Using SCPs as Plot Hooks

By ThenDoctor, in Dark Heresy General Discussion

So recently I've heard about SCPs

Link to the wiki detailing them:

Essentially it's a collection of supernatural entities and items of varying lethality. It reminded me heavily of that ripoff of Warehouse 13 from DH1, but just so utterly more dangerous.

Has anyone ever used these in games? I haven't read a lot of them, does it even sound feasible. Seemed like a useful resource for inspiration regardless.

Yeah, I actually have used these as a central element once or twice before. At the very least I used SCP-1294 "Laughing Fox" as an antagonist for Call of Cthulhu: Delta Green. It was an adventure where the DG organization had isolated the one and only permanent habitation ground of that creature and wanted to exterminate it. I found out that players NEED to be informed a little bit about SCP's before hand. That or my players weren't very good.

Anyway, there are some SCP's which would be perfect in any rpg (and some especially good for Dark Heresy that I was tempted to bring into our PbP). Sometimes you might find that the whole [Redacted] thing gets extremely lame on that website, though (it's basically a way of adding mystery without having to actually make a mystery). For gaming purposes, ignore 173 and 682: They may be some of the most highly regarded articles, and for good reason, but they are insanely hard to put into a game properly. You can try them out, but yeah... Expect lots of TPK.

610, 439, 1006 if you like comedy, and 432. Generally work with SCP's that can be interacted with, are mysterious, yet can also be "solved". You know, stuff that is scary yet also capable of being rendered harmless or ultimately fully explored.

First of all, thank you for bringing this website to my attention.

As to your question and based on the few that I skimmed over; yes, I definitely think that there's Dark Heresy inspiration to be found in there (though it might take a little digging).

I also run a World of Darkness campaign, so this is just a gold mine for me (even more so than my girlfriend's nightmares; seriously, that girl's mind comes up with some scary *%#).

Seems like the best way to go would be having the acolytes be the ones being used by an inquisitor to investigate some kind of weird SCP phenomena. Do you have some SPCs that you think would be thematic or work well, ThenDoctor?

Not really haven't had time to look through the list recently. I mean the more dangerous entities could be used for a horror game. Some of them scream daemonhost.

SCP-1139 (the Broken Tongue) would, with some modification, make an interesting Xeno artifact.

I think doing some of the weird environments and having players explore them would be pretty cool. Like that bad with the giant cannon and all the pipes, or that village in Russia overrun with some weird skin disease.
