So like the tile says, i got a Kitchen table thats jussssssst off for legal size. Now my question to the community is whether or not the missing space will affect my gameplay in the long term if use it to skirmish with my roommate.
Playing area question 35.5x35.5

I think it'll be perfectly fine. If you think it's an issue, you might want to set up your ships Range1 minus 1/2" from the edge.
Not a big deal for gameplay at all. Your only issue will be the lack of room on the sides for cards and whatnot.
Thanks, thats a good call on the setup Mikael.
Our play surface at the local pub is off by 2.5-3 bases. We basically wing it with initial positions, some ships start "off the table". It hasn't been a problem, and I am the type that follows the rule of 11 and whatnot on initial approaches, and it never bothered me.

I started with a 34x34 surface for the first 6 months or so. It's doable, it can make a difference on how quickly ships get into range of each other, and how clustered the asteroid field is, and large ships especially the shuttle, can go off board easier in some situations. On a 35.5x35.5 you could always house that as long as a ship's base is only 1/4 off the board it's not destroyed.
I must admit I always did wonder why they made the play area an imperial (Pun intended) dimension of 36 inches x 36 inches while all the straight movement dimensions and the ship base dimensions are all in increments of 40 millimetres.
It would seem your table is a 900mm x 900mm table top, instead of the 914.8mm x 914.8mm (36x36) prescribed as the play area.
All of the gaming boards I play on are 900x900 and it's perfectly fine I wouldn’t worry about it, even when you do jump onto an official play mat you won't notice the difference.
In fact, the fractionally smaller playing surface will make you more accustomed to slightly denser asteroids honing your flying ability…… well in theory anyway.
If you are flying straight at each other, then it may affect the "rule of 11" for when you think you will be at range 3. Otherwise it's not a big deal.
that was pretty much the size of all the FFG-provided playmats at GenCon Nationals, so sure, go for it

Speaking of, anyone know which mats FFG uses at their tourneys? Just curious.
I had a similiar issue...what I did to solve it was went to the hardware store and bought a piece of thin particle board to put on top of the table...it was sturdy enough that the edges that hung off the table could still hold ships and it was only like $5-10.

+1 on this...what company does FFG use for official events

Range 1 minus 1/4" from the edge. Per player
You don't actually need the exact dogfight play area, irregular sizes don't mess with the game much at all. It's only if you're practicing for tournaments that a precise gameplay area matters.
Galeforce 9 mats are all 35.5 x 35.5, so MOST games (at least in my area) are actually played on non-regulation sized boards. And I didn't notice any real difference when playing on FFG's presumably 36x36 play area. I will second the comment about not having any space for cards. That's the one thing that bothers me when TO's don't provide enough space for cards.
