New Smuggler Book Announced!

By Lancer999, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

The Specializations seem a bit odd to me. Charmer, Gambler, and Gunslinger all feel like more specific versions of the Scoundrel to me. I hope the overlap isn't too much, and I hope they still leave a solid role for the Scoundrel.

Was thinking much the same myself.

The Scoundrel already covers the "being charming and conniving" and "good with a blaster" aspects pretty well

Charming & Conniving: Convincing Demeanor and Natural Charmer talents, as well as Charm and Deception as a bonus career skills.

Good with a Blaster: Quick Draw, Quick Strike, Rapid Reaction, and Side Step talents (all handy things for a gunfighter) as well as Cool and Ranged (Light) as bonus career skills. Also got Soft Spot for added damage potential using one of the Smuggler's generally preferred characteristics (Cunning) and ranks of Toughened to further help combat survivability.

That and Charmer could also considered part of the Gambler's portfolio as well, though with Charmer I guess it could depend, particularly if they incorporate some of the new talents from the Performer spec, like Distracting Behavior, though again it could be something added to the Gambler just as easily (think Maverick from the Mel Gibson movie of the same name).

I was kinda hoping for a spec to allow a Smuggler to make their own "personal modifications" to a transport, such as what Han claimed about the Falcon in ANH after Luke called it a piece of junk. In effect, a spec to let Smugglers treat the party's ship as their own personal hot-rod.

As for new ships, I'm really hoping the VCX-100 (aka The Ghost from Rebels, though sans Hera's many modifications) makes an appearance. I'm hoping that this book offers a bunch of non-CEC ship models, as there's plenty of other ship manufacturers other than CEC and I'd like to see some of those vessels get covered rather than getting even more YT-series knock-offs.

Species-wise, I'm thinking Falleen might be a good bet, as they generally fit with a "smuggling and criminal underworld" theme thanks to Xizor and his association with Black Sun. I do agree that Sullustans are a strong possibility for a reprinted species. Gotals I think might be better suited to the eventual Bounty Hunter book than the Smuggler one.

And I agree that Wroonians would make a good choice for this book, though I'd be quite amused of Squibs made their appearance; always been fond of those furry little nutjobs, and even more so after one player in the last SWSE game I was in played a freaking awesome Squib Scoundrel.

The girl on the cover is probably just a Human with a funky set of eyebrows, much as the bloke on the cover of Far Horizons was.

Gunslinger and Gambler are fine imo. They'll use Gunslinger the same way they did Heavy for HG. Gambler is a good vehicle for fleshing out Cool and maybe Vigilance.

Charmer though I agree seems a bit of an odd man out. I like the idea of a ship mod spec, but given what a tough nut the Tech splatbook is going to be, probably better to skip that. I was thinking maybe something like a spec called First Mate, that would act as some kind of a support/buffer to the rest of the ship crew might be a good idea, but Charmer it is.

That sounds a lot like the Rigger from the Ace's book.

I'm actually pleased that we're seeing another three new specs. After the Explorer book, I was afraid we'd be seeing a lot more duplication across the lines than we have done.

I guess I'm okay with the Specs - 'shooty smuggler' and 'talky smuggler' seem fitting to me. I guess there's room for a tech smuggler as you mention, though they might be saving these specs for the Technician book. I did wonder if they might go with a pirate/leader type spec.

While a cool idea, consider the lead time needed for this project and when we started getting info on the VCX-100. Granted, that wasn't my part of the book, so I don't know.

I, too, would love to see Herglic as another playable species, especially if they're Silhouette 2! They would fit in with the spacer and gambler concepts for Smugglers. I could also see a felinoid species like Cathar or Farghul as the gambler type. Assuming the other two species are Falleen and Gotal, I'm happy as I like both of them, especially Gotal.

Gotals I think might be better suited to the eventual Bounty Hunter book than the Smuggler one.

Remember that Han gambled with a gotal in "The Courtship of Princess Leia," and said gotal seemed to have a few tricks that were really tied to gambling with sensing emotions. If the gotal is in this book, it is a pretty solid fit.

I can see the combat potential as well (as Mon Mothma had a gotal bodyguard in the X-Wing books), but as we already have a Hired Gun and Colonist book, I don't think we're getting another "guard" build in the near future, so. . .

Knowing full well there are things you cannot talk about, what is the lead time on something like this?

Still holding out hope for an Ee as a playable species. Come on FFG, make it happen! (The judges would also accept Zeltron as an answer).

Yes! Psychic Worms offer the ultimate Star Wars experience!

If anything the new specializations again showed me the career should have been Scoundrel instead of Smuggler....

And, Charmer sounds like a strange specialization if put next to the others... It seems more a character trait than anything else.

Excited for the book though!

What about Lorrdians as the race of the character on the front cover?

^ what about human?

Longer than you might think. A good comment from the Order 66 podcast is that FFG are about a year ahead of everybody else, beyond that I can't say.

Hey, everyone! So excited about the announcement of this book. I didn't work on it, but my very good buddy RKBrooks did! It's his second book (his first was Hutt Space) and I just know you guys are gonna dig it when it finally comes out.

Sounds about right to me. Thanks!

As for species?

Have we had Mon Calamari in EotE yet? Or Devaronians? (God, playing a character like Vilmarh Grahrk - smuggler and "friend" to Quinlan Vos - would be awesome.)

If not, I'd like to get some of these more "major" races firmly planted in EotE.

So forget the Gotal and whatnot...

Let's see:

- Mon Cal

- Sullustan

- Devaronian

...unless, of course, some of these have already been featured in prior books. Ha.

More than likely the "Charmer" variant will be similar to the Lando Calrissian type. If you look at Lando in the JoY book, natural charmer is one of his talents. And there are some other things in there that will probably be installed in the tree of Charmer. So if someone wanted to be the "James Bond" type PC then Charmer would be a way to go. Then piggyback with Thief or Scoundrel or something of that nature to augment Charmer.

Species-wise, I'm thinking Falleen might be a good bet, as they generally fit with a "smuggling and criminal underworld" theme thanks to Xizor and his association with Black Sun. Well given that we have a picture with a Gotal and a Falleen in the release I am gonna say Gotal Falleen and Sullustans.

Also... Tying into my previous post...

Have we seen Quarren yet?

If we don't see Devaronians in this book, I would expect them in the Bounty Hunter sourcebook or maybe the Soldier book for Age of Rebellion. I would be surprised to see Quarren in "Fly Casual" as the species is notoriously antisocial and isolationist.

Meh, was hoping that it would be the technician. Really want more droid options for PCs.

Likely either march April or August. With an adventure in February. A Region book in June July.

I'm not planning on purchasing any of the AoR or F&D books.

So, again, I really hope more of the "major" races start appearing in these EotE books. Or we're given a generic sourcebook for aliens, starships, and the like.

I mean, where are the...

Mon Cal?

Quarren?

Devaronians?

Sullustans?

And even the...

Togruta?

Kel Dor?

Nautolans?

Cereans?

For all of you clamoring for the Falleen (much better as NPCs in this environment) or the Gotal? Geezus...
