I was looking to up my gamer cred and bought 2 750 ml crown royal bags on ebay for $4.99 (with free shipping). They came today but were coarse purple fabric. I thought they were supposed to be velvety, see below. Is this a question of different bag sizes being made out of different materials (these were considerably larger than I was expecting, so maybe they had to make it out of a tougher fabric to hold a larger bottle)? Did crown royal switch to different materials to cut costs? Can anyone offer an explanation?

It has been a long time since I have used a Crown Royal bag for a dice bag. Really I would have spent a few bucks more for a Star Wars bag for credibility. For practicality a zip lock would work and would have been way cheaper in the long run.

Mine have always been velvety like in the picture above. But, it's been quite a while since I picked up a new one. You bought on ebay. It could have been scammish?

Which you can then put in a really big bag . I don't see the problem here.

Having never used (touched, or even seen, really) a Crown Royal bag, I can't verify whether or not it's the genuine article. I could believe they decided to cut costs and make bags of a lower quality, but I could also believe that you got an eBay dud. The former strikes be as a little more likely, though.

I would bet money there is still a bag wrapped around the bottle inside the box. The Crown Royal website has a page detailing the tradition of their bags which states, "50 million velvet bags" are stitched each year. It may not be purple depending on the type of Crown Royal, but you are getting a velvet bag with each bottle.

In my opinion, the OP didn't get the bag that comes with the bottle. He got a knock off or some other Crown Royal bag, not the velvet one that comes with every bottle.

A friend of mine has both a dice bag and a cat. Due to his cat shedding excessive amounts of hair, and said hair getting everywhere and sticking to various objects, we have occasionaly been forced to refer to his dice bag as "his hairy sack".

I wouldn't say they're velvety. It's a smoother material than velvet. I have two of the Black bags from Crown Royals 'Black' Label. They look pretty good.

Speaking of strange dice bags, what's the strangest bag you've seen? I had a friend who had a dice bag made from a bull's 'sack' - it was very barbaric-looking...

I know a guy that uses a Crown Royal bag for his non-Star Wars dice, and it's not coarse at all. (Quite soft, in fact.) Would it be possible for you to post a picture of yours? Maybe those of us that are more familiar with the genuine article could determine if yours looks the way its supposed to.

My wife makes my dice bags. They're pretty awesome.

my kitty died July 15 this year (2014), she was 19 years, 3.5 months old. (I got her as a 2 week old kitten in April 1995) I miss my fur ball.

Money isn't the obstacle, in the last month I've spent $133 on new wotc star wars minis (I've probably spent $400 on minis over the years). $22 on maps that I've printed at office max, probably the same in ink for maps that I have printed on my personal printer (office max is definitely cheaper), and $54 in map tiles from Christopher west (maps of mastery). Not to mention snacks that I bring to the games. I'm paid well for my day job (that took a PhD to get).

But crown royal bags have been a gaming tradition since at least 1992 (a friend of mine in high school had mentioned them at that time), and I had heard about them over the Internet off and on since then as being the cult classic among gamers. Since I am paid well now, and just got a bonus for a job well done, I figured that I'd reward myself by upping my general gamer cred (not star wars cred, which isn't in question)

If you’re well paid, then you could afford to go down to a local liquor store (one of the better ones), and buy the real deal that comes with the good quality bags you want, then bring the liquid entertainment to the game — along with your new dice bag.

Just sayin’.
