Cheaper than I thought it would be...
Yeah, I wonder if MM will be as cheap?
Yeah, MM is comparably priced. As of yesterday you had to search for Armada stuff. They didn't have it broken out like their X-Wing items yet.
What is really gutting is that I'm paying the same in £ as it costs in $ for the core set, and that's a $1.56 to the £ :-(
MM and CS Iare great for prices compared to Australia. What kills is the $100 postage charge from both.
Looks like its starting to come up on bookdepository though, no prices as yet.
Yeah, that is pretty competitive. I'll probably still get it from the FLGS. I just need to decide if I want to pre-order (15% off), with the danger that the game won't take off in my community.

I believe this is a very valid concern. I am one of a small group of people in my area that feel that this game will not do well. We believe this because of the price point of the game. Please do not misunderstand ... we are not saying that you won't get value for the price of the game ... it's just that it is significantly higher in comparison to X-Wing and other mini games.
The base game and expansions are going to naturally be far more expensive as it is a Capital Ship game. I just can't see younger people, with far less disposable income, going to be able to invest the dollars that this game will require. Combine that with the fact that many of the individuals that are prospective buyers of this game already have significant investments in X-Wing, and I think it limits the pool even farther.
My group and I are taking a "wait and see" attitude. Of course, if many others do like we are doing, this will exacerbate the issue even further.

So, what we're facing is a form of collective action problem. If everybody is going to wait and see if the others in their community are going to buy in, then no one will be the first, and therefore it won't happen at all.
The solution to this sort of problem is communication. My community has a Facebook page, so I think I'll poll on there to see what people's intentions are. Do you have a similar medium?

I think your synopsis of what will happen is dead on. Other than game forums such as this one, I choose not to participate in social media platforms because of past privacy issues.
I do, however, have very strong connections with my local FLGS and the owner of the store. They do an exceptional job of promoting X-Wing, gathering us all together, hosting multiple casual and formal play events, etc. It helps that the owner of the FLGS and his wife are heavily involved in, and interested in X-Wing.
I think my best approach is to discuss this issue with him, and strategize on approaches for Armada. Unfortunately, it still leaves us with the issue that the price point of this game (requiring significant disposable income) will have a negative impact on those efforts.

Understandable. If there is a Facebook group in your area that you're just not a member of, I wonder if you could have a friend post the suggestion on your behalf.

That's cool. My FLGSs tend to leave the X-Winging to the community to self-organize, with them giving us ample space and a slot on their calendar to do so. So, while I'm certainly grateful for that, it sounds like you've got the preferable set-up.

Yes, that's unavoidable. It also looks like it will take significant investment even beyond the core set, if 300 points is the target fleet size. I do trust that FFG has done solid market research on this, so hopefully they've produced a game that's worth the buy-in, when X-Wing will be a competing cheaper product.
Preliminary Polling results
In my X-Wing community's Facebook page, I am doing a poll. Currently just under half (9/19) are going to wait and see. 4/19 are definitely getting it; another 4/19 are definitely not getting it, and 2/19 will be playing with other people's collections. In other words, FFG still has a lot of convincing to do.
Edited by Mikael HasselsteinI'm not familiar with CSI, how long are those prices likely to be up?

Oh, you don't have to worry about younger people that much. When I enter virtually any Games Workshop, home the most expensive miniature game out there, I regularly see young kids. Parents these days seem to enjoy and encourage their kids playing a game that doesn't involve consoles or PC's.
The "I already play X-wing, so why should I play Armada?" camp seems to be a bigger issue at the moment.
