After a 4-0 start, a flaming crashing wreck...

By emsgoof, in X-Wing Battle Reports

As I wrote last time, I was 4-0 in my journey into X-Wing. Today I met up with my friend to play a few more games of X-Wing. I wanted to try out my new Y-wing and additional X-wing I got recently, so went with an XXXY list.

Garven w/ R2 astromech

Dutch w/ Ion Cannon and R7T1

2 Rookie X-Wings

I was up against 2 Firespray Bounty Hunters and an Onyx Squadron Tie Defender.

After the first movements, we were situated as such:

A few more turns went poorly for me, being initially caught out by the Firespray shooting to the rear (first time going against them), and poor maneuvering on my part.

One of the rookies went down pretty quickly, and I couldn't line up a shot for anything today... On the plus side, I took out the Defender pretty quickly.

The ions weren't really helpful during the game, due to my poor shooting with the X-Wings, and the fact that you need multiples to do anything.

In the end, I just had Dutch against 2 mostly undamaged Firesprays. It didn't turn out well.

Going for a second game to try and reclaim some of my shattered morale ;) I went with:
Lando - Nien Nunb

Luke Skywalker - R2D2

Red Squadron pilot

The only difference my opponent had this time was a Delta Squadron pilot Defender w/ engine upgrade.

Looking back, my setup basically put me in a bad spot from the get-go, but I was trying to focus on one ship while I had the chance. It didn't work.

I didn't take as many pictures this time, but I lost both X-Wings pretty early on, and my opponent managed to fly a Firespray off the table by mixing up his Firespray dials.

My YT-1300 was destroyed the next turn by the Firespray shooting through it's rear arc.

Overall it was still a fun experience, especially since there were other X-Wing players in the store this time watching and giving pointers after both matches. It was a lot of fun, and hopefully I'll be able to get out to the store more often (after I build up my rebel forces some more - 3 X wings, 1 Y wing, and 1 YT1300 are rather limiting right now).

Redemption. 2 games today, 1 win, 1 loss.

First game, I took Wedge, Biggs w/ Shield Upgrade, and 2 Rookie X-Wings. I was going against VT-49 (Rear Admiral Chiraneau) and Firespray (Kath Scarlet). The VT-49 had a bunch of upgrades on it (remember Darth Vader crew, Rebel captive, ruthlessness, but pretty sure I'm missing something on the Deci or the Firespray).

Setup I put the Rookies on either side, and Biggs / Wedge in the center.

The first three turns with me maneuvering to get all four ships lined up to focus on the Decimator. The plan worked, with the Decimator not being able to stand up to the fire from the X-Wings for 2 turns, and I lost Biggs in the process (as I expected to). Unfortunately this left me a bit out of position to take on the Firespray.

Spent a couple turns chasing the Firespray down, but ended up getting the job done, with just the loss of Biggs.

Second game today was the first time I tried Imperials. I took Howlrunner w/ Swarm Tactics, 3x Academy Pilots, 1 Alpha Squadron Interceptor, and Carnor Jax. I was facing Corran horn w/ Predator FCS and R2D2, Keyan Farlander w/ PTL, and 2 Bandit Squadron Z-95s.

My thought on deployment was to run the Interceptors together, and try my hand at running a small swarm. Unfortunately my poor deployment and rush to get Jax into play with his action limiting ability led to my downfall.

IMG_0137_zps1d2fa9df.jpg

My opponent recognized the need to get rid of Jax quickly, and I didn't realize how important it was to focus on staying out of arcs with the Imperials since they don't have shields to help in their defense.

IMG_0138_zps12121326.jpg

I ended up in a big boondoggle about halfway through the game, and it took me a couple of turns to straighten myself out.

IMG_0139_zpscd5bb5e1.jpg

When that mess was done, I had taken out one Z-95 and the B-Wing, but had lost both Interceptors and most of my TIE Fighters had quite a bit of damage.

IMG_0140_zpsd012204b.jpg

A few turns later, the other Z-95 was gone, but so were most of my ships. After this shot, I lost another TIE, got some damage on Corran, but ended up losing (Corran only had 1 shield missing at the end).

The Imperials were fun to fly, but I'd want to watch some more "How To" videos on swarms and get some more practice with them before trying them in anything remotely competitive. A lot of fun today!

Nice reports dude, always good to learn something every game, and that seems to be the case. Love to see more :)

You need to send the Swarm into joust and flank with the interceptors. Interceptors won't last long staring down the barrel of a bunch of rebel guns. Really they need PTL to get the most out of their arc-dodging.

I love the way you give Wedge the Escort X-wing just like I do.

Also glad your opponent saw the light.

Delta > Onyx.

Dig your bat-reps man. Love the pictures too.

Good reports!

4 x-wings. Falcon. 4 TIE's. Interceptors. So jealous. Hopefully after Christmas I'll be getting the transport to get me up to 3 X's. Love my y-wing though, don't lose faith in it! Goldy - ion & r2 astro is tried and true for me. Imperials are tricky at the beginning. You think flying TIE's in tricky, fly a phantom. Your mind might melt, then fly Echo and your mind will explode. LOL  Love the reports!

I learned the hard way that if you ever face corran with r2-d2, make him your NUMBER ONE TARGET. It can be incredibly frustrating to keep doing 1-2 damage on him and then he runs away for a turn and gets his shields back again.

This coming Monday we will be trying out one of the Rebel transport missions. I'll be sure to take pictures and notes to throw here after that's done.

2 games today. Our first was the first mission using the Rebel Transport. We received a couple of comments about nobody ever seeing the GR-75 being used in missions.

I used:
Wedge

Biggs w/ Shield Upgrade and R2D2

Rookie Squadron pilot
GR-75 w/ combat upgrade and WED-15 repair droid.

Opponent used:
Bounty Hunter w/ FCS and Engine Upgrade
Bounty Hunter w/ FCS

Omicron Shuttle w/ Engine Upgrade

Setup:
IMG_0159_zps4221a6af.jpg

My opponent rapidly closed in, trying to focus on the transport.

IMG_0160_zps5e7db2c0.jpg

Unfortunately he got a little too close, and this ended up costing him one of his Firesprays and his Shuttle.

IMG_0161_zps0be918bc.jpg

After this, I ended up using Wedge to race ahead and flip control of the mines to the Rebel side.

IMG_0162_zps1904198b.jpg

The GR-75 was able to escape off the table with little damage at all. The Rebels lost Biggs, but he was expected to be the one to draw the fire of the Imperials.

IMG_0163_zps66d15863.jpg

Second game ended up being redemption for my opponent. Not knowing what he would take, and wanting to try out a few of my new ships, I went with:
Dash Rendar w/ Chewbacca and Veteran Instincts
Wedge w/ Shield Upgrade

Tycho Celchu

I went up against:
Captain Oicunn w/ Ruthlessness, Mara Jade, Rebel Captive
Rear Admiral Chiraneau w/ Veteran Instincts and Tactician

Ouch, a double VT-49 Decimator list with 2 ships that love handing out stress and extra damage... and 0 defense value making Wedge's ability pretty much useless.

I stacked to one side of the board, trying to hopefully focus on one ship at a time as I had done the last time I faced a Decimator.

IMG_0164_zpsbdce48bc.jpg

I raced forward to try and take on Oicunn as quickly as possible.

IMG_0165_zps1e90c4d2.jpg

Tycho took the brunt of the fire from the Decimators, but managed to survive one round of firing.

IMG_0166_zps71790516.jpg

I just wasn't able to get any shots lined up with my starfighters, which cost me in the end.

IMG_0167_zps7835f453.jpg

IMG_0168_zps01c1b245.jpg

Wedge went down first.

IMG_0169_zps809ad239.jpg

Followed shortly by Tycho.

IMG_0170_zps9cd38f25.jpg

I ended up with 1 damage remaining on Dash, and found myself directly ahead of Oicunn towards the end of the game... And my opponent gleefully took advantage of it.

IMG_0173_zps855b4a21.jpg

In the end we had a lot of fun today. Wish I could get to the store on the first Saturday of the month, they have a tourney every month. Oh well!

I didn't realize you were adding more battle reports to your original post!

I loved the last two! Its so rare to see a transport obliterate so many ships!

The two decimators looked very good next to each other. I am was surprised how well they did. In theory the list has only 6 damage, but bump damage and all of the stress giving I guess really adds up!

Keep them coming!!!
