Miniature tips for DH?

By Ron B. Stard, in Dark Heresy

Ok, I know miniatures are not required for DH, and many people happily play the game without them. So that one's out of the way. happy.gif

However, many of us enjoy using minis with WFRP and DH, so I am curious to know what minis do you use in DH? Obviously 40k has loads of suitable ones, but the trouble with them is you always need to buy units, or that the individual minis are pretty darn expensive. And to be honest, there aren't that many GW figs suited for acolytes, citizens cultists etc. Imperial troops have a couple of boxes like the Witch Hunter and retinue, IG comissar's, and so on.

Necromunda minis would be pretty useful, but they're not so commonly available. Luckily I have a few stashed away. Then I see people have used various plastic GW minis to convert their own. WFB Empire Militia seems to be popular. WFB figs might have other usable types as well, I haven't checked them out too carefully these days.

Of non-GW figs I like Pig Iron militia and other troopers. They're pretty nice not-IG or maybe planetary defence forces. Then there are the rebels (cultists/hive gangers?) and the more high-techy troopers (stormtroopers?) An additional bonus is they come with separate heads, so you can always do a little headswapping. And PI figs aren't too expensive.

I also have my eye on some Infinity figs for certain assassin and fighter types, and both Copplestone Castings and Em4 minis have some great 'dark future' types in their selections.

What I really would like to see is something like Consortium telepaths: www.consortium-univers.com , too bad these are 35mm, and would tower over all my other minis.

So, what minis do you use in DH?

While my group doesn't use miniatures for roleplaying, I have in the past toyed with using them in lieu of a character portrait (indeed, one of my house rules, no matter the system, is that people get bonus xp for showing up in costume, or with props, or with a character portrait, or a detailed back-story that has had some effort put into it, or a converted and painted miniature). Some of the ones that worked well were from Heresy Miniatures , or one of its' Forum of Doom! affiliates- Hasslefree , Eolith (although those are pretty much all 36mm or larger), or Black Scorpion .

My group uses a lot of old Warzone/Mutant Chronicles minis since we have many of them. They have a very similar 40K feel and some of the minis have chainswords gran_risa.gif

It makes me happy

Reaper minis Chronoscape line has a variety of different figs that will work well and Privateer Press - Warmachine has some that are also easily converted or used strait out of the box.

I myself use Imperial Guard Primaris Psyker figure but we use all kinds of minis in the 3 DH games we are playing.

I've used Reaper and Alternative Armies. (The wife bought a few Reaper's, the host had piles of AA), One player used a GW techpriest.

I'll use whatever is to hand, including pennies with stickers.

I have bought a few Reaper minis to paint and use. Many could work in a pinch and are often much less expensive than Warhammer minis. Have looked at the Chronoscope ones as well but have a backlog of minis to paint so I haven't picked up any yet - that and am saving up to buy Creature's Anathema first.

The other issue I have with the WH minis is that the vast majority of them are in power armor. I have picked up a sniper that is pretty neat but the majority of the cool ones I wanted for my Moritat assassin are unfortunately are all femaly Soriatas or Witch Hunters.

For alternatives our GM picked up some Star Wars ones at a sale and they seem to be ok. There are also some board games that include figs are fairly decent.

I've mostly lucked out, as I've been collecting 40K minis since the original RT days, so have a navigator, tech priest etc in my collection. I also have small 'modern' armies of Witch Hunters and Demon Hunters, which have plenty that is useful for PCs in them. In addition to those there are a quite a few D&D pre-paint minis that can be had quite cheaply that are useful for xenos creatures and races. The human sized minis are a little small for use with real 40K minis though.

It's pretty easy to 40K up other minis too - if you've got something in scale that is along the lines of what you want (in robes if you want an adept etc) all you need are some bitz - a laspistol or bolt pistol - even an auspex (as used to be on marine spues) and there you go! Just a holstered pistol on a robed figure, and it is transformed from fantasy to the dark millenium.

I don't like painting. I'm bad at it and have no time.

I use em4 prepainted SF minis .

A *few* of the Star Wars minis are good for DH. The Star Wars battle map thingies are great, IMHO. I just never flip over the piece that has the TIE fighter on the other side.
