Would anyone else buy x-wings that were not pre-painted? Assuming they were cheaper and easier to get (less demand).
Unpainted ships?
Nope, I definitely would not.
I would.. but I like to paint.
I would only end up buying one unpainted ship. I would take it home, get out my miniature paint, and start painting it. A few splotches later, I'd quickly realize why I prefer pre-painted ships...

Quoted for truth.
i started playing because I have 2 rules about miniatures games:
- It cannot use a regular ruler to move units and perform attacks, etc. X-Wing uses a minimal preset set of templates.
- Miniatures cannot be unpainted, they must be pre-painted. X-Wing minis are prepainted (much better than that other Heroclix-like game).
I have zero interest in painting my minis.
I might, but I would mostly go for prepainted. Because well I'm lazy.
no, even if Im repainting stuff, I dont always repaint the entire model, and would keep certain details as it is because it is too much work to paint it myself, eg. the face of a TIE
Compared to other miniature games X-Wing is very well priced.
Awesomely painted X-Wing is cheaper than unpainted and unassembled Games Workshop.
I would buy unpainted ships by the boatload. Hell, I would like them unassembled as well. Of course I'm a hobbyist and painter first, gamer second.

Buying gold is almost cheaper than GW
I would but I've been doing 40k for 20 years so I have plenty of experience with painting to a fairly high standard.
But people who haven't had that same level of experience could easily be put off, and it's nice to just take out a model and use it right away.
I would buy unpainted models but I would expect them to be cheaper. I don't mind painting my own models, and I even repainted about half of mine.
I wouldn't have the time to get into painting. Definitely prefer the pre-painted.

I used to play 40K and i frequently ran into... let's say unmotivated players...who didn't paint their minis. I believe one of the points to tabletop gaming is a visually interesting table. So here i sat with my nicely painted marines or Guardsmen and across from me sat an army that looked like all of them rolled around in grey mud. AARRGH...with pre-painted minis...I'm guaranteed an interesting table visually...and if my opponent goes and does a custom paint job..awesome.
Edited by SnowWulfI'm with Macross: unassembled, unpainted. Bring your pretty face to my brush!
I would
I would buy a few unpainted but prefer them pre painted, I would like to paint a few so it would be nice to start out with a ship that has no paint.
I've been painting minis for nearly 40 years, so unpainted would be fine by me. I think if FFG gave us the option of unpainted as well as painted, they would be able to satisfy both markets quite easily.
Gotta agree with SnowWulf here also. I get a bit tired of seeing the same guys at games with unpainted models because they're too damned lazy to paint them. We've got some guys locally that have been using the same unpainted figures for years now. For most games it's part of the hobby to paint the figures/models and it can really personalise a force. The only downside to prepainted minis (like X-Wing) is the generic look of everyone's ships. My X-wings look just like Steve's, and Mike's, and Paul's, and so on.
One thing I'd like to see, would be squadron decals that could be applied to the models.
I sort of like them pre-painted because then I don't have to play against unpainted models or models painted with such a minimalistic attitude it just aesthetically unpleasant.
However the acrylic paint FFG used is so easy to paint over many hobbyist don't even bother to strip the factory paint job. So I think they got the right balance, it is already painted so players don't have to paint them if they don't want to, and it is easy to re-paint without any complexities such as stripping or undercoating.
Edited by MarinealverSure, I might pick up some.
The thing is, re-painting is almost no different from painting a model from the very start. However something that does make a huge impact is the way the model is assembled. Often when doing re-paints I find small pieces of scrap, marks, scratches, leftover glue, mold lines and misaligned parts. It is irritating and can be very hard to do something about. This is the reason why I would want unassembled models.
I am a hobbyist as well and can paint a painted ship just as easy as an un painted one just saying....but yeah if they came un painted surly somebody would show up with some crappy looking paint job or worst a non-painted one. or is this a more of a hoping FFG would release unpainted miniatures for a fraction of the price of the painted ones??? still if they did the aforementioned things WOULD happen!!!
Yes it is an unfortunate reality that if FFG released unpainted and unassembled models plenty of cheap bastards would buy the unpainted version just to save a few bucks.
FFG does release unpainted models. Look at Descent and Imperial Assault. A friend of mine got into Descent and decided to paint the models and they came out great. Sure looked better than any of FFG's publicity shots.
