Victory Is Mined - 2014 Worlds List Recap

By SableGryphon, in X-Wing

Thank you very much for sharing. Going to love having a reason to field my two bombers :D

I'm not sure how to change the overall idea to suit my range of models (don't think I'll be getting any more bombers, sadly :P ), but I personally lean towards a few favorite ships (Firesprays included! though I don't believe I'd take one with proximity mines outside of S&V, since Firesprays do have other actions to take and a rear-arc to utilize) and high PS pilots backing up a low PS wall. Maybe the congestion created by proximities could make it even more difficult for opponents to catch the likes of Soontir Fell or Whisper...

Also going to have to find a way to get a 2nd mine token, fingers crossed that it's in Most Wanted along with all the Firespray stuff

You could try this:

Yorr

x2 BH + Tactician + Prox

You move up then have both BH's K-Turn in front of the enemy squad. Yorr takes the stress and then they can drop the mines and still attack that turn. Tacticians are fun but you can do what ever you want with those 4 points.

I just have to say..... best X-Wing forum name EVER

No, no. Haven't you been paying attention to the forums for the past few months? TIE bombers are terrible, ordnance isn't worth the points, and there are no lists with acceptable performance that don't fly a Falcon, Phantom, or 7+ ships. Anyone who believes otherwise is guilty of wishful thinking.

(I'd say "welcome to the wishful thinking club", but I'm pretty sure you've been there at least as long as I have. I'm delighted to see your post, in any case, and glad Worlds was a great experience for you. :) )

It's true, and the Worlds results (with no Bombers in the top 32) underlines the conventional wisdom.

Still, I loved bombers before it was cool, and I flew my 4xBomber list again last night to a hard-won casual-game victory at the FLGS. My one prox mine rolled all blanks though. :(

I have plenty of Fighters but I really want to use my bombers

Give you three guesses as to why, four if it feels like a long shot ;)

I'm in the same boat. I have two bombers and one Firespray...so only one prox mine. Luckily there is another prox mine included in the IG-2000 expansion of Scum and villainy...so if I were to get one of everything new I'd have exactly 2. People that are playing Scum will probably get more than one IG-2000 because of the title, so that means more mines....I have yet to decide if I'm going to double up on it or not.

Awww, just the IG-2000 :( ?

Going to have to borrow from my local group, then, because I don't think I'll be investing in a whole other faction for a little while (pilfering my already owned ships for scum and vice-versa is a-okay, though...go logic :D !)

Could go for a second firespray, but that's going to take quite a while's worth of juryrigging up enough lists to justify the purchase...

anyway, Bombers still seem to be the prefered method of imperial proximity mine delivery (rebels, at a glance, will have Ys). I do wonder how a 36 point Bounty Hunter would preform in a similar role with less proximity mines than Sable's mind-blowing list (obviously) but with the added utility of butt-shots (and, imo, an all round excellent stat-line) minus the pain of losing some very useful actions.

Yeah, same here - just the one. I'm also not particularly drawn to the IG-2000, so I doubt I'll be picking that one up. I do have a friend who seems pretty keen, but I don't really see him using bombs. Maybe I'll have to offer him some money for that card.

I've always loved the way TIE Bombers look, so I'm glad people out there are having success with them.

I am curious though, did you consider running Howlrunner to give the squad a bit more reliability once the bombs were used? If so, why did you reject the idea.

This is not a criticism of your squad, it's pretty intimidating given the amount of HP to get through, it's just that my experience running bombers always makes me wish they had a bit more bite once the ordnance is dropped.

After you posted your overview of the changes to Prox Mines Sable, I did indeed go out and buy myself a second firespray. Why? Because I had a gift card and I wanted more Prox mines. I flew 2 bombers with them the next night, and had a lot of fun laying mines. I did not fly the list well and was torn apart by a Phantom, but watching the bombs strip shields off my enemies was a lot of fun.

I need a little push to buy one more bomber to round out for 4 and 2 more sets of mines...dammit. Why are you doing this to me??

For being a little more on topic, great read. I'm glad you had fun with the list, and I'm glad it did well for you at World's. Keep on trying the different lists and posting about 'em, cause I certainly love reading about them and trying them.

Has there ever been justification given for why bombs aren't considered secondary weapons? Would the Jonus and Krassis rerolls or munitions failsfe make them too deadly? Seismics don't roll and the others are pretty expensive even if they did occasionally come with a reroll. Would another tactic or archetype be bad?

The rule book defines secondaries as having an attack value, I forget hich pag. Bomb upgrades don't have one

From page 19 of the rulebook under the header 'Secondary Weapons':

Ships may perform only one attack during the Combat phase. Secondary weapon cards show the

header “Attack:”

Mines and Bombs don't have that header making them not secondary weapons. That has been upheld consistently in their rulings.

Great list, thanks for sharing. I have never used prox mines so far, being great fan (and used them to great success several times) of the seismic though - so I'm not against bombs ;-)

Nice to see a very good use of low PS bombers.

I might give it a try (although I have a lot of lists I want to play, and only so much time for gaming), but for me having 24 points after fitting out the bombers screams "Sabre Squadron + Predator/Ptl" to me, as it fits my playstyle much better. Also I believe that the interceptor will draw much more attention here by posing a greater thread (either real or just imagined by opponent), giving the bombers more time to get into the opponents face and place their bombs.

Good stuff Sable! I was the guy next to you (Echo, Doomshuttle, Bounty Hunter with the metal tokens) in our final round of the Winter Tournament when you and your opponent decided to just joust since it was the last match of the weekend. ;-) I really wanted to play against that list but alas we were one table off from each other.

Amazing originality and I love how you did so well against top players with such a unique list. I really respect that and look forward to seeing what else you come up with in the near future. Keep inspiring us with your lists! :)

I played Doomshuttle, Howlrunner, 3x scimitar w/ prox mine in a casual game this weekend, losing only a single bomber. The Howl reroll let me chew up a bandit at long range, saving me from using vader to finish it off. came out of the joust dropping 2 mines on Ibtisam to finish her off, and played mop up from there.
