Ironman tournament

By tk426, in X-Wing

So I've been asked to run a event and the shop owner has asked that I hold this scenario.

IRONMAN

You build a squad of 250 pts total.

Round 1. Of the 250 pts you gather 100 pts of it and that is your starting squad. Anything that gets damaged does not start fresh in second round, it keeps any damage it received from previous round. And anything that gets destroyed is out for the rest of the event.

Round 2. Of the 150 remaining points you may replace any part of your squad. Not exceeding a total squad build of 100 pts.

Round 3. With any remaining points you have left from your original 250pt pool of ships you may add to your squad if needed to replace any ships that got destroyed from previous rounds.

Your initial 250 pt squad must adhere to normal squad building rules.

I think this sounds like a fun event. Has anyone ever played something like this or have any suggestions that they could see being a problem. The game will be held on December 6 so I need some quick input before I post anything. Thanks

Regeneration is amazing in this format.
Also, anything that prevents your ships from taking damage, while dealing massive damage to your enemy.

So, Astromechs and Phantoms

Tie Swarm could do very well here. With room for up to 20 (!) TIEs, it will be easy to replace any losses you sustain.

Sounds fun, but I could see the importance of making sure the list builders have appropriate sub for each ship in the first squad so you can keep the totals close. For example say Round 1 the player only lost an Academy Pilot but has no other 12 point ship to replace now its a damaged 88 vs 100(with possibly fresh ships) pts , another way around this is allow upgrades to be added to existing ships if the player chooses so then it hits 100 or close enough. Otherwise Round 1 can snowball and cost you.

Corran would rock this. He is THE ironman of x-wing.

I say try it out exactly as you have it right now. Make sure all of the participants know that this is the first time this sort of event has been run, and that there may be unforeseen hitches. See how the event plays out, hope that everybody had fun, and report back. Personally I think it sounds like a neat idea.

I love it, puts even more of a bullseye on the aces.

My immediate concern is, like Dracon mentions, regeneration. I could very easily see a situation in this format where someone reduces their opponent to all but one damaged ship and then flies around for a few turns with his R2-D2 ship regenerating shields and taking actions to flip certain crits over so that they are as healed as possible for the next game.

That's not Ironman! :)

Have you seen Magic the Gathering Ironman tournaments? When a card goes to the graveyard, it gets ripped up!

A true X-Wing Ironman tournament would be ripping up the pilot cards and smashing the ships when they get destroyed!

I saw people do a Star Trek CCG Ironman event...one guy went out of his way to use, and lose, ultra rares and popular rares. The looks on some people's faces when those cards hit the shredders...lol

I still say the best Ironman was with battletech minis, blow torches, meat tenderizer hammers and saws. Your idea seems like fun though.

1. Allow a point buffer for rounds 2 and 3 to fit in another ship. +3 points. Example: you loose a prototype awing, 17 pts. Your next closest ship point wise is a green squadron a-wing at 19pts. This would put you over by 2 pts but not hinder you by playing down 17.

2. You may have to sacrifice a heathy ship to pull in other pilots into your rooster to make the points work. Fluff wise this sounds good. Kind of like your pilots realize they are not needed for a mission so they get sidelined.

3. Allow upgrade cards to be pulled off ships coming into the game so they may fit into the squad.

This! Smash and burn any ships and cards destroyed, that's proper Iron Man!

You are all insane. Noone will be feeding my ships or cards to any destructive device, or there will be another sort of tournament, more along the lines of 2 men enter, one man leaves. Who in their right mind enters a tournament knowing they will most likely lose some of their ships / cards?

An IRONMAN :D

Not me, for certain! I nearly vomited from shock when I read the first comment describing this.

Paws off my babies!

This event will have nothing to do with the actual destruction or tearing up of cards or ships. You guys are funny.

Then its not a proper Ironman event

When someone mentions a IRONMAN tournament the first thing that comes to mind would be some sort of a endurance competition. Not something along the lines of "what I kill you have to physically destroy"

My google foo has failed me and I can't seem to find anything in reference to what you people are talking about.

On a side note. I live in madison Wisconsin and the city hosts a annual IRONMAN triathlon. That why I have the mindset that I do.

If you want to destroy the ships and materials (this would certainly sour more sales for FFG) then call it a demolition tournament.

Iron Man tournament would be more of a single elimination tournament. You keep paying until you lose, one loss and you are eliminated.

If I show up in say....Hulkbuster Armor do I automatically win lol
