. I do that all the time for vanilla Descent and its the norm for Road to Legend.

2b) I think only drawing 1 card a turn is a horrible idea since you are taking away a lot of the OL's options, and removing the spawn cards is an even worse idea IMO.

2c) This makes no sense, says it says in the rules that figures have 360 line of sight, so there isn't even a "straight forward" position for a monster or a hero.

From the sound of it, sounds like you are having because the OL is spawning alot so give this a try: Leave the hero selection like you have it. Leave all the cards in the OL deck. For spawning, use a rule that exists in RtL. There is a Reinforcement token that the OL has. So when the OL plays a spawn card, its flips over the token. He then has to pay 15 threat to flip it back over to be able to play another spawn card. For example, a 4 Threat spawn card now takes 19 threat to play. I know a number of people who have used this and had it work quite well.

If you don't have the reinforcement token, just use something in its place.

You are right and the issue was about too much monsters spawned every turn, and the cheap price to activate these cards. Thank you for fast reply and precious tips. Sure i will use it.

I thougth it was.

Definitely try using the Reinforcement marker system for now them. Once your groups gets more experience you can try playing without it and see. Also, you could get the Tomb of Ice expansion, which gives the Heroes access to Feats which will help balance it a little.

Also remember, even if you are not using the Reinforcement marker from RtL, the OL may only play 'one' spawn card each turn, no more (though if he does play one each turn, you'll still have a hard time).
