Not at Worlds, so I'm home list crafting tonight

By ExpatSmuggler, in X-Wing

Got some local tournaments coming up and from listening to podcasts and playing around with some ships and lists that I personally like I've come up with two lists that I like and can't decide between:

A Very Quiet Swarm:

5x Academy TIE's

Whisper+ACD+VI+Rebel Captive

100pts

This is your basic Phantom list, but I really like the 5 ship mini-swarm for anti-Falcon and more importantly, in a mirror match against another Phantom they become superb decloak blockers for board control. Basically it's a mash up of two things I enjoy flying, swarms and Phantoms.

- or -

Rebel Board Control:

2x Blue Squadron's+Ion Cannon

Gold Squadron+Ion Turret+R3-A2

Roark+Ion Turret+Nien Nunb (Just had a point left over and figured what do I need to PS bid for?)

Versions of this list have bounced around Team Covenant for a little while now, but this is the one that I particularly like. The 3x Blue's version has shown up at World's, and there's also the 2x Gold's version. Both of those are tankier, but I really like Roark boosting either the Gold or one of the B-Wings to PS12 against Phantoms.

Which list looks better to y'all? What weaknesses do you see?

Your second list is easy to hit and low on damage. It makes you equally susceptible to control.

I think you can get an extra tie in that first list, I may be having a brain fart but that looms like 88 points to me

Oops yup, meant to type "5x" that was a typo. Fixed now.

When the Roark lists have a good alpha round they immediately go up in success. When you have a middling engagement round or a bad one it becomes an uphill battle fast.

Your Rebel list has too many Ion cannons. When you include more than one your damage will suffer too much, especially against squads that outnumber you. I'd give the B's Advanced Sensors, switch the Y to a Rookie with R3A2 and put a Hull Upgrade on Roark at the cost of Nien Nunb. This way you still have a lot of control over your opponent's most dangerous ship but you don't break the bank on Ion Cannons you shouldn't use every turn. AS and Roark give you a lot of control over your own ships, add to that the control you have over your opponent with the ICT and R3A2 and it will be very hard for your opponent to outmaneuver you squad.

I've played that list a lot and it is very competitive. The B's counter Han and (PS1) Swarms, the HWK and X screw over any phantoms that get in Arc.

Your Imperial list is a tried and tested powerhouse with no real weaknesses. Double Phantom cheesfest can hurt you though.

I feel the ion list is alright, so long as the Bwings fire last. That way, if your target is already ionized, you hammer away with standard weapons. If your target is NOT ionized, you go for the ions with your Bs. I flown a BBYY 4x ions list quite frequently for a period of time, and the firepower is there. Granted, I had FCS on my Bwings and I tried to range 1 my opponents using my Ywings whenever possible, so the damage output is comparatively alright against other lists

that said, I would go with the Whisper list, no question asked. ACD phantoms are sickeningly strong, it is possible for a single phantom to completely wipe away 100pt squads.

Drop the Ion Cannons on the B-Wings for E2+Tactician. Better damage (assuming you would've actually used their Ion Cannons of course, but that's 6 points wasted if you don't) and you can stress + ionize up to 2 targets per turn.

The one problem with your Whisper list is that it is 100pts. Initiative bid is one of the most important aspects to a good Phantom list, so I would drop the Rebel Captive for something else, probably FCS. Captive is only useful when you get shot, and the point of Phantoms and particularly Phantoms with a bid is to not get shot.
