No School like the Old School

By Funkleton, in X-Wing

Tried running a Garven / Dutch list in a few games last night.

My goodness that's a flexible and economical combination! Wish I'd tried it sooner!

I'm just fishing for some suggestions for what to fly with this.

Last night I ran Dutch with the almost obligatory ICT and R7T1 and put a generic R7 on Garven. Then added a Blue Squadron with Adv Sens and a Proto with Chardaan.

It felt close to unbeatable but I'm conscious that I've been showing a little too much love to the B-Wing and neglecting other ships and pilots.

Any suggestions?

I run Dutch and Garvin with a PS 4 Y and X wingman each (IIRC)

Ion turrets on both Ys.

Garvin gets R2D2 to keep him alive longer.

stock R2 on dutch to give him more stress clearance.

(i think thats about 100 points)

I tend to sacrifice the generic Y to a degree and let him absorb fire while Dutch controls the middle.

Garvin and the red squadron X wing skirt round the flanks keeping wide fire arcs and are able to tail gate anything 'ioned' by the Ys

Worked in every game i've played with that combo... admittedly thats about four games though.

My favourite Squad to fly for a long time was:

Garvin

Dutch + Ion

Rookie X

Gold Y + Ion

2 points to spend on whatever you want. R5-K6 has been pretty cool in many games. R3-A2 would be a good choice too. Or you change the Rookie into a B-Wing and give Dutch an R2.

I have a funny feeling my generic X and Y were rookie and gold as i dont think i'd have had the points for higher PS.

Yeah it was this

Rookie

Dutch+ion+r2

Gold + ion+ r2

I remembered now that sometimes i drop the gold pilot and upgrade the other three a lot

I always liked (and still do like)

Garvin

Dutch w/ ion cannon turret

and a pair of Red squadron x-wings

I'd move up the Reds, and have at least one target lock, then Garvin would move up and focus and Dutch would move up and target lock giving Garvin a target lock as well. When shooting came around Garvin shoots with tl+f, spends the focus, gives focus to the red with the target lock, and then that red also has tl+f. Basically it's just a way to get two x-wings to have tl+f each round. That can put a lot of hurt on almost anything.

Dutch positively LOVES Squad Leader (on someone else) when he's running R7-T1 and is in close. Potential to pass two TLs a turn.

I like dutch with ICT

Garvin

Tarn Mison

Blue with FCS

assuming evryone gets to take an action, everyone can shoot with target lock and focus.

garvin always focuses, dutch always target locks. blue gets free lock after 1 round

Tarn gerts a free lock as well, so each of them take a focus for their action.

Other pilots that amaze with them:
Lando Calrissian
Airen Cracken
Kyle Katarn

You can also go with 2 or 3 more ships to fill in the remaining slots.

My first post so I hope I can contribute :)

My go-to rebel force is a Dutch-Garven alphabet list:

- Dutch Vander (Y-Wing)

Ion Cannon Turret

R5-K6

- Garven Dreis (X-Wing)

R2 Astromech

- Dagger Squadron (B-Wing)

Fire Control system

- Prototype (A-Wing)

I won a local casual tournament with this (my first and only tournament to date!), albeit a couple of months ago - today you'd have another two points to play with due to the Chardaan Refit.

It's extremely action-efficient - Garven and Dutch each provide an additional action, the B-gets a free target lock if it fires at the same target, and R5K6 can even provide an extra two actions if you're lucky. The A-wing is used as a blocker and/or distractor to allow your big hitters to deal with the enemy force piecemeal.

I know that these days the mid-range pilots aren't that popular, but luckily I don't play in a super-competitive environment,. That being said, I did take down a souped-up Han Solo as I was able to take him on without his XZZ support.

I'm honestly not sure what to do with the additional two points from the Chardaan refit. There might be another few points lose as well (R2 and Dagger to Blue). I guess I'll have to experiment to see...

I just ran a list with them last week and won three of four games with them!

It was a naked Garven, naked Cracken, Dutch with a Blaster Turret and Biggs with R2-F2. By having Biggs in the back with the agility boost and a Focus token from either Cracken or Garven you can Biggs alive long enough for him to provide cover for Dutch and Garven, who both can do some pretty decent attacks. The action economy and resulting firepower is superb. :3c

Did you ever run into a situation where Dutch was denied his support, either as a result of of movement or casualties? That could make things tricky...

One of the things I've found so economical about the Garven - Dutch pairing is that while they complement each other they aren't reliant upon each other - if one goes down or if they get separated, they can just pass actions to another squad member instead.

That's an awful lot of economy and flexibility for not a lot more than 50 points.

One of the last games I played came down to Dutch vs an E-Wing, and Dutch kept him pinned down with an Ion Turret. (I had to first learn to Focus, not TL, against Sensor Jammer, but that's another story...)

Dutch and Luke got pasted yesterday.

Luke +R2D2 + expert handling. Dutch + R2F2+ Ion turret+Proton Torpedoes. Prototype pilot + proton rockets.

The Empire had Maarek Stele + clusters+ squad leader. Royal Guard pilot + RG title+ Push the Limit+ Targeting Computer+ hull upgrade. Sabre squadron pilot + Marksman.

Imperials had initiative. Play was in an asteroid field.

Dutch and the A-wing were lost. Luke got a engine crit, but managed to leave the fight. The Alliance were able to get just one hit on the Sabre TIE interceptor and one shield hit on Maarek.

I really need work on playing Rebels.

Gotta say, not a huge fan of Garven

Much as I like character Xs, he doesn't get the extreme accuracy (TL + re-rolls) that other powerful characters can by slapping on system slots or Predator or PTL sometimes, since he has to focus for his ability to do anything. I much prefer Airen Cracken + Swarm as an enabler of rebel ships, since he gives free actions + high PS for cheaper and his offense (in my experience and with my luck) is basically the same as a focusing X-wing :P

Garven could be good if you focus on defensive stacking (since his focus is assigned and not granted via free action), maybe with someone like Crew Jan Ors or if you pried into your savings for that dang transport box, but I haven't had much luck with him.

I haven't put Dutch on the table yet, though

That will be it then

It the sychronicity between dutch and garven that makes him good.

On their own their ok but the total is greater than the value of the parts.

Focus's are great, TLs are great but when they are swapping them out to each other its shredding.

Any suggestions?

Given R7-T1, if you can proxy, BTL-A4.
