I may well do
Im not anti ST at all, i'll watch it if its on. I just dont have an interest over a casual interest in it.
Whereas you know, i love star wars enough to spend about $900 making a film replica tie pilot outfit... i'm a bit biased ![]()

Now if you are interested in a spoof of ST, I highly recommend Galaxy Quest.
I like Star Wars more because of a lot of reasons. The books are some of the best books, let alone sci-fi books, I've ever read. The Mandalorians are very interesting to me. Also I think the ships look a lot cooler. The Clone Army has always been very awesome. I think the characters are more believable and act how they would in real life. But one of the main things I like about it is how diverse it is. With all the different books and games and movies and comics and shows, there's so many different styles and types. 40K is a close second though.
40k got more diverse... once they got away from every world being made out of ruined l shaped corners of gothic cathedrals ![]()
Only joking, yeah i think the Black Library novels really opened up the 40k universe.
I've seen galaxy quest, its pretty funny. Its the film where a tv show crew are warped into a nother universe to solve a problem by aliens who thought they were real yeah?
Laser Swords...
And Magic...
And uh Starfighters...the kind that shoot lasers...and some how have engine sounds in space...
And really big Starships and Space stations, that go boom...
And Laser Swords that can block Lasers...
And mystical powers...
And chicks wearing Slave Girl outfits...
And a Pony...And that's what I want for Christmas Santa! <(^-^)>
To me it was the style. Star Trek was too spandex and I suppose older than me, when i was born/young in the 80s (i was born in 81) Star wars was fresh, had an awesome toy line - the uniforms were top notch. Also Lightsabres. The OT of star wars also had a grimy overlay to it that the PT lacked but more on that later, when 93 rolled around we had X-wing, then TIE Fighter, then Dark Forces - the list of truly amazing star wars media continued until the prequels. Not to mention the books - The thrawn trilogy and the x-wing series to name but a few.
The prequels killed Star Wars for me, oh sure I bought forcefx lightsabres, played galaxies and the quake 3 engine based jedi knight games but it wasn't the same, at least for a time. I moved to 40K until the beginning of this year when I played this very game. Then, to quote Celine Dion - it's all coming back to me. 40K bit the big one for me with 7th ed, X-wing is amazing, i went and reinstalled TIE Fighter, I'm putting a TIE pilot uniform together for con's etc, the new movies might even be good.
The problem with the prequels is that everything was too clean and shiny, It felt out of place. Disjointed. CGI was too early a technology to be used and had the prequels came out today.... maybe they would have been better.
I guess we also all imagined Anakins fall and the clone wars to be very different.
I loved the starfighter and ship designs that came out of EP2 and 3. - Notably the ARC, LAAT and Acclamator.
I love Sci FI. I love the 40K universe, I enjoy Star trek, B5 Halo and BSG. But Star Wars to me is beyond just entertainment. It's the very spirit of my childhood - there is a reason I watch it now with my kids afterall.
Sure there is some crap in the EU and the prequels - the yuuzan vong being a worse mistake than the prequels ever were, but look at the greater whole. Look at what Star Wars means to you.
Edit: I reference Space Above and Beyond as part of my inspiration for the 128th Recon Wing project. Pilots who are also marines.
Edited by DariusAPBExactly the Star Trek utopia always looked very fake and lame to me.
There's a reason for that. Gene honestly believed that technology would make everything better, and once tech advanced far enough, humanity would reach a natural utopia where all needs are met and leave people free to advance as a person morally, ethically, spiritually, grammatically
...
So that's why it's the way it is.
Star Gate SG1 and Atlantis are two of my favorite series. It had in a way a lot of what made Star Trek good. Action, Adventure, characters you cared about... It was also somewhat cheesy but intentionally that way and I enjoyed the humor a great deal.
Me.. I love the ships. The whole Jedi, Sith, Empire vs Rebels was just a bonus. When I was exposed to SW as a kid, back then it was really all about the Xwings, Ties. I just fell in love with the Xwing and Falcon when I first saw them.

One of the reasons I prefer SW and B5 over ST is because of that utopian attitude. It always rang false to me.
I did enjoy the Star trek MMO, but wanted it to go further.
Banks has a resource rich eutopia where you *can* spend your life drinking champagne in a gold plated jacuzzi on mind bending drugs all day everyday if you wanted to...
but they still have the wars, intrigue and powerplays as you can give people everything in the world but they will still want to be in control.
Its why banks eutopia is beleivable and rodenberrys isnt. Because Banks has 'minds' that stop people doing the 'bad' things with his version of restraining bolts 'guardian drones' that intervene is someone prone to evil deeds tries to.
But even banks culture feel lived in, ST doesnt, it looks like a film set, cos it is.
I've been on warships and the ships in SW *look* like battlecruisers might be in the future. ST looks like a holiday resort. ![]()
edit: for those who dont know Banks 'culture' novels. Minds are hypr fast and inteliigent AI that run worlds, starships, orbitals etc. Two ships ran by minds could have a full on battle in the blink of an eye with only the winner left standing. They have human crew only because the humans want to be part of the 'navy' as such.
Edited by GadgeAlso, even if I didn't like SW very much, Republic Commando (game and books) and The Thrawn Trilogy would be enough to make it awesome IMO.

For me it was the TIE's and Y-wing. One of my favourite toys growing up was actually a Y-wing. I also had a DIE cast Stardestroyer. I always preferred the Imperial kit, but then I always preferred Decepticons, Cobra, Chaos Marines and Shadows...
Ditto for Y wings
all my mates had X wings, my parents bought me a Y wing for christmas one year... at first i was a bit like 'oh its not an xwing' but then i quickly loved it as it was a great toy, loads of features and with R5D4 in the back was different to everyone elses space ships.
Y winsg have been a fave ever since... partly why i feel a little dissapointed the FFG one is a little 'flat' in the cockpit.
Star Trek promotes civil advancement and human potential.
Star Wars is Rebels fighting wars with hot rods that serve the human need when called for, against a conformist regime with strict behavior principles and a complete disregard for the joy of life. Also, in the backdrop, for those more serious, there is this metaphysical Force that regards your intent to grow beyond the more basic role in life, introduces you to scarier secrets, and leads you to a position of much greater impact. (I liked episodes 4-6 more, can you tell?)
Don't get me wrong, I like both and each have their place.
Edited by PygonAnyone else like Blakes 7
it was very low budget with some awful costume, effects and sets but some of the stories were great and it was clearly the BBCs answer to Star Wars in the late 70s....
a small band of rebels in an upgraded ship evading an evil galactic empire....sorry federation ![]()

It's not like everyone in ST was a nice guy. They actually got into that a bit with Section 31... I get your point, but everything you mention was all done for a reason, because that's what Gene thought would happen.
Star Fleet for example was never intended to be a military, and only takes on that role because there's no other option. So it makes sense the ships don't look like warships, because they weren't intended to be warships.
Gene's vision of the future is fairly far fetched, but if you accept it for what it is, the show makes a lot more sense.
banks culture has parallels
they have no military as such, but they do have 'contact' section who are armed in case they make contact with hostile races.
They have no spies but they do have 'special circumstances' which are agents by any other name.
Their ships are largely floating cities with offensive and defensive options that can also rebuild themselves if needed to be more warlike.
Some ships are dedicated war ships like 'rapid offensive units' but these were built during a long protracted war they didnt expect themsleves to be in (the plot of consider phlebas the novel).
The ships like i say are controlled by 'minds' that can create human like avatars of themselves and have their own personalitities and some go a bit crazy, some are positively sadistic. they all have great names.

Personally i love the ship/mind name 'attitude adjuster' who i think was a warship.
I actualy wrote a 'culture warship' into a GW campaign once that i ran at the HQ. It was a gaming table that was the inside of a ship and named 'Alien vessel - 'Happy Accident' - loose translation' and one of the warzones being fought over in the badab war campaign...
then again i slipped in a mining colony called 'Bajah' (badger), we used to put daft things like that in all the time to see if anyone noticed.

Horatio Bugler in the BFG BRB springs to mind.
I'll throw a different series out there that I really enjoyed.
The Lost Fleet by Jack Campbell. It's pretty much pure Military Sci-Fi but is somewhat different in that it tries to portray starship combat based on real physics.
It's also different because...
In this series the aliens are well and truly alien beyond anything I've really seen before. Sort of perhaps the Shadow and Vorlon from B5.
Hahah I never notied that.
Before my time they wrote in a mining colony called 'Rad-Ox' (radox was a brand of bath salts in the UK at the time).
There was a planet called 'Minogue K' (kind of obvious that one)
And i remember a white dwarf scenario written around the time i was there that was the 'battle for bridge 2-4' (as in 'a bridge too far').
My crowning glory was slipping in a reference to a space marine 'playing with himself' into warhammer monthly comics editorial... on the surface it was about him playing a chess variant against himself but i got a lot of smutty inuendos in that one... ![]()
clipped to remove your spoiler but this is also something i loved about 'consider phlebas', the 'aliens' are truly inspired, i had to google what other people though they looked like as the vision in my head was really bizare... turns out i was seeing what other people were seeing too but it was very cool
I'll have to go back and reread warhammer monthly...
Then laugh at all the Praetorian guard fighting at "Rorks Drift" against hordes of orks.
I swear they never fought anything else.
