Barrel Rolling question

By Deadshane, in X-Wing Rules Questions

I have a feeling that this may be an FAQ question but I cannot find anything.

When you barrel roll, are you allowed to not overlap, but wind up touching an opposing figure so as not to get shot?

Seems like that is a collision to me...not allowed when barrel rolling, I'm not certain though.

FAQ, page 1: “A ship cannot perform a barrel roll if this would cause its base to overlap another ship or obstacle token, or if the maneuver template overlaps an obstacle token.”

If you're not overlapping, you can fire at each other as usual. Touching is not overlapping.

If you were able to complete the barrel roll, that means you were not overlapping, so it's open season. :)

Ahhhh, very good, thank you sir.

A friend of mine avoided a shot by me last time we played by doing this. I didn't think it was correct but we played it his way and I didn't fire....since I couldn't back up my point and didn't want to go into a 30min research mission on a simple 1-up game.

Bases in contact has no special rules associated with it. Bases touching as a result of a corrected overlap has special rules, and he could not have had this as it is against the barrel roll rules.

The "no shooting" condition is a result of overlapping. If there was no overlap then feel free to shoot.

This is a point where the various terms that get used probably confuse people.

"Touching" is the term used when an overlap has occurred. Otherwise the ships would be considered "adjacent" to each other. But it's a fine line between the two sometimes.
