Two-Handed/Player Lament and Request

By Boronind, in Strategy and deck-building

I'm rather dedicated to playing either two-handed/deck solo or two player for a variety of reasons that I won't elaborate here. However, I'm not much a deck builder for a variety of reasons I won't bore you with.

I've noticed that all of the most excellent decks (PsychoRocka almost the single exceptional exception) posted here and elsewhere are exclusively solo. I lament this as I am rather dependent upon the community for dual deck lists and I don't think I can just throw two solo decks together; in my experience there needs to be some if not a lot of synergy between them if you want a Frodo's prayer of beating a quest.

Thus, I am putting out a call/request for all the great LotR LCG deck architects to either design and/or post decks, especially as new AP/Expansions/Sagas come out for those of us who hunger for them. I realize this makes me a bit of leech, but consider it a terrific opportunity not just to help people like me in need but to show how the game shines in its two player glory.

I thank those in advance willing to hear my lament and respond to the call

Those two articles by Beorn have decks created specifically to be played with each other. They both look pretty impressive and fun to play. Beorn is pretty great at what he does =) He does mention they aren't designed to be powerhouses and are more about having fun.

If you give me a rough guideline of what sort of decks you want to play with (or perhaps a couple of heroes or traits you want to use) I could have a shot at designing some for you in my spare time?

There is also these two decks on talesfromthecards which look like they work well together and are quite powerful

Friends don't let friends play outlands however so up to you about this one :P

I think I remember an article Raven1015 wrote on talesfromthecards that mentions that he actually mainly plays two handed himself so he may have some great decks he plays with but has not posted and might be willing to share those with you?

(All credit goes to Beorn and Raven1015 who created those blogs and decks and are invaluable assets to our community, I'm merely posting them here to help out)

Oh also a couple of other people posted their two handed decks on my two handed decks thread, it isn't just mine on there if you haven't already noticed =)

I just posted a 2 handed deck on the main forum page.

Just a shout out at all those have posted their decks/links! This should keep people like me busy. But don't let this thread die! Feel free to create more decks from the most recent card base and post them for all to see and use!

Here they are, as requested. Since there has been very little time for anything lately, playing included, these do not contain newest cards. The base idea behind them was having fun with mono tactics and it was pretty much fullfilled. By no means they shall be considered power decks or optimal usage decks, but they're able to beat Nightmare JaTA on pretty consistent basis (and survive three to four rounds of Nightmare Dol Guldur), so they're pretty usable, I think.

Mono Tactics

Hero: (3)
1x Beregond (Heirs of Numenor)
1x Legolas (Core Set)
1x Bard the Bowman (On the Doorstep)

Ally: (14)
3x Eagles of the Misty Mountains (Return to Mirkwood)
2x Bofur (Over Hill and Under Hill)
3x Vassal of the Windlord (The Dead Marshes)
3x Winged Guardian (The Hunt for Gollum)
3x Envoy of Pelargir (Heirs of Numenor)

Attachment: (21)
1x Black Arrow (On the Doorstep)
3x Gondorian Shield (The Steward's Fear)
2x Horn of Gondor (Core Set)
3x Rivendell Blade (Road to Rivendell)
3x Rohan Warhorse (The Voice of Isengard)
3x Spear of the Citadel (Heirs of Numenor)
3x Support of the Eagles (Return to Mirkwood)
3x Dagger of Westernesse (The Black Riders)

Event: (15)
3x Behind Strong Walls (Heirs of Numenor)
3x Feint (Core Set)
3x Foe-hammer (Over Hill and Under Hill)
3x The Eagles Are Coming! (The Hunt for Gollum)
3x Hands Upon the Bow (Shadow and Flame)

Tri-sphere Support Deck

Hero: (3)
1x Balin (On the Doorstep)
1x Elrond (Shadow and Flame)
1x Glorfindel (Foundations of Stone)

Ally: (22)
2x Arwen Undomiel (The Watcher in the Water)
2x Erestor (The Long Dark)
2x Faramir (Core Set)
3x Gandalf (Core Set)
2x Gildor Inglorion (The Hills of Emyn Muil)
3x Imladris Stargazer (Foundations of Stone)
3x Master of the Forge (Shadow and Flame)
2x Northern Tracker (Core Set)
3x Warden of Healing (The Long Dark)

Attachment: (16)
2x Asfaloth (Foundations of Stone)
3x Light of Valinor (Foundations of Stone)
3x Steward of Gondor (Core Set)
3x Unexpected Courage (Core Set)
3x Vilya (Shadow and Flame)
2x King Under the Mountain (On the Doorstep)

Event: (15)
3x A Test of Will (Core Set)
3x Hasty Stroke (Core Set)
3x Sneak Attack (Core Set)
3x The Galadhrim's Greeting (Core Set)
3x Elrond's Counsel (The Watcher in the Water)

Interesting hero lineups. I had something similar that I made when Heirs of Numenor came out (when I first started the game) and I played that pair of decks all the way through the first two cycles.

In the Combat deck I had Prince of Imrahil instead of Bard, and in the Quest deck I had Frodo instead of Balin. They were pretty nice. I kinda want to get back to them and update them and keep playing through the rest of the quests, but I have so many other decks I want to try out.

Bumping this up for the purposes of inspiring new threads with two handed decks that take all the new content/cards into account. I still find this an unmet need in the community (special shout to PsychoRocka, but we need more like him!) Feel free to create new threads that fulfill the desires of those us who can't/won't design decks for 2 player/handed but still love to play them!

Many of the decks posted in this section are really two player decks. They aren't necessarily designed with high multi-deck synergy however.

I don't understand your post Bullroarer. Do you mean they aren't designed to work well in 3 to 4 player games if additional decks/players are added cause I would agree that most of them are specifically designed for them to be the only two decks being used in a game and would not work very well in 3 or 4 player. Very true.

I also don't understand your statement that many of the decks are actually two player decks. Two player and two handed are more or less completely interchangeable. Either way it is two decks designed to compliment and work well with each other whether they are being played by two different individuals or one.

Pretty sure he means that many of the decks posted were built in the expectation that they'd be played in two player (so they're two player decks) but they're not built alongside a specific second deck with deliberate synergies between the two.

That's how I read it anyway.

Nailed it. Psycho, your two handed decks are built with a lot of synergy, the knowledge and expectation that certain cards will be played on specific characters on the other side of the table. This is different from building a generic deck that's good at questing or healing or ...

Ohhhhhhh right ok I got it. My decks are specifically built together and work together but you are right many that are referred to or posted in this thread are not. Sorry for the confusion.

You actually make a really good point too. Not enough synergy is present in many decks designed for two player/two handed.

AMEN. Yes, more synergy please for it is enhances gameplay by (a) making it more possible to beat these most "beastly" of quests, (b) is a more elegant form of deck design and © just more fun to play IMHO and (d) is a good way to introduce/recruit others into this most demanding game.

I think this game was born for 2-player style and tossing attachements on the other deck and helping him in need is the most satysfying feeling for me. Although theme is extremly important to me also.

So I build coop thematick decks only. ;)

Feel free to try my Silvan and Dwarf decks.

(I try to maintain all my posted decks and update them if new expansion comes up.)

And coop Rohan decks are comming soon.

(And as always all suggestions to improve them are welcome.)

Mae Garnen (S. Well Done!) Olorin! I look foreward to trying both of these out. I'm especially grateful for the Dwarves decks that use cards from the post-dwarf sets--love the deck names btw!. Excited to see a Rohan coop deck as well or maybe even a Rohan-Gondor pairing.

One more thing: You might want to post these decks in separate threads so they are easy to find in searching and for further comment. Just a suggestion.

Again, thank you for your contributions to those of us who find it hard just finding time to play, much less to design and test decks!

Edited by Boronind

Thank you! I am glad that someone will give them a go and smash some Orcs to make Middle-Earth a better place to live ;) .

And the names? That was the hardest problem of all. I made those decks, tweaked and tried them out and then spent days to come up with propriate names. (I exaggerate of course ;) )

Well I am actually plannig for the next decks after Rohan Rohan-Gondor coop: allies leave play (Eomer, Imrahill, Horn, Valiant sacrifice,.....)

Posting them sepparatelly? good idea, thanks, I will do it next week.

Enjoy them and any feedback is much appreciated.

I have posted those Rohan decks. I would be glad, if you would give them a go.

Thanks to the outpouring in this sub-forum of 2 player/handed decks! You have renewed my desire to play on a more regular basis and teach others at my LGS.

Keep 'em coming!

I finally have some time to reply to your posts.

Thank you for your kind words and if these decks help to come back to this amazing game for even one player, they are worth the time spend building them.

More decks comming soon. (September after holiday)

Gondor and thematic Saga decks.
