Possible new player? Game worth playing?

By Camx, in X-Wing

I was cruising the internet this morning and found an article here on the coolest Star Wars spaceships. http://thefilmbox.org/top-10/ten-coolest-star-wars-spaceships/

The website mentions the X-wing game, which I've see in stores before, but it really got my inner pilot thinking I should try this game? I was thinking I might ask the wife for this for Christmas but had some questions.

Is it expensive? I'd like to get a giant fleet of my own but the price for these ships seems steep. Do I need to build up both factions to play? It looks like it is. Is it hard to play? Does it take a long time? I used to play Battletech tons growing up but remember that game taking FOREVER to play. I never could do that now with my family around. Is there a lot of setup? The minis look pretty sweet. Are they high quality or like those cheap heroclix figures? And is it fun?

I'd like to know more before I make an investment in my time and money. I figure you all would know best. Thanks in advance.

Hell yes!

  • See the FFG tutorial to get a feel for the game
  • It's not expensive as other minis, you can presumably buy into a single faction, but you'll always want more!
  • The minis look great, feel great, no exceptions! Paintjobs are good, but what some people do with repainting goes above and beyond!
  • Incredible tournament experience! Easy to play, hard to master! A very high skill ceiling!
  • You can start with the core set, play around with it, buy in if you feel you like the game. Otherwise, it's self-contained, so you can play it on its own if you decide not to buy any further.
  • A lot of online resources, guides, VoDs, lists, forums etc.

First off, let me say that it's a really well made game. FFG is known for making really good board games and I've played a fair number of minaiture games. I'll say that this game is very well balanced, easy to learn, and a lot of fun to play. I played a demo game with a friend of mine and the next time I saw him, he had dropped $200 on the game! I've played a lot of games with people who have never played before and it's pretty easy for them to pick up. Almost all of them liked playing and about half of them have gotten sets to play on their own. It's also a game that you can play with people who don't usually play such games.

If you found a local game store that has people who play, I'm sure you could go and try it out. Most gamers are pretty nice and wouldn't mind letting you borrow the minis for a game against them. Well, most are nice. You always get the odd ball.

As for costs, it depends on a few things. What is considered expensive is one. I have played other mini games, such as Warhammer. Those games require you to spend $300+ to just get into the game. You can easily spend $100 and have enough to have fun. Warning, though, you will probably want to buy more. If you look at online stores, you will probably find better prices than your local game store. I do like to support them, though, as they give you a place to play.

Beyond that, you will probably want to build up both Empire and Rebels. Part of it is just due to the fact that certain cards come in certain ships. So, you will want to get all the neat toys. That, and it's easier to sucker other friends into playing when you own both sides. I think you could spend $100 and get into the game comfortably. You could do less, but you might be frustrated. Depends on where you buy your things (online or in store).

As for the quality, it's much better than Heroclicks. It's nice minis that are all pre-painted. You won't be disappointed.

Is it expensive? I'd like to get a giant fleet of my own but the price for these ships seems steep.

Not really. $15 for a ship expansion is pretty sweet, when every ship in the game is viable. (Except the TIE Advanced).

Do I need to build up both factions to play? It looks like it is.

If you've got other people to play with, no. If you're the only one you know with a collection, the variety would be appreciated. However, upgrades released in an expansion are not usually faction-specific, so having a wide range of ships also gives you a wide range of fleets.

Does it take a long time? I used to play Battletech tons growing up but remember that game taking FOREVER to play.

Depends on the size of fleets involved. Competitive 100 point games last 1-1.5 hours.

Is there a lot of setup? The minis look pretty sweet. Are they high quality or like those cheap heroclix figures? And is it fun?

Not really. If you have your fleet ready, and have a clear table, you're ready.

Yes they do :D

Amazing quality in my opinion.

And as for fun..... hell yeah.

First Camx, welcome!

The game is awesome! But keep in mind it is a skirmish level game for the most part (save for Epic which I will get into here shortly) so the most ships one side can have in the game is eight. I have seen lists as small as two ships. And there are so many variations along the way. And they keep adding new ships and new rules all the time, to keep the game every exciting!

The game takes about 60-75 minutes to play, longer when you are just getting started but it will speed up as you learn the rules.

The game is surer easy to pick up. The start set is $40 US, a fairing inexpensive starter when compared to other miniatures games. Each small ship is $15 and the large ships are $30 ($40 for the Decimator). So you really have control of how much or how little you want to spend.

If you do not want to build both Imperial and Rebels you do not have to, however some upgrades found in the ships are universal and only found in some ships. So you may find yourself buying a ship you do not intend to play just for the cards.

The rules are quite simple to pick up and you will have them down after your first game or two, however there is enough depth in the list building to allow for some great tactics and strategy. A lot of players liken this to Chess in that the rules are simple to pick up, difficult to master.

Setup is fairly easy, all you need is a 3ft by 3ft surface and the contents of the start set. No terrain or anything like that, although a space themed map helps for the ascetics.

The minis are without a doubt the highest level of pre-painted minis I have ever seen. Great plastics and if you like you CAN re-paint them, but there really is no need. They are what I would call 'tabletop quality' easy. This is also one of my favorite parts to this game, you crack open the blister, assemble your dial, and you are playing, right now. No take home, build, paint and play later. You are playing right away!

I hope this helps. If you have time for a podcast, I'd recommend our episode 1, it will give you an idea of what the game is like. Also, check out youtube for video battle reports. This will give you a good idea of what game play is like.

I would highly recommend finding a local group that plays and asking if you can give it a try on their regular game night. Most of us love getting new people into the game and would be happy to loan you some ships for an evening.

1: if there isn't a local group you're going to be bored.

2: you will 100% be hooked.

3: it is good to have some idea of how at least 1 ship moves before you start buying expansions.

If you tell us where you are in the world I bet someone on the forum can point you in the right direction.

The base game looks like just X-wings and Tie fighters. That sounds boring to me as I'd like to have a lot more ships. One more question then. If you ratchet up the number of ships does the game bog down and become unplayable?

Most standard games will have you field a 100 point squad with the game lasting close to an hour (maybe more when you're firing out the rules at the beginning). So while your squads will vary a lot, the game should not bog down (unless you try epic games which is a whole new ball game).

I'll add, as others have pointed out, that having a local gaming group makes the game much more enjoyable, so I would I would suggest investigating that in person before committing too much money. Unless of course if you're a Star Wars junkie, in which case you'll probably buy this stuff even if there's no one to play against ;)

The time it takes to finish a game increases exponentially with the number of ships. There are reports of 4-5 hour games, but those involve 30 ships on each side, and it is supposedly very enjoyable.

On the other hand, the tournament standard of 100 squad points (2-8 ships on each side) amounts to a reasonable 1h-1h30 game time.

First let me say it is my favorite game of all time. So yes it is worth playing.

More than any other table top minis game I have ever played, winning is more about how you play your list than what list you bring. The models are gorgeous, oh yeah and STAR WARS!

Is is expensive, yes and no. Compared to other table top minis games it is almost free. But that is comparing it to games like Warhammer. The starter set and each expansion set are very reasonably priced. You can get a very competitive list for as low as $70. (A starter+X-wing+B-wing expansions), but you will probably want at least two starters, it is the cheapest way to get ships and the extra templates and dice are nice too. You will probably want at least one of each expansion as well. But that is a matter of want rather than need. And you definitely don't need to buy it all at once.

So you could easily eventually spend

2 starters - $80

x-wing $15

y-Wing $15

B-Wing $15

HWK-290 $15

A-Wing $15

YT-1300 $15

Rebel Aces $30

TIE $15

TIE Advanced $15

TIE Interceptor $15

TIE Bomber $15

TIE Aces $15

Lambda Shuttle $30

Firespray $30

Total of $335

That sounds expensive, but you get one of everything currently released. You can play well before you have all this stuff. Compare this to the price of a Warhammer Fantasy army. a single horde of Bloodletters costs 5x$29 = $145 for one unit. Considering that would be about a fourth of a whole army Warhammer Fantasy costs roughly ten times as much to field a single army.

However the real cost of X-wing, much like any other hobby is... what ever you let it be. Let's face it we like out toys. We like buying more.

Yes, it's awesome. You don't need to buy many ships though, just lots of FIRESPRAYS!

FIRESPRAYS!!!!!!!!!!!!

The game is really worth it. Very fun.

As for expense, well... Once you go down the path of expansion, forever will it rule your wallet.

Well the you have to buy the corebox to get what you need to play (damage cards primarily unless you want to play imp or rep then you save some money, you can buy the ffg starwars dice app if you dislike rolling dice by hand)

Then if you want to build up to the 100 points, then you can either use a squadron builder (online, and proper ones tell you which upgrades come with which expansion) then buy what you need for that squad.

Or just buy what you want.

If your planning on being a scum and villany player (we have cake), you basicly buying from scratch the entire squad when it comes out.but scum and vilany seems more like an advanced faction so far.

But grats on your intrest

But as mentioned above, you need a group to play if yiu want to commit to the game

I'm not much of a miniatures gamer so I don't have much to give you in the way of comparison there, but this game feels an awful lot like playing my old X-Wing vs. Tie Fighter video game. I know that doesn't seem like a natural connection to make, but that's what it reminds me the most of. If you like those old LucasArts games, you may want to give this a run through.

If you ratchet up the number of ships does the game bog down and become unplayable?

Not that I've found.

But consider that with 100 point limit, you have at most 7-8 ships per side, and most games will have less. A typical game a total of 10 ships between both sides.

Epic games take the points to 300, so you can have upto 20+ ships per side. But even then the game doesn't really bog down, it takes longer to play just because you got more ships to move and dice to roll.

If cost is an issue then there are several online retailers that offer discounts. for ~$120 you can get a very good selection of ships to build a fleet with.

this game is an excellent game and (imho) much better than the other games that use the "flight path" system. The quality of the miniatures and the balance of the games units are top notch. The world championships JUST happened and had a pretty wide variety of successful builds. I cannot recommend this game enough.

if you want to let us know your general geographic area we can probably find you a game group to help you learn the basics.

Echoing this. Also, there are communities and groups everywhere that are very welcoming. A cursory search through the Organized Play page should be a good place to find games/groups in your area. Failing that, a search on Facebook will no doubt lead you to organized players in your area. If that fails, some good old fashioned walking into your local gaming store and asking around helps too. I've met some great people through this game and I hope you can do the same!

The X Wing forum's aren't the place to ask if you should play this game......

Keep in mind I LIKE this game here is the truth

to add some balance.

1) 3-5 ships isn't enough to play this game, while you only need typically 2-8 to actually have a legal 100pt game this game is META META META where a single card can totally change how fleets work and keeping that in mind it isn't cheap and to be competitive (FLAME SHIELD ON) you will need to buy most packs as many packs have unique upgrade cards that wont be replicated for a wave or two meaning you may need to buy a lot of ships you don't want to fly and even multiples if you need a card more than once!!!

2) This game is pointed at the tournament scene and from most games I have played it is thematically very dry compared to other mini's games. I feel like I am reliving the movies than I have my 'own' fleet (if that makes sense), this just maybe because they are generic paint jobs but there you go.

in conclusion it's a good game but it sure as hell isn't 'cheap' due to the way the rules are done.

Also have a look at Armada

You can

I was cruising the internet this morning and found an article here on the coolest Star Wars spaceships. http://thefilmbox.org/top-10/ten-coolest-star-wars-spaceships/

Is it expensive?

And is it fun?

Buy your minis at Miniature Market or like online retailers who sell them for less than retail price. Some people are even unloading their collections on eBay, so you might get a deal there too. NEVER EVER pay more than MSRP for any mini. They are not Magic cards. FFG doesn't do rares, uncommons, or any like bull. If you go to Amazon now, you'll see some chucklehead is charging over $50 for a Firespray. Laugh at him when, in perhaps a month, there are tons of Firepsrays to be had. Also, get yourself a Plano case or three to put all your ships and counters in. If I have one gripe about FFG games, it's the massive amounts of cardboard counters they have. Luckily, you can store them pretty easily in variety of ways.

As to your second question, that's relative. Do you like easy, fast miniatures games? Do you hate rules lawyers? Do you like tiny ships and the pushing of said tiny ships around? If you answered "yes" to all 3, you'll probably like this game.

Do you like massive rulebooks with pages of things you could never memorize and arguing about said things endlessly, killing any enjoyment of the game? Do you like to have to be forced to purchase hundreds and hundreds of overpriced, badly sculpted minis? Do you like rolling massive fistloads of dice and then arguing the results for hours? If you answered "yes" to all 3, then you will hate X-Wing.

Isn't coming to the FFG X-Wing forums and asking whether you should play X-Wing kind of like going to a bar and asking whether or not you should have a beer?

More like going to a brewery with that second question.
My local barman would say "Hell no", and pour you a scotch.

Yes the games loads of fun, its deeper than it may seem at first glance offering a wide range of play styles and for a miniature game its quite cheap to get into.

Should you try it? - Given you have interest enough to sign up here, the answer is a definite yes :) Welcome to the forum by the way!

Is it expensive? - Depends how well you can keep control of your own spending. Some people have more than enough fun with a selection of expansions. Others have all expansions multiple times. You could, for instance, start with some fighter-size models only. If you are a die hard star wars fan you probably buy the millenium falcon anyway ;)

Do you need to build up both factions? Not necessarily, but it is fun to have some of each (and the 3rd faction in the future....)

Hard to play? With each new expansion the learning curve becomes steeper, especially if you buy it all at once and find yourself surrounded with miniatures and cards.

The time you need is around an hour, in the beginning a bit more. Setting up is also depending on how you stored it, but the more variety of ships, the longer it takes. But not by much.

Fun to play? I lost 7 games in a row. I got beaten, trounced, and annihalited. And then decided to buy it :D

Isn't coming to the FFG X-Wing forums and asking whether you should play X-Wing kind of like going to a bar and asking whether or not you should have a beer?

Yes! But like all the people at the bar, we are happy to help! :)

One warning though:

1ad61d7dbddbc698c2fe6a264ab65dda.jpg

What are some of the better expansions to ask Santa for beyond the core set? If I wanted to balance out factions but also have the best experience? Wish I knew somebody who played? I really want to try this game out now.
