Auto bumping your own ships. Good or Bad for the game?

By The_Brown_Bomber, in X-Wing

I find it a bit disturbing that people are actually defending this non-sense, regardless of if its "legal" or not.

100%. You can find it legal, you can find it smart, you can even somehow find it justified. All of those things, and I either admit you're right or I shrug and can't really argue. But I simply can't see how anybody can find that it doesn't violate the spirit of the game or sportsmanship. (And, for the record, I like Richard. But this was bad sportsmanship.) It says a lot about the folks defending it, I think.

Hey guys. The Imperial Player here. Just a few things to clear things up.

I didn't force the issue or call a judge, I simply flew around for 70 minutes waiting for him to come out because I had initiative.

Yes it was annoying.

Yes it was a decent strategy.

Yes it was bad sportsmanship.

Yes I was extremely upset afterwards. In the Final Round I rolled 7 blanks and my single TiE was destroyed. He jumped and cheered like it was a big achievement and then wanted to shake my hand.

Yes i'm rooming with him, which makes things even more awkward.

Yes i've heard talk that FFG is going to sit down and decide whether or not this should be errata-ed

It was definitely uncool to make me fly around by myself for 70 min while he sat back and relaxed.

Ask me whatever

Edit: i ask this to see if from the players viewpoint it may start tactics looking to utilise this or if it just happened to work in this one game due to the "novelty factor"

"Sportsmanship (or sometimes sportspersonship) is an aspiration or ethos that a sport or activity will be enjoyed for its own sake, with proper consideration for fairness, ethics, respect, and a sense of fellowship with one's competitors."

That's not how Merriam-Webster defines it.

Based on your deffention if someone bases enjoyment on winning then the only sporting thing to do is to throw the game.

Sigh. Nothing was broken...nothing was bent...

Nothing in your definition was violated. Quite the opposite in fact. Hsu's unorthodox maneuver was in perfect keeping with the ethos of sportsmanship. In fact, offering to shake hands after a match is sportsmanlike. Crying about a loss afterward is not. His opponent had 70 minutes to crack the formation. A formation with zero defensive modifications. He failed to do so and Hsu pounced at the end.

I don't think anyone is saying that it wasn't a crappy game. It was. I feel bad for who had to play against it.

Where we disagree is how much of a problem it is.

This tournament was a really big deal to me, and to just get cheesed out like that, by a friend, just crushed me. Obviously you don't see it the same way, but that's okay. Everyone has their own opinion.

Load the Assault Missiles in the tube and don't forget to set laser cannons to Ruthlessness. The Rebel Scum has never made their end more inevitable than before. This will be like SHOOTING FISH IN A BARREL! :D (p.s. bonus points for each bomb token dropped right next to them.)

AGAIN: how does this advice help when you've already chosen your list? Or are you advocating that everyone now take Imperial ships with Missile slots, on the offchance that someone's going to be a ****?

Sportsmanship is essentially a mutual agreement between competitors to not be assholes jerks to one another, win, lose or draw. Simple as that.

You didn't deserve to have your final game play out like that. Here's hoping these exploits don't become a trend, for the good of the game.

How was Hsu a jerk for playing the game in accordance with the rules? No one has said that he acted especially rude or objectionable during the match. Even by your definition, he was not unsportsmanlike in his conduct.

Why didn't you just stay in the opposite corner and win with initiative?

How was Hsu a jerk for playing the game in accordance with the rules?

Anyway, sorry for the loss and I hope FFG gives a ruling soon.

When was either player not playing X wing? Just because one or the other chooses not play it the way you would does not make it unsportsmanlike.

That tactic is fantastic! Against Phantoms its fully justified! :)

Truth

"Have you played against this tactic before? And do you think that in a similar situation again (same lists etc) there was a way you could attack the fortress successfully? It certainly is a divisive issue.

I've never played against it before no. Attacking it successfully would be all down to dice (if I could burst it down in 1/2 turns) After I approach it, there's nowhere for me to turn except off the board or into the asteroid field.

"I think it was a disgraceful performance... I think it should never be allowed to happen again... one of the worst things I have ever seen done on a cricket field".

Commentator at the infamous game.

Just because its not against the rules doesnt make it ok.

Should this be allowed to happen again?

Is it an effective tactic though? If your opponent slow rolls it down the right flank at you they will get 2-3 turns of focused fire with all their actions while you get no actions (except from Cracken maybe) and one ship with no arc. I don't like those odds. You are going to have lost half your ships before the other guy has to disengage, and then if they hard 3 it, followed by 4 k-turns they are only missing shots one round and should finish what remains before having to disengage again.

All you need to do is pop the rookie facing to the side to break it open, but if it was me I'd be happy to leave him there and kill Cracken and Wedge on the first pass.

Fortess Falcons were and are not effective for the same reasons and I'm not sure this is either.

From the reviews it sounds like he DID attack the fortress successfully and just got screwed by really bad dice rolls. Yes, the tactic is annoying to play against, but if the only way for the fortress to win is for the other guy to roll 7 blanks in a row then I don't think it breaks the game or needs fixing.

Look at the deployment. The X-Wings have the approach covered, and if Biggs is present, yegads. If you try to engage, even if you slow roll in you will still have to turn away and disengage or you'll end up putting yourself in the position of flying off the board.

As soon as you disengage, your opponent is free to fly after you and shoot you in the rear, with actions, and it will be at least a turn or two before you can get shots back on them again.

Bottom line, if you've got less hitpoints than your opponent, trying to engage puts you in a no-win scenario.

It's not effective especially when you have initiative and will auto win. I'd just sit back in the opposite corner and say come at me bro.

That sounds like a really exciting and fun 60 minutes of gaming for everyone concerned.

Stall for 59 mins and snipe a Tie, just the way FFG intended...
