The Deep Realms Expansion
I don't think you can fit anything in the very small gaps between City and Highlands.
Who knows... perhaps a narrow storm river on which you can travel one space at a time on with a raft, ending in an underground cavern leading to the dungeon, chasm or another space. Or perhaps an island with some kind of portal. Then again, maybe no.
Nice to hear Jon got another go at an expansion. After nether realm it was well deserved.
A few weeks ago someone posted about a Storm River expansion and I could see this happening in a PoD format.
I would like the mini-board between Highland and Woodland to be "The Haunted Realm" because it also sets up towards the Graveyard area. More zombies and undead, Witches and Vampires, and treasures of course.
Haunted Realm sounds good. Another Bridge (Will it use the Bridge deck?) And The Toad God's Pond. +????
I dunno about something for those other gaps, too small. It's fun to imagine something going there, just like it's fun to imagine Timescape is making a comeback
Eagerly waiting for any previews (countdown) with more info on this expansion from FFG or Talisman Island website.
This is something that was discussed in great length years ago on this forum, "What to do with the empty space between corner board" and goes back to the time of 3rd edition that first introduce corner board to the world of Talisman.
I do have mixed feeling about this though, I sincerely wish this expansion to be an outstanding success for FFG and Jon New,
but if this expansion is any indication, we might get 3 more set of 2 boardlet realm to cross between the other corners which may spell doom for the idea of having sea expansion full of pirate, sea creatures and islands full of treasure connected to the main talisman board via the space available between corners.
Unconnected expansion-type like in 2nd edition would work well for something like Timescape but I don't see it working well for an sea expansion, Pouf!!! suddenly your not in the realm of Talisman but in the middle of an ocean??
Unless I'm mistaken, with all 4 space used between corner board, the only logical place to connect a sea realm would be from the wharf on the city board, and I do hope that after 5 POD expansion, Jon New get a shot at a big box sea expansion from the wharf space.
One of the island in the sea expansion could be called Talisman
Cheers
I hear what you're saying and feel the jury is out, currently. Anything can happen.
After reading the silly post about Sharks (it was fun to read, but silly), I think exploring the Storm River may be as close to water adventures we will get. But it doesn't need to be all bad.
Talisman is a land of potential. Nothing is ever really taken for granted. I envision an Expansion for the Storm River that takes on the idea that the river could be a lot wider than we realize. Wide enough to have small island on it even. 1 shore of each of the four corner spaces, is a dock for river boats. I'm going to say The Village, The Chapel, the Temple and the Warlock's Cave are these dock locations. Since the Tavern already has a dedicated ferry across to the Temple we don't need one there. Likewise with the City should not get a dock, since the wharf services to any spot along the middle and outer regions. I know, not everyone has the City expansion, but I would like the docks balanced 2 on the outer and 2 on the middle region spaces.
Anyone boarding a boat at said docks will be taking a longer trip around the river - since its so much larger than we know. In between each dock/corner, there would be a card or "board-ish" that has 3 spaces between each corner. You move 1 space at a time, and draw from a "River" deck, which can have treasures, sea-peoples, dragons, etc. When you arrive, finally, at a dock, you can either stay on the boat and move on to the next track of 3 spaces on your next turn, or you get off at that space and encounter.
There should absolutely be 3 / more new characters, with water themes or abilities. Alt endings; perhaps there is a card/encounter representing a hidden lake, channel that can take you up to the middle region? The boats, can be plastic pieces or new tokens. Probably should have at least 2 for the board.
Talisman is a unique game because when a new expansion comes out, everybody starts wondering what would be next.
I don't know what's in store for us, but I sincerely hope FFG can make a sea-themed expansion. A separate board would be necessary, but I don't know how big. It all depends on the mechanics required. The problem of the connection to the main board could be solved by using cards that are placed faceup on non-draw card spaces (e.g. City, Village, Tavern, Chapel) and add a harbour to them, where you can take a ship to the Sea Region. The expansion could accomodate cards to use with the corners, thus giving an access to the Sea also from there (e.g. from Wharf, Waterfall, Guard Room, Swampland).
The same system could be used to create access gates to a Timescape-sque board from all Regions, instead of relying on a handful of cards in a huge Adventure deck, on random rolls at the Mystic and Warlock's Cave, or on tweaks applied to previous Endings (Horrible Black Void).
I don't remember where I posted it, but I'll say it again. You can emulate the effects of an ocean with a simple deck for it, and Ship counters (Maybe with two sides, one for sailing condition and one for wrecked) that sits under your character and moves with it. Once you acquire one of these ship tokens (How? I do not know, maybe the ships are placed on certain spots at the beginning of the game and then bought with gold), you can now move on the perimeter of the Outer Region + expansion boards and draw from the Maelstrom deck. Cards that remain in play such as strangers and places can just be slid under the side of the board to which space you were bordering when it was drawn. You could effectively play this expansion with or without the other expansions.
Much agreed though, before we either move onto a new edition or start making the table even bigger. One Ocean expansion please.
And while only a personal request, I think it should be made official in the little lore we get, that Talisman is, in fact an island and not so much a landlocked continent, ever expanding. It always gave me the feeling it was surrounded by water, a magical place mostly uncharted, with very little politics, war or human civilization /corruption.
I was looking at the preview/news when "The Nether Realm" came out and it looks like there was only preview. Bam, it was there.
I thought I had read one, and then another when it was actually out - does anyone remember if that is so?
I guess Talisman land could be on an island; I never thought about this before. I would be content with a river expansion if it had a healthy mix of watery menace and mystery.
I'm wondering if you have to encounter the bridge spaces or if you can just skip right through it if you roll a 3+ for movement.
Hello Oberon,
LOL, This bring back memories of endless arguments with a homemade expansion we did for 2nd edition for crossing or navigating the river between the middle and outer region, the main argument concern the fact that border of space on the middle and outer region were not facing in a straight line and some player were arguing that you could choose which space you land on if the outer space would be touching a middle space 90%, 10%.
The river would be overlay with a paper with spaces that would follow the space of outer and middle region (some line would be crooked) and a player would have to lose 1 turn to board a boat or get out. Player on the river would move 1 space per turn and pick 2 adventure card on each space. We house rule to discard the cards pick on the river after the fountain of wisdom was left in the middle of the river for half the game.
I don't know about the 3 space between docks, I would have to try it first
The boats would have to be big enough to put the mini in in case there's a lot of traffic on the river.
As for the sea expansion, I still hope we do get an official one connect to the wharf that would be more than 2 space.
Also, after enjoying the neither realm expansion and remembering the way Jon New felt about an ocean/sea expansion many post ago, I would like to see him have a hand at making a big box ocean/sea expansion for Talisman.
But you know, a sea/ocean expansion doesn't mean we shouldn't have a river expansion as well
As you can see, from my point of view the land of Talisman is never going to be big enough.
Cheers
I've been playing Talisman for as long as I can remember. A big game with lots of expansions, lots of characters, lots of cards is fun.
But there comes a point in time when enough is enough. I currently own every expansion (except the Nether Realm). Honestly, it's a bit much as it is. I usually wind up forgetting about the Werewolf and the Reaper.
So, I'm going to pass on this and all such expansions that come in the future. I have more than enough game to satisfy me as it is.
OTOH, if you get all of this up and running for the digital version, then we can talk.
Yes, I understand quite well that for some player it is not necessary to have or to play with all expansion. But as old veteran Talisman player from the 80's I've played with my fair share of various type of players and let me tell you that some will, for example, like the dungeon but despise timescape while other it's the reverse.
You will find that it fun to be able to customize the game to your own taste and those of you friends, and you will discover that the more players are involved in one game, the more expansion you can expect to use.
You are probably not alone with the sentiment that it's a bit much right now, but don't be surprise if one day you buy an expansion more to your taste with a theme you will enjoy.
Btw, I also have all 4re expansion, own a complete copy of the 3rd edition and the black industry 4 edition. I sold my complete, minus dragon, 2nd edition a long time ago at a flea market, it was in a sorry shape after so many years of gaming
Cheers
I think Talisman expansions should keep coming for as long as possible!
- Talisman is such a modular game that any combination of expansions will work. Reaper can be your first and only expansion, or Woodland can be. The number of currently existing expansions is irrelevant, only that you buy the ones you enjoy. Any combination of expansions is compatible.
- You don't have to play with all the expansions at once! You can own all of them, and use only your favorites. You can also even roll a die: 1-3 the expansion is out, and 4-6 it's in. Change up your game every time!
- You can play with all the expansions at once if you want!
I'd like to see more content as long as people will keep buying it. Don't stop till sales drop!
(And I trust the Talisman community won't let that happen for a long time!)
If they keep making them, they will get my money. But as far as adding new regions and board spaces goes, I want to see them connected on the table. Deep Realms and "Haunted Realms" to come kind of seals up the map (and table space) in those respects.
Adventure deck and spell deck is pretty bloated too. (I suppose that's not the end of the world however.)
I really feel like maybe one more small box (Sea/Ocean/Nautical) and a couple of pods with creative thinking outside the format-box elements is what we have left.
Some ideas:
1.)Sea expansion everyone seems to want before the adventure kraken pulls the Talisman Island under for a new edition.
2.) Dueling Deck. AKA PVP POD. Same components as Neither Realm POD. 3 alt endings, 36 cards you can pull when encountering another player for various effects. "No magic this duel" "Duel to the death" etc.
3.) Some kind of send off box for the fans. Maybe with a card/character design contest for the fans to be included in the final box. Official alternate rules to polish off some of the more debated topics. (City prices, gripe/like xyz.) a cool little book with pictures of the developers and their comments on design and the fans, just a for the fans final box. Previews of the new edition to come, etc.
4.) Character packs. Though I think the miniatures may be the most expensive component in the boxes.
Then again....FFG is STILL putting out expansions for A Game of Thrones LCG, despite having 4-5 Red Viper cards. It is just NOW getting a new edition
So they do not wipe the board very often, so to speak.
Considering how cool the last few expansions have been, I am sure whatever is next will blow me away. As for my musings...
I would like to see the next large expansion focus on Talismans. Despite being the namesake of the game, they often go underappreciated.
Recent expansions have new types of Talismans, which I think is great, but they're never the focus.
As much as I'd like to see a sea expansion, the board is already quite big. If I had to pick a new place for a board, it would be another Inner Region overlay. This is because...
1. A new Inner Region can still be used with the Dragon expansion instead of the Dragon board. This is because while the board requires the Dragon components, the converse is not true: the Dragon components don't require the board. In fact, the Dragon rules quite clearly state that the Dragon board is in fact optional. You could play with the standard Dragon ending without the board (or a different Inner Region board) and still be fine.
2. A Talisman-themed expansion, such as the Great Talisman Region or whatever, would be fitting in the Inner Region.
However, I would have one request: I would prefer if none of the components, including a board, refer to endings! That was a big problem with the Dragon expansion. Its entire rulebook, components, and board referred to an (alternative) boss ending. In my view, endings can reference components, but
components
(and boards) should never reference
endings
.
So if we were to have a new Inner Region, one that can be played with the standard Crown of Command ending (and by extension, all endings), I think that will be fine. Perhaps fitting if it were to be the "last" expansion..
Just to let people know, in time-honoured tradition, I have a few pieces of artwork to spoil over the next few weeks.
Depending on other things of interest that might appear in the mean time, I'll be looking at posting them on each Friday or Saturday, starting this weekend.
I could see an alternate ending contest but not a character contest.
And I still want a deluxe game made which comes with the main board and 4 corners but smaller. The spaces the size of the cards.
I am also up for a new Inner region, tho I have seen others opposed to it.
Hmm, how hard would it be to replace a middle region? I can't see replacing the outer region as too many expansions require the spaces there.
Edited by DomaGBEh? What is this "Haunted Realm" you wrote of? How do you know it is coming?
Oh I just idea-things. I felt if a mini/boardlet ~ "board-ish" expansion would also connect Highland and Woodland, it could take advantage of its proximity to the Graveyard.
So, in the style of Deep Realms, there would be spaces representing a bridge *and* a tunnel, The Haunted Realm would have a catacombs of underground graves - An Ancient Cemetary.
Sorta means you have to tie it also into Blood Moon, since the Night thing would be very welcome I think.
Not an expansion unless someone else designs it!
Any ideas on a release date?
More than likely late January to February.
In upcoming tab it said 4th quarter 2014, so *it should* be by Christmas, I would think.
Also, today may be the day that Jon will preview more artwork from the release, so I'm watching for that.
BGG has The Deep Realms with a Published Year of "2015"
I hope they have that wrong!
