So I was thinking, with everyone and their mother* in the EU having some degree of Force sensitivity, has there ever been an anti-Force character? Someone whose presence dampens the reactions/Force sensitivity/Force capabilities of Force users in the area? Seems like it would be a cool character ability, and a bit different than what we're used to with Star Wars.

Well yeah, Palpatine did that. He suppressed the Jedi's ability to perceive him through the Force to remain hidden in plain sight. As far as I know, Maul did it as well. That's why they had no idea he existed

Like dude no5 in the cantina cant just be a guy having a beer... no hes actually got to be a secret rebel agent with a backstory that ties him into major events.
Like they even wrote in that the R5 droid that blows a motivator in ANH did it on purpose as R2 had convinced him it was vital he was sold and allowed to carry on his mission.
Stuff like that annoys me. Pointless 'story' given to *everyone* who is ever seen on screen.
Totally new stuff like kyle katarn being invented for 'dark forces' or the defender in 'tie fighter' or the new characters in rebels and the new character arcs in some of the graphic novels i love but sometimes less is more.
The yslamari animals from the Thrawn books prevented force use near them. The Vong were 'immune' to the force or something.

Character yes, this one Umbaran and his sister. Vong are immune to the force however they do not suppress it. Ysalimari creatures also suppress the force.

Ysalamari do that, and they predate the Vong.

I like the idea that stories could be written about anyone in the Cantina, or elsewhere in the movies, I don't like the idea that every in the universe is related to, and impacts on/be impacted on by the main story arc. It really isn't hard to imagine there a million cool stories occurring in Mos Eisley that have no relation to some farmboy who spent a couple of hours there one day. Just seems a bit lazy trying to link everything up. It seems like a fair bit of the extended universe is spent shrinking it rather than expanding it.

The two Umbarans are in the novel Riptide by Paul S. Kemp. They emit a negative force aura that actually causes lightsabers to almost short out because apparently lightsabers are somewhat Force-powered. These guys aren't as powerful as Ysalamiri though.
The Ysalamiri debuted in the Thrawn trilogy. They're tree-salamanders that emit a no-Force aura about 10 feet out. When you put a bunch of Ysalamiri together, the aura gets bigger. If a Jedi steps next to an Ysalamir he'll feel like Han Solo - no connection to the Force at all.
I'm pretty sure there are a couple characters who have no Force connection at all, as in they are immune to it like the infamous Vong. Granta Omega was one of them, he called it a "Force Blank".
Certainly the most egreious of these retcon origin stories comes from the Man himself having a 9 year old Anakin build C3PO
- for me, that's worse than Jar Jar......yeah, I said it.
Edit: after writing that, decided to go read the wiki on 3PO and thank the maker some good writer went back and at least softened the damage a bit - according to Legends lore at least, Anakin just re-built him. I can tolerate that in my brain

So c3po goes from being one of cybot galacticas best selling models, galaxy wise to being built by a kid from 'old spares' that just happen to make him look just like all the other 3po models seen on hoth etc in the OT.
And while i get the 3po is apparently memory wiped its when Obiwan says 'i dont remember owning a droid' and R2 who is supposed to be cantankerous because of never being memory wiped doesnt recognise Tatootine.
Perhaps the worst example (or evidence) of the fact that there was no 'nine film story arc' ever planned and that Lucas blatantly makes it up as he goes alone is when in ANH Darth Vader feels a 'tremor in the force' when the falcon docks on the death star.
Hang on, you've just had your teacher, your two kids, the robot you built and your old lightsabre you built land in your garage... you should be having a bloody seizure not feeling a tremor.
I think the OT cheekily got away with a lot of the 'made up on the fly' stuff like with Obi wan lying about vader killing lukes father being 'true in a manner of speaking' or whatever but a lot of the prequel stuff is just bobbins...
As for EU books. I bought 'tales from the mos eisley cantina' a long time ago it was enjoyable but suffered from it trying to connect everyone with the main plot. some of it was ok but some of it was really really lame
Like one of the stories is about one of the 'sandtrooper' patrol who is apparently serving a a storm trooper because he was an ATAT pilot who in a training sim made his ATAT kneel down when attacked by snowspeeders, he wins the sim but because they dont want anyone knowing the ATAT has a weakness hes transferred to keep him quiet.
COME ON!
The empire would have just took him to one side and shot him in the head.
Stormtroopers are supposed to be politically unshakeable elite.
You dont make a tank driver you've just disciplined/reprimanded into a stormtrooper in the hope that will make him keep his mouth shut.
Likewise by ESB the 'snowspeeders' are quite new to the rebellion and modified airspeeders, they even say they are having trouble adjusting them to the role in the film, its highly unlikely the imperials have a training sim where airspeeders try and trip them up and then everyone totally ignores that sim and acts surprised when they topple a few.
I think that was the short story in that collection that annoyed me the most.
Some of them were quite good, like the one about the rodian (IIRC), the rest were average but some were howlingly bad.
I qualify that view btw by having previously worked as a 'new submissions' editor for a sci fi publishing house and deciding *which* stories were going in compilations. Our anthologies went on sale via Simon and Schuster etc so we're not talking about kickstarters and ebooks here. Publishing a turkey could have cost us a lot of money.
