Assigning a token vs. performing an action

By Gibarian, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Basically, this is a Kyle Katarn (crew) card question.

Does assigning a focus token count as you performing a focus action? Or can you clear stress, assign the token, and then choose focus as your action?

Assigning a token is not the same as performing the action. So yes, Kyle can assign a focus and his ship would still be able to perform a focus action.

Assigning or recieving tokens is not an action by itself. It's the consequence of using some abilities or actions.

For example, if you perform the Focus action... you recieve a Focus token. Or another example, if Whisper hits with her attack... she recieves a Focus token.

Note that in your example, the order is wrong. Kyle first performs the Green maneuver to clear the stress, then, he takes the focus action and later, in the combat phase he freely assigns it to a nearby ship.

By the same principle, if the ship that recieves the token has already performed a focus action on its activation turn, he's still free to recieve the extra focus token from Kyle, since recieveing the token doesn't count as an action.

Note that in your example, the order is wrong. Kyle first performs the Green maneuver to clear the stress, then, he takes the focus action and later, in the combat phase he freely assigns it to a nearby ship.

You're thinking of Kyle the HWK-290 pilot. He's talking about Kyle the crew upgrade card (After you remove a stress token from your ship, you may assign a focus token to your ship).

Think of it this way. Doing a focus action is like buying it. While being assigned a focus token is like receiving a gift. You can only buy once per round but can receive unlimited gifts.

So you can do the green maneuver and receive a focus token from Kyle and then do a focus action and get another focus token.

On the same note: Soontir Fel can receive a focus token when he gets a stress token and then can choose to do a focus action. Or vice versa.

But Airen Cracken gives you a free focus action, but only if you didn't do a focus action already.
