History and You - List of Conflicts

By MorbidDon, in Rogue Trader Gamemasters

In order to be better grounded in the "canon" of the 40k Universe one has to wonder is there a list of all the Wars and local enagements that have occured on the larger scale for 40k...

When creating characters and trying to marry them to such evetns it can become hard to do all the research while trying to maintain "quality standard" of the canon.

I would like to generate a spreadsheet of all the conflicts worth mentioning from both the Codexs and Novels with a column for Date, Location, and between whom exactly.

Any help on this would be greatly appeciated - I am willing to work on this collectively if there is community interest

Yeah I can tell you right now this is going to be a community project. The tagline of the setting including the line "There is only War" is not one that is idly assigned. There have been a lot of conflicts. Technically the Imperium was founded with the message of "We are declaring war on everything that is not us", so everything falls under the 10,000 year umbrella of those ideals.

Are you looking for individual battles within worlds? For example would the Damocles Gulf Crusade get mentioned as a single conflict, or did you want it broken down into battles of Garrus and Kleist, then Hydrass, then Sy'l'kell and so on?

Narrow it down to Segmentum Obscurus and the 39-41st millenia, at least at first.

use a background package from dark heresy instead, you don't want to go down that path of listing all conflicts

If you only want a background for your character, then almost any conflict should work - though the earlier the better. Thanks to the bureaucracy of the Administratum, you can send an Imperial regiment from one side of the galaxy to another just because an untrained bureaucrat saw the words "Regiment Unassigned" and took steps to correct that. Any Xenos force could have invaded the planet, or one like it and had the refugees from that system settle in yours as part of a relief.

If you screw up parts of the canon, which all of us do, just adopt the Black Library approach as the in-universe approach. Someone else in your setting either misreported or straight up fabricated the history, and it was accidentally accepted as Imperial fact. Your character could even uncover than and be left with the choice to either do what's right and report the lie, or else keep the glory of his fabricated heritage and try to ignore the gnawing truth that the events he believed in never existed.

Since there are sooooo many, it shouldn't be hard to just make one up. It's not like the Imperium even knows all the wars it's fought in, let alone battles. Frankly, I get a bit bored when a player draws up a canon source. Give me a player with the imagination to come up with their own background setting any day.

You mean every Imperial Guard solder didn't fight in the third war of Armageddon?

So far since staring my campaign - Ive done it the way Errant Knight suggestions, using random word generators, biblical names, and mythological names to come up with "made up conflicts"

Here's the fluff I generated (as an example) for our Group's NPC Rogue Trader:

Lord-Captain Malvanius Raphael Aesttaban is originally from the Gothic Sector, born of war …

Malvanius was voidborn in the black gulfs of the Gothic Sector in Gethsemane on the worldship Zarmarus; his family during the Myccof Engagement supported the Imperium as short ranged couriers in the subsector, he is their 4th child and 3rd son. The Tauandian Aesttabans were descended from minor nobility of recent origin, who had come to Gethsemane from the Port Maw Sub-sector several centuries past.

He was captured, at age 13, and mistreated by his captors - not much is known until a few years later when at 17 he later became a Legate, upon graduating, Aesttaban was commissioned as a ensign on the Haahashtari naval vessel, and in several years he was in Bronea and helped found the coloney of Chevesic. He served on garrison duty on the Vaniah and the Absolom until after the outbreak of the Xanpon, and took nearly two years' leave in Astauand and Ociramma during this period. A fervent Tauandian nationalist, Aesttaban wrote to the Tauandian leader Augustin Defas.

He spent the early years of the Xanpon in Astauand, fighting in a complex three-way struggle among royalists, revolutionaries, and Tauandian nationalists. He supported the revolutionary Qerrassa faction, gained the rank of commander in the Tauandian militia, and gained command over a battalion of volunteers. Despite exceeding his leave of absence and leading a riot against a loyalist faction army in Astauand, he was promoted to captain in the navy hence after.

He returned to Astauand and came into conflict with Defas, who had decided to split with local sectarians and sabotage the oncming assault on the Nalpurian world of Noxu, where Aesttaban was one of the expedition leaders. Aesttaban and his family fled to the Port Maw Sub-sector because of the split with Defas.

Malvanius was elected to the Imperial Vikomt, and then to Voivode some four years later. Five years from that appointment, Malvanius was elevated to Marshal to the various local planetary forces (as needed), which became his political as well as military base of power. During this later period Aesttaban would prove to be both an asset and a threat to local rule after the Battle of Hexteria near the Cyclops Cluster . Imperial records are scant to non-existant as to the exact nature of what occured then but the resulting action resulted in the High Lords themselves summoning Aesttaban to Terra...

Lord-Captain Malvanius is granted by the High Lords of Terra a Warrant of Trade – 809.M41

The next several years he travels from Holy Terra outward to the Koronus Expanse as detailed by his Warrant.

During which time the “Endless Way” ploughs the void picking up three very important individuals; Remington, Maximillion, and Alessender.

NOTE: This NPC is an analog of Andrew Jackson + Napoleon + Tommy Shelby (Pinky Blinders) ~ GO FIGURE LOL
