Magpie build (aka the Thief Hawk)

By Marinealver, in X-Wing

Thought this would be good for the L :lol:Ls as a S&V play.

Palob Godhal

Moldy Crow Title

Outlaw Tech (So I can still get focus tokens)

Blaster Turret.

Veteran Instincts (to make staling focus easier.)

and because it is scum

Hot-shot blaster (save a stolen focus token)

munitions fialsafe keeps from wiffing on hot-shot blaster

Now I know some people are thinking I should just Recon spec as a battery but the thing is Palob can gain allot of focus that is if players will risk focusing near him. However with the moldy crow title he can store focus so I don't see him being focus starve with both blaster turret and saboteur.

So what would you do with this, or go ahead and tell me what will counter this (it wouldn't be too difficult to shut this down)

That's right. You do not need Recon Specialist.

But everyone will tell you that for some inane reason, The Moldy Crow needs it.

But it absolutely does not.

The problem is not so much that you need RecSpec, but that it's significantly more synergistic with moldy Crow as well as being much more reliable than saboteur.

Saboteur on the other hand has these drawbacks:

Requires your action when it matters (unlike Recspec + M. Crow where you can fill up on the first few turns) so bumping removes your ability to use the ability, paired with the fact that the HWK flies like a brick.

Range 1 only, so you have to not bump and still be range 1 to use it.

It only works half the time, you have a 4/8 chance that when you activate it, it will actually trigger.

The target ship has to have at least 1 damage card on it, so against imps it's fine but against rebels it's much less reliable.

A lot of the time even if you get it to work, the crit flipped up won't actually have an effect, dropping EPTs and abilities on generic, dropping secondary weapons etc.

It costs only 1 point less than Rec Spec, even if the cost was reduced 1 point I don’t believe Saboteur is a viable option.

It's up to you but there is a reason that Saboteur is one of, if not the least played Crew cards currently available. Even if it got a slight tweak to be a bit lie Mareeke Steele where you get to look at the crits and decide which one you want I still don’t think it would be worth it.

I think that FFG have come to realise that upgrade cards that consume your action for the turn need to be very good to actually see any play, which is why upgrades that offer Action-like effects without consuming your action are so powerful (Predator, Gunner, FCS etc.)

You're right sabatour takes actions, I'm getting it mixed up with Rexlar Brath's ability which requires you to spend focus to flip cards face up.

With Palob ability I can strip focus from my opponent as well as make the focus action. I see having 20+ focus tokens seems a little excessive. So I am looking at crew cards that might enhance focus stealing.

So with this I can still focus on my first turn letting me keep it and then keep focusing and stealing focus tokens until I can do some damage with the blaster turret. I guess I could use Outlaw tech to keep a consistent focus generation. HWK's do have a lot of red maneuvers.

What about everyones favorite EPT: Opportunist?

It does put them in sort of a catch 22. I still think the added pilot skill would be a benefit because any enemy ships that get close to him after he moves will forgo the focus/evade action. Heck I can see a TL just to see if they can get a quick guess on what is range 2 of him so they know where not to focus/evade. If you out skill them you can move within range 1-2 of another ship after they performed their focus/evade action. It is sort of like not spending that evade token to cancel the last hit from a ship with gunner/luke. IF they see it coming they won't perform any focus or actions from it.

But I'm surprised no one mention anything about Jax. I'm sure he wouldn't mind if you stole tokens.

Its fine, until your opponents stop focusing at range 1-2. Then you have a massive point sink in a 1 attack ship

Does hotshot blaster count as a secondary weapon even if it's an illicit upgrade? If so that's the best use of munitions failsafe ever.

It is an upgrade with the "Attack" header, so yes.

Also, you can fit this in a fleet 6 times, using binayre pirates.

Very very nice.

I was personally thinking Opportunist paired with the K4 Security Droid: you move at a green for the next turn to get rid of stress while also gaining a Target Lock. This gives you the ability to not only ABUSE somebody with Opportunist, but also steal more tokens if possible. This, in turn, allows you to either make targets of enemy ships that are in arc of the rest of your squad.

The only issue with this is of course the total of four green moves on a ship that is now made somewhat predictable, and is at 5 pilot skill. And only has five health. If you have lots of Focus on you, not really an issue, but you're paying a lot of points to use something that might be only semi-effective. But hey, worth a shot!
