Class suggestion?

By Alarmed, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

Our group is starting a Nerekhall campaign tonight, and i was looking for suggestions for class.

I'm choosing to play a scout and I think I've settled on TInashi. Can anyone tell me what class is best for her? more importantly, why it's best for her.

Right now, I'm thinking about going wildlander, but I'm not welded to that idea, yet.

Thanks!

The Treasure Hunter is generally considered to be the best scout class. Its kinda OP really.

In a 4-hero game I would definitely recommend it, as the amount of gold and items that the TH contributes to the team makes the entire party significantly better.

In a smaller party I think the Wildlander is a great choice. It complements Tinashi's mobility nicely. She'll also be capable of going through Portcullis, and there are a few quests where this is very useful!

The other two scouts I personally like are the Bounty Hunter and Shadow Walker. The Shadow Walker I mostly like cause its fun and flavorful. However, it suffers a bit from the Stalker's problems in that it takes setup, positioning, and sticking with the party to maximize its potential. That means you're not being 'scouty' and rushing off to get the treasure/objectives, and a clever overlord can work around your soul.

Bounty Hunter gets an awesome starting weapon and great sniping options with Long Shot. Evil Eye is really strong in certain quests to harass key monsters too. All you have to do is see them once and for the rest of the quest they'll be suffering, even if they're halfway across the map.

I faced a Tinashi Shadow Walker in Nerekhall recently- it was a pretty good combination. Tinashi doesn't lend herself particularly to any of of the Scout classes more than the others- she has a high health and a hero ability that suggest she should be a fighter, perhaps not staying back as a wildlander or thief would. The shadow soul helps her do damage, and she recovers fatigue when she defeats a monster- that's very nice.

Our group has a rule that we don't repeat class/heroes. I'm not sure if that applies per player or overall but someone has already played the TH in our last campaign so I was looking to stay away from that class.

I had looked at the other scout classes and the Thief seemed to me mostly an underpowered TH (For example, the skill that lets you draw a second treasure, but you have to discard the first draw vs the TH skill that allows you to draw 2 cards every draw, choose the best one and place the other one on the bottom or top of the deck... hmmm... tough choice  )

I was thinking Wildlander to get some OL deck control, since another player stated he was thinking of using a Marshall but I'm also intirgued by the Shadow walker. Your insights will help me choose the one that will be the most fun.

I agree with Zaltyre in that Tinashi is a tougher-than-normal scout, and can thus be played aggressively on the front lines. Given that, I think a Shadow Walker might actually suit her better than a Wildlander, *if* you're playing with a full 4-hero team. I think the Shadow Walker's power diminishes the fewer party members you have, as that is less people taking advantage of the soul's buffs.

Either way you won't be great at picking up treasure, so I recommend picking up Dark Servant asap. It can save a lot of wasted movement running into corners to grab the tokens, and then you can immediately place a new soul by attacking the next monster.

As for the Wildlander's "Danger Sense".. it is nice. But its also stamina and action heavy.. Tinashi gets stamina recovery to make up for that, but I still find it a little tough to use it all that much if the OL is applying enough time pressure (which they should be). The Marshall by herself is more than capable of making the OL miserable when it comes to their cards :P

I would HIGHLY recommend you to take Shadow Walker in Nerekhall (not especially with Tinashi by the way) !

It's a lot of fun when you see that many of the quests are determined with a search action who is often far away or behind obstacle. With a Shadow Walker, you can take them from far and still be with your mates, then go away right to the next quest's objective and win the encounter easily.

We reversed lots of quest in our campaign only with this class, who's nearly cheated in Nerekhall to my mind ;)

(Obivously, the Treasure Hunter is even better, but this class is out of consideration since you don't even need to be good and to win quests in order to stuff your team and **** the Overlord...)

I'll point out, along with Kyarn, that Tinashi is actually quite useful in some Nerekhall quests as well- there are times when teleporting through a portcullis to pull a lever is just what the party needs (though Tomble could do that too.)

Yeah TInashi/Tomble can work pretty well too for the same purpose.

But I don't like Tinashi that much cause she doesn't really synergize with any class or hero to me. She have great stats, good passive, good heroic feat, but nothing "that" strong, and nothing to play with the team. It's brute force...and I don't like it (though it's pretty effective :P )

Tinashi's value is more apparent in a smaller party of heroes- don't have room to bring a scout AND a warrior? Bring Tinashi.

Yeah, I see your point and totally agree with it : in a 2 heroes campaign, you can almost rely only on yourself. This make her a pretty strong pick.

I 100% agree with Charmy that the Treasure Hunter is overpowered. Unless there's a large experience gap between the heroes and the overlord, the TH upsets the game balance way too much.

I've become a fan of the Wildlander recently, and it seems that skills like Fleet of Foot and First Strike synergize well with Tinashi's hero ability.

We're at the interlude now, and things aren't going so well for the heroes.

Tinashi herself, though, is rocking it. You know your character is tough when everyone else is down, you've got the highest body count, the highest treasure count and ALL the OL's monsters are turning to you.

What class was picked for Tinashi?

I picked the Shadow Walker. It's working out well for me, so far, allowing me to do some long range searching and allowing me to put the fear of my shadow soul into the OL.

We almost killed his Watchman Master Changeling. Had it down to 2 HP when he finally took me down (under a pile-on of Raven, Changelings and Wraiths)

I've traded her axe for a bow (Bow of bone) this allows me to get some more range and, when i don't move, more damage. I've got the skill that allows me to add a green die to an attack targetting a monster under or adjacent to my shadow soul, so an attack at blue, yellow, green green can really hurt. But, apparently, not enough.

You know your character and build are solid when you manage to kill both of the OL's giants, alone and only take 4 damage, collecting treasures all the way.
