Marking numbers on Templates

By bubblepopmei, in X-Wing

My Applied Perspective order has arrived. I'm so excited.

I think I shall paint the numbers on the pink movement templates purple, and on the purple range templates, pink.

I was going to use nail polish, but it sounds like it will chip off. I have no budget for paint and brushes.

How about sharpie? I have 16 colours.

You could always go old school and use crayon.

You might try asking around at your LGS and see if you can find a painter willing to help you out. The amount of paint used for that should be trivial. Look for a Chaos player, they tend to have a lot of use for pink and purple, although pink at least is a surprisingly core color (tinting for flesh tones).

I bought a paint marker from Walmart for like $2 worked great.

or check out your local hobby store small bottle of paint and a GOOD brush should be less than a cappuccino at Starbucks. or perhaps just slightly more... leave the protective paper ON them before painting!!!

Yeah that's precisely the issue. I want to leave the wrap on until I've marked them, but I'm not in a position to wait on random kindness of painters before I break down and eagerly tear off the wrapping and enjoy the new templates.

Perfection is a finished product, not a flawless one.

I didn't... But I didn't plan on painting mine when I got them either. But even with the cover sheet removed, the paint marker I got had a find enough tip that I wasn't too messy. Wiped off the excess with a paper towel before it dried and it turned out great.

But if you haven't removed it yet, it's way easier if you leave it on.

That's basically what I wanted to say. Or, better yet, a friend rather than a random from the FLGS. I always assume X-Wingers know at least one person with a stock of GW paints!

Honestly...dont use nail polish for anything other than your nails.

its totally going to screw up gaming pieces as its clumpy crude stuff.

Acrylic paints will be like UK GBP £1 a pot on ebay. If you spend the money on fancy templates spend £2 on some white and pink paint. Paint it on with white...paper towel off the excess quickly so its only in the recesses. When its dry do it again with the pink.

You'll get a much sharper brighter pink on a white undercoat.

Less than $10 invested in white, black, red and blue acrylic paint and a decent 00 or 000 brush will be money well spent for sprucing up or customising your ships.

You can even use acrylic paint as make up :)

The black and silver in my haloween terminator look were all acrylics. the burnt skin is acrylic 'flesh' mixed with toilet paper and the seared blood is acrylic red ink :)

handy stuff to have around because if you mess up you can wash it off with water.

if you have a games workshop store near you they do free painting tutorials... use the fact they will be astounded to see a woman in store to ask them to help you with the templates :)

If it has the protective paper, you could just use spray paint. Just mask off the edges.

Good call ^^^^

(ran out of likes)

If you were in the Uk i'd say post them to me, i'll do decent job on them for you and post em back but to canada and back it would be cheaper to buy the paint yourself :(

If I were to use sharpie now and decide later that if was insufficient, I could get one of the paint markers Vanor referred to and go over the numbers again, rift?

Paint marker could work fine. Also chalkboard type marker might work and then you could use clear nail varnish to seal it in if you felt it needed it?

I'd still say spend a dollar or two on some acrylic white paint tbh but if you're keen to do it quick then I'd just see if any local gamer/painter/modeller would do it for you.

Do you have a gaming store round your way. its such a 30 second job that im sure most people would do it for you with the right materials for free.

and go over the numbers again, rift?

I'd think so. Those are paint not whatever is in a marker, it's basically acrylic paint, so it should cover anything. It would only be an issue if you used a very dark color marker and a light color paint. Like black marker and white paint.

I run a weekly xwing night at a FLGS. I'm just trying to be cost effective and self sufficient. Also I'm impatient. ^___^

Definitely post pictures when you are done! :)

Nail polish should be fine if you can thin it down a little bit. AP's templates have recessed numbers so chipping shouldn't be much of a problem.

It looks like the numbers might be obvious enough to not require marking. I'm at my daughter birthday party but once home I'll do a video.

Paint pen or crayon are your best and also cheap/easy solutions.

I did a test on my 2 range purple translucent template. I will do a video from home but wanted to show this.

The templates are thirsty. Several coats of sharpie are required. I'm not sure if this will be more or less obvious numbering on the template.

I will test one movement and then do then do the video from home.

The film takes a long time to get off. The video will be silly. Here's the finished product on two templates.
