Chewy (crew) vs Rexler's ability

By dotswarlock, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Here is a hypothetical scenario (because I have not encountered it yet, but I could since I'll be experimenting with Rexler).

Take a falcon with a chewbacca crew member, shieldless, being hit with 4 hits by Rexler who has a focus in reserve. Both the chewbacca and Rexler effects can trigger upon being delt damage cards. In Chewy's case, he can also discard a crit and even look at it before deciding to use his ability or not (see FAQ). So what determines the timing?

Can Chewy wait for Rexler to trigger his ability to discard the most damning card or does the clause "immediately" means that he must pick one face down and hope for the best once Rexler triggers his ability?

Granted, the odds of this scenario happening are small, but Murphy's Law has backstabbed me enough in real life for me to take it into account ;)

Rexler's ability doesn't trigger on dealt cards - it triggers when he spends the focus after the attack. So the cards are dealt face down and Chewie must be used at that point without knowing what's there.

To clarify, chewbacca (crew) triggers *when* the cards are dealt, Rexler triggers after the attack (and thus after the cards are dealt).

So as buhallin mentions, chewie would have to be used before Rexler gets the chance to trigger.

With the timing listed by Buhallin and Cptnhalfbeard, the other problem is Chewie is left with what ever crits are dealt, so he must use his ability before Rexlar turns his damage cards face up.

In Chewy's case, he can also discard a crit and even look at it before deciding to use his ability or not (see FAQ).

If Chewie's ship is dealt a faceup damage card (critical), everyone gets to see it anyway, but he still can't look at a facedown damage card before discarding it. You've just got to pick a random facedown one or choose a faceup one.

If the player decides to let Rexler do his thing, Chewie's trigger moment has passed and he now has to suffer whatever gets flipped over.

In Chewy's case, he can also discard a crit and even look at it before deciding to use his ability or not (see FAQ).

Minor point, but there is no decision to be made with Chewbacca. His ability is not optional, so you must always flip the damage card face down.

As the OP and post title describe, the topic being discussed is the crew Chewbacca, not the pilot.

It doesn't really work that way - you are dealt damage one at a time, so each one is a new opportunity to trigger chewie (crew). You're not dealt all the cards at once. So if you're dealt 3 face up cards you can either:

Trigger chewie on the first one, regain a shield that absorbs the second damage, and then take the 3rd damage.

Take the first damage, trigger chewie on the second and regains shield that absorbs the third.

Take the first and second cards, trigger chewie on the third, and regain a shield.

Wow, you're right! I found it on page 16 of the rule book that damage is dealt one at a time (and resolved). This also makes the FAQ on Rexler about the case with minor explosion crit make so much more sense timing wise! Thank you!

My point was: it appeared the OP thought you could inspect the facedown damage cards before discarding one, which of course, you can't. And as you've correctly stated, you've just got to pick one as it is dealt.

Ahh gotcha, makes sense - just me being über picky about wording as always, lol. ^_^
