Question about Base Set and Balance of the Force

By El_Tonio, in Star Wars: The Card Game

I've not really had time to play the game. I'm keeping the base set hoping I will some day. I also have an unopened Balance of the Force I'm thiking of selling or trading. Before I do, I'm curious if would be at all worthwhile to play with just the base set and Balance o the Force (or, I would need two copies of either and or other expansions to make it worth it).

Would be great if I could do four player games with just these two (just in case I find the time and folks to play with), but if this wouldn't be very good I'll just keep the base set and sell/trade BotF.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

Balance of the Force includes 6 "limit one per deck" objective sets for Star Wars: The Card Game. The rest of the expansion includes two challenge decks for 1v2 or 1v3 play, in which one side plays a powerful challenge deck and the other side has 2-3 players using normal decks.

Basically, for Balance of the Force, you only ever need the one copy.

As far as whether you need more than just 1 Core and 1 Balance for 4 player games, not really. The reason to get a second Core Set is to maximize the copies of objective sets you can include in your decks for consistency purposes. So with 1 Core and 1 Balance, you may find the games aren't as consistent (for instance, never drawing your 1 copy of Luke Skywalker or something similar) but you can still play with 4 players. A decent amount of the Core Set objective sets actually get better when you use them in multiplayer games.

If you try out the game and decide you like it and might purchase more for it, I'd suggest a second Core followed by Edge of Darkness. Edge of Darkness is more like the Core Set expanded, it breathes life into the Smugglers & Spies and Scum & Villainy affiliations and is similar to the Core in that it requires 2 copies for the maximum deckbuilding options. All expansions past the Core and Edge of Darkness include the max amount of sets you can use in your decks.

If I'm recalling correctly, you will be able to just barely make four full decks out of the core + Balance (7 objective sets in Core + 1 objective set in Balance + 2 neutrals).

You could also play four player with just the smaller starter decks outlined in the rulebook of Core and get the 2v2 rules somewhere else.

If you decide to run the Challenge decks (the 3v1 format in Balance of the Force), though, I'd expect the solo challenge decks to curb stomp the basic players.

Thanks to both of you for your reply... Think I'll hold on to it until I finally get to give it a try.
