Soak and Minion Groups

By Rationalinsanity, in Game Masters

So I've been running this system for a few months but I've got a question about how soak works with it is interacting with minion groups. Does the soak only apply to the attack or is it applied to each minion in the group? I assumed it was the former but I'm not totally sure.

Take the example of a pair of Stormtroopers in a group. Assuming Pierce/Breach are not in play, these fellows have 5 soak and 5 wounds. Therefore it takes 10 damage on an attack to kill one in single shot. But say a player manages to deal 15 damage, does that 5 damage go onto the other trooper, killing him or does it bounce off his soak?

I assume it's the former, as it really makes qualities like Autofire and Blast effective against groups, which is exactly what those weapons are intended to do. On the other hand it does make minions a little bit hardy, especially well armored ones.

Thanks in advance.

They soak once per attack (Actually per hit!), no matter how much damage is dealt.

If a PC attacks a few stormtroopers and deal 15 dmg.

The stormtroopers soak 5, leaving 10 wounds to apply.

1 stormtrooper goes down on the attack becouse it is above their 5 in wound threshold, both not above WT * 2.

(you need to get above the threshold to be knocked out/killed)

However, autofire is multiple hits and therefore soak is applied with every attack.

say 3 autofire hits with each 10 dmg, so minus soak on each hit equals 15 damage, enough to kill 2 stormtroopers but not enough to finish of the third.

Nice to know, I guess I was doing it wrong. It did make armored Minions rather tough to kill without heavy weapons.

This also makes blasting squads of TIEs much easier as well.

And I wasn't aware that you didn't die (minions/rivals) or get incapacitated (nemeses/PCs) until you hit -1 wounds. So you are still standing at exactly 0 WT?

Yes... in the way you mean anyway...

It's a Threshold, not hitpoints. Goes up not down. So 0/12WT means you're totally 100% fine. 12/12 means your luck is about to run out and the next hit is gonna KO you and inflict a crit.

Ghostofman answers this really good.

But also, minions don't necessary die when they exceed their wound threshold. They are in some way taken out of the fight, be it incapacitated, knocked out, fleeing, dead etc. It depends only on the narrative context.

So the minions could die if that is appropriate to the scene or something completely else.
