Deathwatch Play-by-Post Chapter 1: Brimstone Stormclouds

By mikecobb, in Deathwatch

The team moved quickly through the jungle, following directions to stick to denser terrain while still making for the listening post. There was no sign of the persuing battlesuits. Perhaps they were too cumbersome to navigate the jungle?

Roll Awareness everyone!

OOC- also please keep an eye on your pms. I may pm you information, such as the results of an awareness test you pass that nobody else does.

I rolled 90. Derp.

17 on a 64 would be five degrees of success. One natural for passing and four on the dice.

Check your inbox Davin.

Claudius keys his vox to a team wide channel. "Contact rear. Possible Tau forces approaching. I have Jet wash in auditory range. Recommend we halt movement and set an ambush."

I rolled a 20 with a target of 40. 2 DoS I believe

"Claudius and Cletian hide here and wait for whoever is following us. If it is the enemy, wait for them to pass, then attack their rear. Pluvius and I will press forward another 25 meters before concealing ourselves to make it look as though the trail continues. We will attack once the enemy turns to engage Cletian and Claudius."

For my concealment attempt I roll 36, which I believe is exactly the same as my agility.

Pluvius follows Cornelius and attempts to conceal himself behind shrubbery and foliage, keeping his heavy bolter trained on the direction they just came from.

I rolled 53 on the concealment with an agility of 30. Looks like my armour is visible through the flora.

OOC- truthfully, space marines in power armour, unless they are Raven Guard, typically have a -40 to concealment (-30 from power armour, -10 from hulking). Would Cornelius like to revise strategy, or should we attempt to be really lucky with hiding?

OOC - How thick is the foliage? Would it grant us any bonuses? Also, how the heck do you ambush someone without hiding? Should we just turn around and charge at whatever-it-is? Stand right where we are and shoot them once they come into sight? What if Cletian and Claudius each moved 10m off trail in either direction, would that distance allow them to go undetected?

Better idea:

IC - Cornelius asks Claudius, "About how close do you think they could get before they can see us in this foliage?" since Cladius is the one with stealth/recon tactics.

OOC - Is it alright to assume we each know a little bit about each other and our respective abilities and histories? We are all from the same chapter and I'm assuming there is at least some opportunity for a team to converse before being sent on its first mission.

If the rest of you think this is stupid, we can just wait for them to show up and start fighting, but I want to set a proper trap and at least try to cut off their retreat.

OOC- yes you know each other.

Yes, slight bonus due to foliage.

Claudius, roll tactics: recon and stealth

OOC- Rolled a 45 on a 46.

Cornelius- you estimate visiblility at 40m. Closer than that will reduce the foliages effective cover.

"Claudius and Cletian, move 40 meters off trail in either direction, then move 20 in the direction we came from. Pluvius and I will move another 50 meters ahead and take cover. Unless the target is identified as friendly, we open fire once they reach the point where our paths diverge."

OOC - Do I need to roll concealment again?

OOC- everyone should roll concealment again, with only a -10 modifier. As concealment is an opposed roll, the battlesuit will be rolling awareness as Iit comes into visual range.

IC- "Aye, brother sergeant," Cletian moved into the jungle in the designated pattern.

OOC-rolled an 85 on a 66... I'M OVER HERE!

Claudius begins his movement. Hitting ever twig and branch along the way making all kinds of noise.

OOC - rolled 50 on a 26. At least I'm not trying to sneak around behind.

OOC- just waiting on Pluvius. Cletian also rolled above his agility on his silent move test, so there is some noise there. Of course, silent move/concealment is always an opposed test, so we may all get lucky and the Tau may be blind as a bat.

OOC- I will be starting the encounter today. If anyone has any pre-encounter actions now is the time.

The enemy is a crisis suit, but has been toned down from the book so he doesnt kill us all. The trees and foliage provide +4 armour to every location covered.

With a hiss and a whine, and a heavy thud, the Tau landed on the jungle floor. Its head swiveled about, pausing as it looked at each 'hiding' marine. It clearly knew they were all there (OOC- I just rolled under 20 4 times in a row...I hope he doesn't do that at fighty time).

"I know you are here, humans of the Imperium!" he calls out, advancing toward Cornelius and Pluvian. His gun comes up.

Roll initiative everyone!

OOC- Rolled a ten for Initiative.

Claudius trains his Bolter on the Crisis suit as he prepares to open fire.

OOC - rolled 7 with an agility modifier of 3 for a total of 10. Also where exactly is it touching down?

IC - Cornelius takes partial cover behind a nearby tree and readies his bolter as he tries to get a look at the suit's colors and emblem through the foliage. (rolled 79)

OOC- he has come down right in the middle of everyone, so about 50 feet away from all of you.

In the morning (9 hours my time) I will be advancing the turn with initiative order. If Frosty hasn't added his initiative, the turn will progress without him.

Davin, then shadow, the crisis, then frosty.

The crisis suit at this point has cover providing bonusses as well.

OOC-rolled a 27 on a 90 (50 base,+20 size, +10 for Semi-auto, +10 for Half Range). That means 6 DoS for three shots. Damage rolls are:

1st Shot: 28 Pen 4 (Base of 9 +2 from Bolter Mastery and a total of 17 Damage from dice).

2nd Shot: 20 Pen 4

3rd Shot: 20 Pen 4

Edit:

4th Shot: 14 Pen 4

IC- Cladius opens fire with his Bolter his rounds flying true hitting his enemy. With the rightous fury of The Emperor.
