Will Warlords Rotate out?

By StupidPanic, in Warhammer 40,000: Conquest

Yeah,
While I can understand dropping all the regular cards from warlord packs!

Killing off Warlords seems excessive!
Especially when it turns out to be your favourite hero!
Or if the warlord works in a new deck you just built out of recent warpacks...

I wonder if the Warlords and their signature cards will be immune to this?

Does the core set also rotate out or just the warpacks?
I don't want to have to spend £70-90 every three years on a new triple set of core boxes!

I can't see FFG phasing out the cores as players who started mid rotation will only get 1-2 years use from the core sets... or less.

If the core set never rotates out, This would make the starter warlords immune to rotation?
It would be fair to assume that warpack warlords should also be safe!

Maybe once the first cycle rotates out, making the first 8 warpack warlords available as a print on demand product, will enable them to stay legal?

Rotation will not come till Fall 2018.

Core and deluxe sets do not rotate. Only cycles.

Yeah,

Off topic, but when ever Panic starts a post with "Yeah...", I always read it in Bill Lumbergh's voice.

And no, the Warlords from the Warlord cycle will not be immune. They will rotate out in about 4 years for Standard competitive tournament play.

You can still play them in casual games though!

I also imagine we'll see variations on common themes as the cycles continue. Like, right now Blackmane is a great option for killing the other Warlord. But I imagine we'll see other assassination options pop up well before he is phased out, so it'll be possibly to recreate a deck that feels very similar to an older one, but that freshens things up a bit with some variation.

Well, the core set and delux expansions will not be rotated. I would expect some of the ones rotated out will get a new version at some later point.

They can rotate like they want. It´s just a tournament rule, so I do not really care.

Yeah, if it opperates like AGOT ( which seems to where their overall approach to LCG began) there will be new versions of characters throughout the life of the game. And like you said, nothing stops you from playing them for fun.

In this respect it almost certainly won't work like A Game of Thrones - AGoT is a much smaller and more narratively fixed fictional space from which to draw characters; and the game mechanics by relying on houses (which are essentially families and their retainers) means the number of characters available is very small so they show up again and again with slightly different stats and abilities to reflect key moments in their plot lines. Star Wars also works like this.

Conquest is rooted in WH40K though which is a much larger fictional space with both many more existing characters and far more room for the developers to invent new ones. The closest comparison in LCGs is Warhammer Invasion which to the best of my knowledge never reused a character - and Warhammer Fantasy is a smaller setting than WH40K.

yeah,
I don't see why they will be 'required' to rotate out the warlords?

Maybe because that is how it is phrased in the article? :)

FFG isn't required to, but it is how they've chosen to do it, based on the article they released.

There's been nothing to suggest they won't just reprint certain cards to keep them in rotation.

As FFG are the rule makers, they can adjust things as they see fit. They could ammend rotation to keep warlords around, they could reprint warlords in new cycles, or not. It's a long way off, a lot can change by then.

It is also not impossible that Warlords/Identities that do rotate out would come back in an altered form representing the passage of time/progression rather than just a straight up reprint.

I would be surprised if there isnt some sort of "classic" style (a la M:tG) that is introduced once the rotation begins where older cards are kept legal...but as people noted, this will only really apply to tournaments (although i wonder if they will go permanently OOP at that point...)

It should be nice, and FFG could even advance the story of the sector using tournament results, which in result could serve as a way to involve players more in the game.

That might be a second, underlying reason for starting rotation. If it allows FFG to trim down the number of expansions it has to keep reprinting, then they can concievably reprint the other packs faster, providing for less inability to get the expansions that you need to play competitively.

Of course, that sucks for the guy 5 years from now who wants to play the original Blackmane in a casual game...

You guys are kidding me, right?!? How many of you ADD types will still be playing this game in 4 years? Will I? I dunno! The point is to be overly concerned with what may happen to a game that may exist 4 years from now is way too DOOM! mode.

It's a fun game that should be enjoyed today. Worry about what will happen in 4 years, 3 1/2 years from now...

yeah,

Based on the information we have so far, the entirety of Battle Pack cycles #1 and #2 rotate out for tournament play when cycle #8 is released. The warlords being released now are part of Cycle #1, so they will rotate out when Cycle #1 rotates out. That's not to say FFG will not make exceptions or change the rules 4 years down the line when this would actually happen, of course.

There's also a very real possibility that no one will be playing with the Cycle #1 warlords in 2018 anyway, preferring instead new warlords that are likely to be released in 2016 and 2017.

Cards in the core and deluxe sets will not rotate out and will always be considered part of the current rotation.

yeah,
It's a long way off so not worth loosing sleep over.

I just think that having,
Player A's favourite warlord (/deck) is from the core set and is immune to rotation
while Player B's favourite warlord is from a warpack and has a four year life span...

Is a bit sh*tty.

Same thing happening in Netrunner. One day (barring reprints) I won't be able to play Whizzard any more, which makes me sad.

But it also sees Andromeda leave the card pool, which will hopefully make for a much less homogenous experience at tournament level. I am of course wistfully assuming we don't just get another super-commonly-played ID at that level.

Also, the announcement was that the 'current' version of the Core set and deluxes would be legal - also they've stated no plans to do so as yet, this does leave them the ability to dedesign/rebalance the Core sets if necessary.

We could even get a Conquest 2nd Edition, with brand new Warlords.

We could even get a Conquest 2nd Edition, with brand new Warlords.

I doubt they would do this for any of their LCGs moving forward. The only reasons they are making a Game of Thrones 2nd are the ludicrous amount of cards that the first round of rotation would cout, combined with the old, outdated, and redundant mechanics and collosal dictionary of keywords, making the game a much more complicated experience. All the other LCGs that are going to get hit by rotation are relatively new and most of their cycles for the first 7 waves are going to be designed with rotation in mind, Netrunner being the only exception there (5th cycle is the first after rotation.) Star Wars will be starting their 4th, and Warhammer their 2nd, after the rotation anouncement. Game of Thrones is starting over, Invasion is dead done being supported, Cthulhu is now only doing deluxe expansions, and LotR is unaffected as it's co-operative.
