Could you.........? (...but would you want to?)

By SlaveofChrist, in Star Wars: Armada

Greetings to Fantasy Flight Games & the Armada Community!

I wanted to ask the opinion of you Armada fans & X-Wing Miniatures owners this. Could you have a battle with just squadrons only and no capital ships in Armada? Is it like X-Wings Miniatures in so far as a point system for "building" your fleet?

(...but would you want to?)

Well...part of the reason is that I want to kind of decide which way I want to go...X-Wings Miniatures or Armada? I ask about the squadron question to see how viable a replacement it would be for X-Wing Miniatures in just fighter battles when I don't feel like a longer Capital ship battle. It's also been said, that a picture says a thousand words...so...

My wife appreciated this too (cough, cough...he, he...) ;)

As I know, in armada, if you don't have capital ships your loose the game...

Do the Capital ships have to engage? Could they act as carriers for your fighter squadrons, staying in the rear?

Quote circa May 1983

His Imperial Majesty Palpatine instructed The Fleet High Command to this very tactic for the upcoming the Battle at Endor.

We outgun the Rebellion 10,000 to 1. We have a fully operational Death Star II. The Emperor Himself will be conducting the Order of Battle.

I trust it will all work well, what could possibly go wrong?

Adm Crunch....

...I agree with you!.... ...it makes it more like the battle of midway... send the aircraft way out front, and allow the capital ship to fall back....only con is when the covering aircraft are all gone...lol...

viele danke.

I'm presuming it won't offer the fighter battle detail you see in X-Wing. It will be abstracted, perhaps too abstracted to be satisfying? Capital ships are the stars of this game, Fighters are the filler.

That would be perfect if you want to run a fighter only game, and must have a Capital Ship on the board. If your fighter screen is shot down, your carrier is forced to retreat and you lose.

I have no doubt it will be heavily abstracted. Hopefully there will be enough meat in the starfighter portion to be challenging and interesting.

What the good Admiral said.

By "challenging and interesting" I hope to clarify that there are not wave after wave of A Wings ramming themselves on my command ships.

Thee best way to do a midway style battle IMO would be to have two tables. Each table has one side's capital ships and any squadrons allocated to defense along with the opposing force's attack squadrons.

The biggest problem would e explaining how the attack squadrons reach both forces at the same time without the capital ships being in position to easily close and engage. If there is ever a major wars in Star Wars where both sides use primarily hyperdrive equipped fighters it would be easy to justify but almost all full scale wars I can think of in Star Wars either involve both sides using primarily or exclusively sublight only fighters, or one side (the protagonists almost always) using primarily or exclusively hyper equipped fighters with the other side using either exclusively sublight fighters, or a few rare often either elite, or very specialized (Most often recon craft and sometimes strike bombers) hyper equipped fighters

The only wars I can think of which were exceptions were the Legacy comics era where both sides seemed to use hyper fighters, maybe the 2nd GCW era (The GA seemed to use a mix of hyper and subligt fighters, the Jedi Alliance exclusively hypers , and the Confederation uses a mix of sublight and hyper fighters but it seems like the sublights are more common from what we see.) I seriously doubt that either conflict will be touched by FFG.

I'm not sure if the common TOR era starfihters for either side are hyper equipped but if both sides use common hyper fighters then IMO that would make the most sense for a Midway style battle if FFG ever decides to do anything in that era.

Heere Rouge Corona...agree with all.

Heere Adm...capital ships have always been the stars....but ever since the second world war of the modern age, aircraft have been reducing the cost benefit of the battleship... ...and this is highlighted in star wars with the simple awing cascading the destruction of ssd... ...yes to abstract of fighters, but should they be too abstract?
