Monster's Hoard Second Half - Reinforcements

By MrMOSFET, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

This is a minor question, I think we played it correctly but, to me, there is some ambiguity. For reinforcements, the quest log read:

At the start of each overlord turn, he may place 1 goblin archer on any glyph of transport not currently occupied by a figure, respecing group limits.

That meas 1 total correct? Because it's not completely unreasonable to interpret this to mean 1 goblin archer for each unoccupied glyph.

eg: "On any glyph not currently occupied, place 1 goblin archer"

When we played, we did one goblin total.

Thanks guys

"...on any glyph..." Would be one archer of your chosen location.

"...on each glyph..." Would be multiple archers up to group limit.

So it sounds like you made the right choice only placing one archer.

That's certainly how I interpreted it upon first reading. However, I think there's still a bit of amiguity. I think you could reasonably conclude that it means - On any glyph of transport not currently occupied by a figure, he may place 1 goblin.

Running around with one new goblin/turn was a bit of a bore after the heroes smashed 1 open group before my first turn! :)

The OL may place 1 goblin archer on any glyph. Not goblin archers up to the group limit, on any glyph.

It depends on where you place the emphesis in the sentence. I don't tend to be so nit-picky but there are other examples from this game that led me to question the intent

eg: When immobilized you may not perform a move action or suffer fatigue to move BUT you CAN "move x spaces" if an ability says so!

If you replace "1" with "a", the meaning of the sentence is entirely different. Hence the query. It sounds like most people read it the same way - placing emphasis on 1 goblin rather than "on any glyph that is not currently occupied".

I think any glyph does not equal every glyph.

If I walk into a room with 3 six packs of beer- an IPA, a Hefeweizen, and a Brown, and I say, "You can have 1 beer from any of these cases but the IPA," I didn't just tell you to help yourself to 2 beers, I told you to help yourself to 1. I think it's the same with the goblin archers. You can reinforce 1, and you can place that one on any of the glyphs which meet the requirement "empty."

Heh - I think that analogy might be a stretch! I'd say it'd more akin to saying:

"Please take one beer from any case that is not empty" =)

Now, I would generally assume that I could have 1 beer from any one case. If I was feeling like a jerk, I would say - "you said I could take 1 beer from any case that isn't empty. There are three cases that aren't empty and thus I can have 3 beers".

I don't actually disagree but I think it's poorly written and from other fiddly rules (eg: move action vs move X being treated differently for immobilize), I figured it was worth confirming.

Thank you all for your indulgence :)

PS: Zaltyre, you can ship that beer to me whenever you have a spare moment. I'll take a Hefeweizen. Much obliged!

Just where do you live? I need to hang out with you a lot more if you regularly walk around with IPA, Hefeweizen, and Brown. :P

And me being me (loving beer), I wouldn't settle for just one. In fact, I may just make a pig of myself.

I must admit, I don't usually walk around with that much beer- however, our last campaign got into a pretty good groove- there were 4 of us total (one guy controlled 2 heroes) and the informal arrangement was that 2 of the heroes (a couple) brought pizza, and the other hero and the OL brought a 6 pack each. It worked out quite nicely for evening games.
