I plan to get 2 core because i play casually with anybody who wants to play. But i will also get 1 of each expansion eventually because of the different upgrafe cards.
2 CORE SETS REVEISITED
Bottom line is if your the only person in your group getting anything armada I would say get 2 core sets. If you have others that will play and purchase items then one set would be sufficient.
With the price of everything I am going to opt for just one of everything. one core, one set of ships, one set of fighters etc... for the time being. Once I can develop a strategy and see what cards come with what (plus I can proxy all of the cards outside of tournament play) I will determine what else I need. But this is the trick with this game over X-Wing. When I got into X-Wing there was that nice video tutorial they had posted, along with an obvious reason to get more than one expansion. With Armada, I just feel like I don't know enough or feel comfortable enough with the game to buy multiples of the core or other ships before I really get into the game.
I know that I will eventually buy multiples, but it comes down to do I need multiples of some? the VSD is too expensive (point wise) to really warrant a second core and the expansion. And will I ever use 3 Nebulon's or Corvettes? Crovettes maybe, but I would guess probably not on the Frigate.
The only thing I might get two of to start is the Imp fighter expansion, cause I need more Interceptors and Bombers.
Ordered 1 core and 3 of everything else. Going to be playing 500 pt games by the sounds of the group.
I was buying one of each item but then figured that this will be sold out by mid summer or whenever I finally decided I wanted another set so I picked up another core set.
...one of everything... Once I can develop a strategy and see what cards come with what (plus I can proxy all of the cards outside of tournament play) I will determine what else I need.
I will definitively not buy an expansion twice just because i need another copy of a card which i can as well print out myself. I instead think that enough upgrade cards should be supplied with the expansions. I have no problem with paying once for each new piece of content, but triing to make money out "tournament rule requires that you have multiple copies of the same card which we sell for 30 bucks each" is something that just annyos the customer. Thats ridiculous WYSIWYG ripoff.
No one knows at this point how many upgrade cards will come with the expansions...

I think FFG does just fine as is. They certainly cannot please everyone, nor be expected to prognosticate the meta better than they already do; so if a couple people that want to fly fringe min-max lists are butt-hurt because they need to buy 5 CR90 expansions and 3 Neb-B just to get the exact ships and upgrades they want, then that's fine by me.
Or, you know, they could borrow a couple of copies of what they need from someone for that tournament. That's what my friends and I do for X-Wing. It is a great community, and I don't expect Armada to be any different. I would even wager that at the local level I could borrow (even if none of my immediate friends were there) literally every thing I needed to play in an X-Wing tournament (dice, templates, ships, upgrades). At a Regional or above level tournament, I bet I could do the same, but be able to put together exactly the list I wanted to.
Edited by Gravis2nd core is essential in my opinion. But I will require multiple expansions for a 300/ship builds. Just for fun it would be cool to field vics. Then there is the upgrade cards as well. Insane to do but I've been working on X-wing, might as well follow suit in this.
Reasoning for 2 cores in my case is, the extra dice and rulers will be necessary as some of my friends aren't buying into the game.
For me, just 1 core.
I bought one of all the expansions as well. My guess is that I'll need to add 1 more corellian corvette and 1 more gladiator.
I'm guessing I don't think I'd ever field a fleet with more than 3 corvettes or 2 gladiators. Although that could change with the gladiator, will have to see how the game plays out.
The only other thing(s) I'd want from the core then would be the dice and movement tool and I can get those much cheaper as individual packs.
I plan on just getting one Core. Then fleshing out with expansions. To be honest, initially, I am only really interested in Imperial Fleets at the moment.

I went with two cores. I am feeling better about the decision to do so considering that Wave 1 is a giant question mark in terms of release... but my primary reason was this precisely. I have yet to find any real support for Armada in my area, and I had a feeling that a second core will help immensely in my little crusade after release. So much hesitancy!
You have to remember that you aren't likely to find much support for a game with a relative "?" for a release date.
That's totally fair - and I completely understand feeling hesitant about Armada for whatever reason, whether that be cost, the question mark of a release date, comparing the game length to X-wing, etc. I'm just hoping the current frosty attitude doesn't last long once it's out there in the universe though.
People are always reluctant to change. Once we show them how awesome the game is they will come around. Besides... this is the most active forum I've ever seen for a game that hasn't even been released yet. It has a bright future.
Wow - are we the bright center of the universe?! Makes a nice change...
I suspect Moff is right - the game will have a massive appeal to all sorts of new people like me, and will likely also appeal to a lot of the X-Wing players. How well it is supported in your local area though will probably come down to your LGS. Mine is excellent, but if yours is not then think about doing something to get them onside. Taking your new stuff out of the box using it to help a store run demo games will probably net you more players and a happy store owner. They may be willing to offer more future support if they know they have a core of loyal players from Wave I.

Due to concerns about both the timing of Wave I's release and the availability of sets due high demand, I went with 3 cores. I am certain I will want at least 2 -- for the eventual Epic Games over 300 points. The 3rd set I will bet able to sell or give away.
Having multiple sets also positions me nicely as an Unofficial Game Demo-Dude. As far as I can tell, FFG prefers that FLGS's run demo's and events. Not being a shop owner, I will have to go the unofficial route.

This seems to be key in my neck of the woods as well. True, this is a very active forum for an unreleased table game, but it is also currently among the only concentrated discussion worldwide right now.
Whether exaggerated or maybe not completely informed, staff at a shop I visited mentioned bringing in * a * copy of Armada because the owner is a Star Wars fan who wanted it on the shelf. Yikes! So I'm with you, Kahlain - this is a situation where I'm either hoping to find a hidden gem of Armada excitement or I'll be bringing along a lot of stuff to the local shop try to get games in with anyone who is interested to hopefully get them more interested. It's not a position I've ever found myself in, as I'm usually the one late to the party (like x-wing, lol) but it's exciting.
I had originally been planning on just 1 Core.. but now I'm thinking about 2, because I'd really like to be able to play 300pt games relatively quickly, and waiting 5-6 more weeks for Wave 1 would be rough.
I added 2nd core set to my pre order on saturday.
This way we have enough ships, and two sets of cards & dice and also 2 manouver tools.
I figured its the best way to get the other 3 members of my group on board. Good thing is that 2 of them are SW fans!
The problem now is, who is going to play with the rebels???
