I'd want to go soft on the hype myself. Nobody wants another PM disaster...
I like the title, it does suggest a metaphysical shift. This *is* based on a Lucas story treatment, right?
But these journalists are out to lunch: "The one thing we can all agree on is it beats the hell out of The Phantom Menace..."
No, we can't agree on that. The Phantom Menace is a good title, neatly encapsulating the entire premise of the fall of the Republic, while also providing a humorous pun for Anakin's unfathered conception...The Phantom P****... 
ESB was a good title, but the rest are boring, or stupid, AotC being the worst.

I guess Return of the Jedi was already taken.
I though AotC was appropriate given the serial nature of the series...
As an interesting aside, I think it's funny how the original film was supposed to play off the serials, but now the mouse wants a film a year until the money stops flowing, essentially running them as a feature length annual serial....

The thing is, if you look at the original source material - the old Republic serials - you'd get names like The Phantom Empire, Radar Men from the Moon, Jungle Menace, The Purple Monster Strikes, Flash Gordon Conquers the Universe, and Riders of Death Valley, all six of the Lucas Directed Star Wars names were exactly in-line with that vibe.

I disliked the name "Attack of the Clones" not because it didn't have that pulp feel - it did indeed! - but because it broke the pattern set by the other names in the Lucas-directed movies. A New Hope and The Phantom Menace are structured similarly; Article Adjective Noun. Same with Episodes III and VI - Return of the Jedi and Revenge of the Sith. But The Empire Strikes Back and Attack of the Clones?
I don't know. It just bugged me.
They should have just named it Blue Harvest.

I liked "Attack of the Clones" as a title. It's kitschy and campy. Doesn't take itself too seriously.

I actually think The Phantom Menace is one of the best titles in the series. 'Attack of the Clones'... well, if my son was on these boards, he could tell you how sick he is of me adopting a fat-Elvis posture and singing, "Attack o' them Clones..." 
I recall being an eight year-old in '79 and reading the title of Star Wars 2 in a magazine: "The Empire Strikes Back? Are you kidding?!?"... but I've since made my peace with it.
What I find a little incongruous is this:
- A New Hope - does not contain a SW-only word
- The Empire Strikes Back - arguably contains a SW-only word
- Return of the Jedi - contains a SW-only word
Now, the prequels:
- The Phantom Menace - does not contain a SW-only word
- Attack of the Clones - arguably contains a SW-only word
- Revenge of the Sith - contains a SW-only word
So, 'The Force Awakens' certainly throws that out! Not knowing anything about the film (and avoiding spoilers like the plague), I'm expecting the film to open with a close-up of a beeping alarm clock.

I thought the exact same thing. I think The Phantom Menace is a very good title, aptly describing exactly what was lingering behind the scenes of the movie. The quality of the movie may not be stellar, but the title gave me great hope when I first heard it.

Anyway, yes, the best thing one can say about TPM is that the title is accurate -- there is no clear villain, no clear reason for why anything is happening, and even the antagonists offered make no sense whatsoever in that stupid, incoherent mess of a movie.

As much as I love 'Cosmic Encounter' and pulp sci-fi... 'Star Wars' isn't it. A few elements are a shout-out to classic pulp, but even from the first film, it was something more, reaching for something deeper.
Loved the original movie titles. The film I saw as a girl in 1977 was called 'Star Wars'. Simple, elegant.
'Empire Strikes Back' and 'Return of the Jedi' were great titles, not silly or campy, and accurately summed up what the films were about, as well as suggesting a story arc of beginning, setback and eventual victory for the good guys. It actual feels like a proper trilogy, unlike today's 'trilogies' that are just a bunch of money-spinning sequels strung together for profit.
'A New Hope' and the prequels are total atrocities, in terms of title and content.
And if my game had a name, it would indeed be 'Revenge of the Jedi'
I like The Force Awakens... It is a no-frills, unpretentious, throwback-style name. Which seems to be what Abrams is going for overall.

Nothing lives up to its hype. Please let social media think it will be utter crap (so it will end up seeming suprisingly great).
